Hey Playmofriends  With the new Series 2 specials coming out, with the designs getting odder and odder, I was just wondering how you feel about the deviation from the "classic" Playmobil look? Do you hate the strange faces or do you embrace the changes, as it allows for more creative customizing? Which looks are your favorite? Why?
Cheers!
Jenna

Moderators: Please feel free to move this poll! I always think this is section is about collecting and not directly about the official Collector's Club

I don't mind some of the changes. Good thing is you can always turn the head around for the classic smile. I wouldn't mind if they would come up with new designs and parts. I know there are several new hair pieces but there are a lot of torso and legs that have been rehashed. Overall I think its great PM has come up with these. On the contrary, regular specials maybe going away. Don't know for sure though.
-
i think the advent of the turning head is great and I would hope they add it to all their figures... as long as the classic face remains an option... I'm good
-
I don't have any of these, but I think it'd be cooler if they would stick with the classic smile, just with more additional features available like eyelashes, blushing, eye patches, facial hair, scars, face paint, and such. I mean... that pretty much covers mostly any additional features I guess. I think that all of these function well, considering any "bad" figures look bad enough with their outfits and eyebrows (but not the wretched painted-on faces of some Dragon Land people...). Some of the other faces on the series 2 figures seem weird, and the head turning thing seems annoying to me.

I chose the, No They are Terrible because I really don't like them.
The new faces seem... weird. Especially the skater. :-\
-
I voted no because I lean more that way. I am ok with the sad face on the jailer, because it still looks fairly classic, and can be useful in photo stories. But all the weird sneers and smirks... I HATE them! I am happy we can at least turn them around, though.
I'll move this to a different board, Jenna, no problem. :)

doesn't it look like a big mustache instaid of a mouth? :hmm:
-
Also going with no, since most that are not based on the usual one are DREADFUL. And the turning doesn't really help in plenty of cases - it's hard to find a hair that will cover the horrid thing completely in the back....
-
I voted yes! I may not like some faces like the scatter, but the different styles do offer more possibilities in customising and photostories! Playmobil is after all about creating your own world! And you need more face expressions to achieve it! The old plain smile is the best of course, don't get me wrong, but the nnew variety is much more sophisticated and interesting, apart from a few exeptions!
-
I voted no, its just not playmobil. I wouldnt want them to end up like lego.
the smile is what keeps the toy innocent and friendly. Its kind of a symbol of the toy, and tribute to Hans Beck's vision. He would not like these different faces either I imagine, considering something like it was never done in all those years.
-

No it doesn't.....
-
I don't like the new faces, the only other faces other than the classic "smile" I like are the "angry eyebrows" one and the new "sad" face, they're still very "Playmobil-ish".
As long as you can choose between "new" and "classic" face I don't care much.
I have series two of the Fi?ures complete, and I've turned all the "smirky-snarly" faces around, so there's no problem there. :)

So you can confirm all the odd ones are "doublefaced"?
-
Yes, they are-the "punk", "vampire lady", "skater", "convict"-they all are turnable. The only one whose head you can't turn around is the "tattoo-faced knight", but I've got plans for him, lol! :)
-
:)
But the knight's face isn't based on the normal face? (I mean, we have plenty of printings over the normal face.. and then there's that lame halfeyes with a line over, (usually badly) PRINTED, that I have NO idea what they're suppsed to be)

It's the normal "angry eyebrows" face, with a rather cool (for a klicky) tattoo added. With me these heads will most likely end up on somekind of "Pictish" warrior, lol! ;)
-
I think that the new faces are terrible, and that Playmobil should stick with the classic face. With the new faces, the klickies are beginning to look to Legoish and the traditional smile is one of the things that really makes Playmobil special for me. :brownhair:
-
The Knight has a normal face but with a cool eye tattoo around the left eye.

Like I said before : the "angry eyebrows" face with a tattoo. :)
-
I like the tattoo...
Wonder if it's the same as the guy from RoboGang.
Thanks for the pic...
-

Yeap! Same! He looks great!!
Thinking back at other face patterns, the maori tattoo pirate is awesome!!!
-
I vote no. I'm not interested in collecting any of these series. I like the normal Klicky faces, & the only other facial looks I need are closed, or crying eyes which I can customize myself without Playmobil doing it for me. The only thing good about the new series is the accessories that come with them IMO. :)9
-
I wanna collect them all, but they are all going to be turned around to normal faces. :)
And there's a few that won't stay as-is at all; I'm not into witches and vampires, but will take them apart for customs. The vampiress is getting turned into a saloon girl. ;)
-
great thread, Jenna - thanks for starting it
if they weren't creepy (like the ghost pirates or african klickies) i guess i'd be pretty ok with them but they're definately a NO NO for me, eww they're super ugly and creepy!
I wanna collect them all, but they are all going to be turned around to normal faces. :)
same here :yup:
-
I am torn on these. The skater looks like a big Lego. On the other hand, a vampire needs her fangs. HER paint additions seem more in line with eye patches, beard stubble or frowns.
By trying new features on single figures (with reversible faces!), Playmobil picked a safe venue to experiment, and trying new ideas has kept them going for a very long time. Granted, some ideas don't work very well and/or stray too far from open-ended, creative play scenarios(I'm looking at you, "top agents.") The rictus grinning figures probably won't appeal to kids, or collectors, as much, and will hopefully be short lived, but kudos to Playmobil for trying.

I hate that one so much. A lot of Dragon Land figures and other new ones like Falcon Knights have that...
Like I said before : the "angry eyebrows" face with a tattoo. :)
Oh, wow! That is really cool-looking (for him, as I don't like tattoos myself )! I never knew that he had a special face; thanks a lot for showing that, mate. And I was thinking along the lines of the Picts also... That head doesn't turn around, does it? I think it's fine like that, as I mentioned that additions to the classic face are fine.
-
I don't like them, too much like LEGO.
Doug you have some good points there, the problem is that these are blind bagged figures. So there wont be any individual sales numbers that could tell them if a particular one is more or less popular. Only the secondary prices on eBay etc will show that, and they really don't like the secondary market and probably wont follow it.
-
thats pretty much where the problem is then. They try new things here, but have no idea which of the ideas gets well received and which arent. Aside from simply the idea of having figures to collect.
-
I totally agree with this thought. If they don't know what is selling by popularity, how do they know if a certain figure is a dud or success? ???
-

I think I agree with Panos. At first I hated them, but they are growing on me. Variety is a good thing!
I do not mind about the sad or angry mouths in fact, or tatoos, or eyelashes and eyebrows and all that... I did hate when they changed the smile. Becasue THAT is the trademark of a clickie. And the new skater has a new smile. That's horrible. And the eyes. I hate the non classic eyes....Come on guys! do you like Cleopatra's eyes?? and those are not new... so appart form the skater which I think looks freaky and a bit scary actually  I like the possibilities these changes bring. But I'll tell you when I get my series 2 lot :toot:
-

Ah, I'm not alone. I'm not very fond of the unshaven face either - cause they've used and abused it...

I was gonna say that ;) So I'll just say I agree... Makes no sense.

Ah, of course. Good point. So, the rictus skater should have been tried out as a Special, perhaps.
Otherwise the only feedback Geobra would have is if series 2 undersell 1 and 3...
-
How? 8}
There are too many....
-
There are too many....
I don't think so. There are a lot more clean-shaven faces than unshaven ones.
-
Terrible and Ugly and just nor right these new faces. I dont know what on earth the design team at playmobil is thinking, i have a very very strong view about the original smiley, playmobil is wrong to drop its trademark which is the simple smiley klicky. :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
As long as the normal smile and eyes are preserved, I am fine with facial features such as eyebrows, tattoos, facial hair, make up and such. Different eyes are fine too, like for asian clickies or ghosts. Upside down mouth is alright too, although I still dont like seeing a clicky being sad considering the amount of joy clickies usually bring.
It did start with lego like this too.. first they modified the original face with beards, eyebrows, eyepatches and such, with only women having a different mouth to indicate they where women. Later the faces got weird, took them less than 10 years to go from standard faces only to weird faces though.
Playmobil will hopefully not make the same mistake, they have been so good with it so far, no reason to abandon the friendly faces now. Especially since its not needed, playmobil faces allow for a lot more than lego, with earrings, attached beards and hair not being worn like a hat.

i've noticed that, and i was very curious about it - does that mean that no current lego fig comes with their classic smile? :(o):
not that i love lego, but i can't image the fans' reaction...
-
I don't think any lego figure still has the classic smile. A smirk at best I think.
The classic faces are available quite cheap on bricklink though, I got some myself to replace faded away faces. thats also a problem with lego, playmobil only has it with the oldest faces.
-

That's one of the reasons I wasn't attracted to Lego in the first place. I think that the faces look horrid.
-
Last night I noticed that the trademark smile has changed, just a little, over the years. If you look at an older klicky (the ones where the hands don't turn), and you will notice that the smile is a little bit deeper (taller) than the new ones. Personally, I don't really like the odd faces, like the one on the rocker with the orange, pointy hair, but I do like some new features, like the frown, the tattoo-face guy, and the vampiress. The really weird faces do look too much like Lego, and I hope PM doesn't intend to copy them more and more in the future. However, I don't really care if I can change the face, so long as the trademark face is still available and more prominent in the PM line. I would hope that even though PM might not be able to tell which figures are selling the best, I would think that they have some kind of focus groups, that includes adult collectors, to help direct their designs in the future. Just my two cents

In a few years we'll have that problem again.. The black queen was probably one of the first faces with those idiotic painted on eyes and-whatever-is-it-supposed-to-be over them.

Just to make sure we are talking about the same ones, do you mean the kind like those in sets 4812 and 4841? Those are the ones I can't stand.
-

Yep. WHATEVER it's supposed to be. And they're LAME, being painted.
-
Indeed.
-
it really does not matter as you can change them easy enough. If they sell and get playmobil brand more market exposure then it was all worth it. If they do not, well they have plenty of the old ones
-
Maybe if the new mouths are done in a playmobil way instead of a lego style print we would like them better right. Maybe THAT is the problem! It's like I said about the eyes,,, a print mouth and brown circular eyes are ok... but messing twith the eyes is just... :0 ...the skater's face freaks me out!!
Something that haven't been discussed yet is the importance for kids to relate themselves with their feelings. A hard thing to do with a forever smiling toy (PM, Lego, BArbie, whatever)
So this could be an adventage at some point.
Lots of therapysts use toys role play for kids therapy and even we talked about this here, a member doing it with clickies and all. So the importance of the possibility of having different facial expressions perhaps goes beyond the photostories WE COLLECTORS plan.
Imagine a kid who had been abused.... how can she/he relate to a smily clicky when role-playing his/hers feelings? Having sad, frowning, angry faces and more, opens up a world of possibilities in that field too.
-
Yes, I agree with that Gaston. That's why the sad face convict has grown on me. But he is cute because it's a classic face just with the mouth upside down. I would like seeing other facial expressions, but very basic ones with the classic simplicity. No smirks.
-
I think that a reason why the classic style smile (or its very similar derivatives) is the best is because it is so subtle. Sometimes it is even covered with a beard or a helm or something. It can be used in so many ways that it does not seem strange that the figure is "always smiling", as the smile is so small as to be almost thought of as a face of indifference. The "smirk" is just weird, because no one would remain in that facial expression for long, especially in some scenarios you could imagine during play. That's really what gets me about its weirdness...
-

And that's the truth.

Ditto. :)

I think the friendly smiles invite kids more to sit down and come play with the clickies than a smirk would.
It also seems more inviting in stores for relatives to buy it for kids in the family, just friendly clickies going about their daily business on the box, and the armed clickies dont look to take themselves too seriously either.
-
...and the armed clickies dont look to take themselves too seriously either.
That is true.

I don't mind some variety in a few sets, but my fear is that these new faces will eventually completely overtake the old. As a child, I liked the classic Lego faces, but it seemed as if they completely disappeared within a few years. Playmobil has been better in this regard, but the classic face is getting utilized less and less as time goes by. I liked when the stubble faces and the mean eyebrow faces were introduced, as they are useful for pirates and such, but now they're in practically every historical set while the classic face is becoming rather scarce. I have dozens of these heads in bags, but am in short supply of the classic ones. This classic face is Playmobil's trademark, and I hate to see them abandon it, but I fear that is what will soon happen. :'(
