Yes the plot was far fetched I agree...But again, although Balian was a real historic figure certainly not like he is presented, how can you make a story interesting for the viewers to see on the big screen?

Use Richard the Lion heart instead! ;D
He was a noble and courageous character, almost like a movie star.
And you don't even need to tweak him. 0)

There is a, could I characterise it as funny, scene at the end of the movie...why Does Richard the Lionheart always appears for a few seconds at the end of such movies?

Maybe Richard Lionheart asked too much to appear longer in the movie?  ;D
The real Balian wasn't some vague offspring to a vague knight. He already lived in the middle east and was king of Tripoli (Lybia), therefore he was a knight and knew how to wield a sword. He was also much older than Orlando Bloom is supposed to be in the movie, around 40 which made him an old knight.
Salahadin does appear magnanimous in the movie, but, the true story is that when he won Jerusalem back, the knights were freed in after paying a ransom, a widely spread habit by that time. . I guess they could afford it.
