Is it...normal in Germany to have huge windows in the bathroom?

I wouldn’t say “normal”, but it is definitely common and not only in Germany, but in most European countries. It is a more recent “trend” to provide all rooms of windows: more and/or bigger windows to save on light (electricity). For the bathrooms, the windows have a (optional) layer that you cannot see inside from the outside.

Surely the real architectural issue is the lack of a wall between the bathroom and living area (though apparently this is a growing trend in hotels)

That's interesting, and makes sense as a power-saving technique. I guess klickies have no shame and opted to do without the privacy layer!

That is indeed more shocking. It's a trend in modern US apartments to have the kitchen be one wall of the main room - zero separation from the living space. Looks very weird to me.

There is a bathroom with huge windows and a lounge that looks directly onto the bathroom. There's even a change of clothes by the front door. This has only fans pad written all over it.

As for the bathroom, my house is down a long drive, the bathroom has floor to ceiling windows on two sides which are just regular glass. There are curtains. The previous owner told us she was having a bath one day when the courier arrived for a signed delivery. No one answered the door so he went around the back to see if anyone was home...She wondered who got the bigger shock given she was in her 80s.
