New to trains...need help!
« on: June 17, 2014, 14:58:15 »
I feel like I have the dumbest questions lately....but I really must ask this. I recently purchased a huge collection and it includes an train set. It is either the old 4027/4028. My question is how do I make the train run? There was an old transformer included but I assume that's only to save batteries? I tried removing the case from underneath the red engine, but couldn't manage to pull it out. Are there batteries inside?

The transformer was very old and looked like a fire hazard so I quickly put it into the trash. Now how do I make my engine work? :-[

What you have there is an electric train, you need metal tracks and a transformer connected to them to power the train. There are no batteries involved, the motor in the train engine picks up it's power from the tracks through the wheels.

The Playmobil transformer/controller comes up fairly often on eBay in the UK, so I guess it does, too, in the USA.  You will need to buy one which matches your country's mains power.  You will also need some connecting wires to connect the transformer/controller to the track.  A good buy is an LGB one as it is more robust than the old Playmobil one.

You can also find LGB transformer/controllers on eBay, but it is best to avoid these as they have a higher maximum output than the Playmobil ones and so, if you aren't careful, can damage your loco's motor.

An electric train can be identified by the metal current pickups between the wheels. Just look at the picture of my steam locomotive. This is the same for the diesel locomotive, because it uses the same power unit.

These trains require metal rails and a transformer. I would not recommend a LGB transformer, because the output is a little higher than normal transformers (due to use in gardens).
You need a transformer with direct current (DC) output, with a maximum of 12 volts. In Europe this would be a Fleischmann, Roco, TRIX or Hornby (International) transformer. NEVER USE A MÄRKLIN TRANSFORMER FOR PLAYMOBIL, BECAUSE THIS IS AC !!!
Most new transformers has a manual, which explains how to connect the transformer to the rails.
