zoo fencing
« on: November 26, 2010, 18:04:25 »
Ok, so this is what else I did yesterday.

I'm working on painting all the fencing for my zoo. I have never understood why playmobil picked that horrible yellow for all the zoo fencing, but it had to go!

I also painted these:

They are from this set: http://playmodb.org/setpics/7835.jpg but I use them as part of my big cat exhibits as viewing windows for up-close encounters.

And then I painted these:

This is the fencing from this set http://playmodb.org/setpics/4344.jpg which I use as a petting zoo.

As you can see from the box in the background, I have a lot of painting left to do! unfortunately, it is cold, windy, and rainy today, so it will have to wait.

Now, I need advice on this. I'm going to be combining several of these cages http://playmodb.org/setpics/7437.jpg to make bird exhibits, and of course, the yellow has to go. But i'm not sure what color it should be Thoughts?

Those fences look really great in black

At farms and zoos here, I have seen them spray wooden fences in some black creosote stuff through a compressor.

Great use of the roof sections :)9

Nice!!

Well regarding the color, I would go with white cages and red roofs if there will be tropical birds.  ;D
Other option.... dark green cages, terracota roofs.  ;D

That's...a good idea. i wouldn't have thought of that. I'm going to have a very large enclosure (i have awesome plans for it) with bald eagles, and some smaller ones for owls and falcons. For tropical birds, I'm going to have a walk-through aviary using two of these: http://playmodb.org/setpics/4281.jpg or maybe a greenhouse. i haven't decided which.

Dark green sounds good to me.

A few years ago in one of the convention displays there was an aviary made by using the structural frame from the 3079 space station and screen netting. Netting over poles is what some zoos use for larger bird enclosures that don't need to be heated.

Yeah, I've thought about netting, too. My current plan is a little hard to explain, but it imitates raptor canyon from the fort worth zoo, where there is kind of a tunnel through the cage so the birds can fly over you as you walk through, but you are not actually in the cage with them. It will be rather tall compared to most exhibits, so I think it will add interest to the diorama.

Thank you! I am always going to other zoos when I travel because I enjoy photographing the animals, and to get ideas for my zoo. I have been to 8 different ones so far, 7 of them more than once, (the other I will never go back to ) and i hope to see many more!
