I remember when Y2k approached, I made emergency kits for each of my family members with enough provisions, clothes, food, and walkie-talkies/batteries to last 3 days. I had the emergency kits stored in my trunk of my car which I also equipped with CB radio (in case satelite cell phone communication went down) and made sure I always had a full tank of gas.
On Jan1, 2000 I remember everyone scrambling for gas at the gas station and was glad I had already kept mine full. I spent about $500 on Y2K preventative emergency measures just in case, and had worked out a plan of escape/survival with my family.
But....nothing happened.
My emergency kits are now useless because my daughter has outgrown the clothes I put in it, as have I (lol, gained weight) and am no longer married to her mother (whom the other kit was for). And the food is old. So, I should probably make a new set of kits just in case 2012 histeria causes an emergency just from people panicking alone.
The way I look at is, you never know WHEN the end will be, whether it is your personal end, or the world's. You should always be prepared, but not live your life in fear in the meantime. Just enjoy the time you have now whilst you have it, and make sure emergency measures are in place to protect the ones you love (and the things you want to pass on to them) when/if you go.
Like putting on a seatbelt: you don't put it on because you're planning on getting in a car wreck; you put it on just IN CASE you do. But for the most part, just enjoy the ride
