I used to collect LEGX as an adult and gave them up for playmobil
even though playmobil is designed clearly for kids (my first love were those old redcoats and the US cavalry

true too, that kids taste for toys has changed alot over the last 10 years or more but I wonder if these "less imaginative/creative" LEGX pieces lose out in playability

(the last picture is just to show what the flags looked like....boring, compared to the new playmobil Asian flags I suppose)

both LEGX and PM are designed with the same kids in mind, but maybe PM will prove to be the winner with kids? let's see ;)

Those are not too realistic for me, they're awesome! I've been thinking about some kimono designs for my samurais to wear under their armor, I will definitely try now!

The original Lego Ninja theme was great. It was actually considerably more based in history than these new Playmobil sets. And to me, that increased playability a ton, as I feel most historic sets do. Unfortunately, that theme hasn't been around for the last ten years or so. The recent Ninjago theme that goes along with a television show is what these seem to be more based on, with the exaggerated colours and wild-looking parts.

As you mentioned cheng, children's taste in toys has definitely changed, what with their playing annoying video games, never looking away from their cellular phones, and appearing to have much less grounding in the "global society" of the world. What I don't agree with is how the developers seem to accept this and continue to develop toys that someone - no doubt a "social expert" or "trend analyser" or some sort of high-paid fellow who reckons he knows what will sell and what the children will culturally accept and want to play with - designs and promotes. It's understandable how and why this happens, but it's still sad.

Playmobil doesn't seem that crazy to me yet though, but this theme is a bit disheartening. Hopefully they will release some some historic (or less flashy fantasy) sets soon. I guess this was sort of expected for the Asian theme, but I feel bad for those who are really interested in the historic aspects of Asian culture and wanted a theme more like the Roman, Egyptian, or Medieval Europe themes.

Pics from (most) novelties in the new German 2013 catalogue are now available in "another forum" (not the PCC).
Unfortunately it is not allowed to repost them here...
(even providing links to them or mentioning what they show is forbidden)

who is not allowing them to be reposted? Is it KW ?
If you hear the sound of the bell which will tell you that Grigori has been killed, if it was your relations who have wrought my death, then no one in the family will remain alive. They will be killed by the Russian people. :prays:

I have the feeling that older toys, like older cartoons, where designed much more in line with what the people creating them liked instead of conforming to kids all the time.
Through that kids might learn so much more about history though since it offers a more complete picture instead of only selling the stuff that kids would consider their favorite items.

Castles, soldiers and knights where popular in the 70s, 80s and 90s too, but as far as I know the other sets where good sellers as well. Back then I was very happy when I purchased the fleur de lis royal couple, even while that set only had two soldiers and mostly was about nobles and servants. One of my most favorite sets still.

These days playmobil seems to desperatly try and compete with cheap playsets of dubious toys for some reason, same with lego, instead of making the most of their own wonderfull systems that have the power of combining perfectly with all other sets. They need to keep capitalising on that.

Right on, Rhalius. Like you say, I don't think these sets would be able to combine with others. You could interact with the Dragonland theme well I suppose, but there's not much of a way to interact the other historic sets with these, unfortunately. :-\

This is obviously not a historic Asian series so I do not see why compare it or hold it up to the other historic themes. To me its all fantasy and should be compared as such. Dragon land, fairies, ghost pirates etc........If you compare it to Romans this theme looks ridiculous, but if you put it next to the ghost pirates it makes sense.

I just hope Geobra still makes a accurate historic Asian theme...soon.

....and that was only a few years ago....too bad they didnt decide to launch Asians back then, we could have bought some nice temples and proper junks, maybe a sedan chair and a dragon dance troop for our kids and played with them when our kids are no longer interested ;)

and thanks Pynedor for the bit of Lego history! I gave up Lego just before their cavalry came out, so not aware that there were 2 'seasons' of Japanese themes,
maybe I'll wait for another 'season' for historical Asians should they want to penetrate the Asian markets after the US, hopefully Asian kids would prefer something more historical...just dreaming again :P good to have hope ;)

Back in 2002 (ish) the first Lego ninja theme came out and I made a huge table in my room to display them.
It was a fantastic series.

Sure I wish that the upcoming Asian Dragon would be more realistic, but I still like it. I wish they'd made more ninja, but then the ressemblance to Ninjago would be too obvious, so the lonely red shadow will be even more special.

A new land and new characters for my growing playmoworld. Nothing wrong with that.
