I imagine that the things on the edge of the steps are lights; maybe working ones?

Agh, hadn't thought of that. I REALLY hope not... but you are probably right.  I am SO sick of stupid blinky-winkies.. and worse, pointless senseless shooting.. THINGS.

What I can't figure out is the "wood" things that seem attached to the rocks next to these stairs...  ???

They are clipped on.  Some sort of hose system so you can have real water circulating?

Yes, those things.. but they look to be hard plastic to me... but maybe you're right.... they are near the water... all of them.

Can't see them in the zoo, but two of them appear on that other one, and one on the pic bml87 found...

Yeah those are light pedestals on the stairs. They are non-functional I am sure. They were used on the Children's Hospital I think. I know I have one pair of them and found them useful. Not sure about the wood thing, but probably something to do with the water features.

Not really. A few useful parts for creating some customs, yes. But as a whole, the soldier looks wrong and awful, imho.
It´s like they mixed parts from a footsoldier with an officer. And again he too comes with a wrong (19th century) rifle.
