My Egyptian Army
« on: November 15, 2009, 03:29:58 »
It seems that my posts on Garden Wargaming are not getting posted, so I will post here.

My Egyptian army has grown with 11 sets of Soldiers and 3 chariot sets.  I have changed my organization to 25 man foot units, this will be better at going up against my 24 man Roman cohorts.  My chariots will remain at units of 10, and my cavalry may increase to more than 10.

I am already starting to customising my troops.  Just by changing helmits, head rings and sorting out by chest ornaments and weapons.

There are quite a few different body armours for the Egyptians, it should give you plenty of opportunity to create bigger units. Good luck with your project

How many foot units are you shooting for? With chariots in units of 10 this should be quite the army! Please keep us posted on developments, and thank you for posting here.

How much space do you have to lay out your armies Don?

I built a Roman army of about 250 Legionnaries plus Auxiliaries (including archers and cavalry) plus officers, but never had the space to do much with them. Pit that against a similar-sized Egyptian army and I'd be struggling even more.

However my wife and I are moving to Eugene (home of Tiermann) soon, and when we have our own house I'll have a dedicated Playmobil room again, and then I'll have to see how much table space I can fit, unless I keep everything on the floor, but I think that's be a little cumbersome.

Currently I'm aiming for a smaller Egyptian army, maybe 100 foor soldiers in five units of twenty and five chariots, but it'll probably grow beyond that, as these things tend to.

Honestly, I don't have the room for these, I have to store them and can play with just a few.  I am hoping that when the economy turns around I can afford a bigger house and then I will make the room to set them out.  But in the meantime I want to collect Playmobil Egyptians and Romans before they are discontinued.

I am not sure how many foot units I will wind up with.  I will collect these as long as PM has them.  I am building a Roman Legion with 10 -24 klicky Chohorts plus supporting troops.  I want to build a force in Egyptians to meet them.

Ten chariots will be all I will collect for a while.  I now have 3.  As for my cavalry, as I get the sets #4245 with 1 horse these will be used to make up my cavalry numbers.

I want to get some sets #7383 Pharaohs Soldiers to mix in with sets #4245.

My funds for army building will slow down until after Christmas and New Year's.

Don, your planned Roman and Egyptian armies sound HUGE!

I know what you mean about space, Martin and all.  Although I'm lucky enough to have a dedicated Playmobil room, being a spare bedroom, it's not huge.  I can only fit three 6'x3' folding tables together in it while still having room to walk around them all.  Although this is a decent amount of space, I'd really like to double it, as my Roman fortress with nothing else takes up all the space!  I haven't yet set up my armies here, but I'm hoping it's enough space in which to have my Romans face off against my Egyptians.  If I could do it over again, I would reduce the number of "centuries" in my Roman army, but now that I have them all, I can't bear to part with any.  I didn't go quite so wild with my Egyptian army, but I still wanted a respectable force with which to face my Romans.

My Roman Army consists of one legionary "cohort", one Praetorian "cohort", and one mixed auxiliary "cohort":

6 legionary "centuries" each consisting of 20 soldiers, 1 centurion, 1 signifier, and 1 cornicen
1 legionary artillery "century" (to man 6 scorpions and 1 onager) consisting of 20 soldiers and 1 centurion
6 Praetorian "centuries" each consisting of 20 soldiers, 1 centurion, 1 signifier, and 1 cornicen
1 Praetorian artillery "century" (to man 6 scorpions and 1 onager) consisting of 20 soldiers and 1 centurion
2 Praetorian cavalry "turmae" each consisting of 10 soldiers and 1 decurion
2 auxiliary infantry "centuries" consisting of 20 soldiers, 1 centurion, 1 signifier, and 1 cornicen
2 auxiliary archer "centuries" consisting of 20 soldiers, 1 centurion, 1 signifier, and 1 cornicen
2 auxiliary cavalry "turmae" each consisting of 10 soldiers and 1 decurion
1 marine "century" consisting of 20 soldiers and 1 centurion
miscellaneous staff officers and cohort vexillifers and cornicens

My Egyptian Army consists of:

1 heavy infantry "company" consisting of 40 soldiers, 1 officer, 1 standard bearer, and 1 trumpeter
1 light infantry "company" consisting of 40 soldiers, 1 officer, 1 standard bearer, and 1 trumpeter
1 archer "company" consisting of 40 soldiers, 1 officer, 1 standard bearer, and 1 trumpeter
2 heavy cavalry "companies" consisting of 20 soldiers, 1 officer, 1 standard bearer, and 1 trumpeter
1 bodyguard "company" consisting of 20 soldiers
3 chariots for the Egyptian royal family (I may turn this into a chariot "company" consisting of 5 chariots, but I doubt it)
miscellaneous standard bearers and trumpeters

As one can see, the Romans outnumber the Egyptians two to one, but the Romans don't have to all fight at once and I have 220+ North African and Arabian troops of various types that can serve as Egyptian allies to even it out.

Hello Emperors

How about some pictures of all these huge armies. As spectacular as they sound nothing beats seeing it all set up even on the floor if you have to , please   :yippee:
