Playmobil Track Adapters
« on: February 16, 2008, 00:51:57 »
I just purchased an item that I didn't previously know about. Apparantly Playmobil made a track adapter to connect the RC tracks to the LGB electric tracks. The Ebay seller that I bought them from called them an isolator, but I think they're intended to be an adapter. They came in an add-on bag, article no. 7562. I took some pics if anyone is interested.

Note: the pics show the adapter with Aristocraft 1 gauge track.
What's the point of going, if you can't get there on a train?

Did you get the electric track connector from that set as well?

I'm still trying to figure out what the purpose of that was as it would seem to me that if you had LGB tracks, you probably already had an electric train, and therefore a track adapter.

Hello, KT ...

Apparently, Playmobil thought that everyone who already had a Playmobil electric train was going to be very excited about the new Playmobil RC trains. So excited, that they would want to put away their old electric trains and use their brass track for the new RC trains.

Hmmm ...  8}

I think you have the right idea Richard.

One other detail about this kit: The instructions that come with the kit show an isolated circle connected to an R/C line so you could, theoretically, have an isolated electric section running with R/C trains at the same time.

I guess it opens up some opportunities if you have a bunch of unused LGB track laying around that you want to combine with your R/C track...

I bought them not knowing exactly what they were until I opened the package and saw the instruction sheet. Who knows, they may come in handy somewhere, someday.

Hello, Steve ...

Who knows, they may come in handy somewhere, someday.

What would have really come in handy would have been an adapter kit to combine Steck and System-X! ... :)

All the best,
Richard

I'm still confused  :eh?:

If your moving away from electric trains, what's the purpose of the electric connector?

The other thing wierd about it, the connector for the transformer only works with the old transformers, not the newer ones they shipped with the 1995 and beyond trains which had screw on terminals.  Did they just have a bunch of these laying around and said, "oh no, no more electric trains, let's put these into the 7562 package, that'll really confuse them.  :)"

Honestly, I'm not sure why they put the electric lock-on in there. I still think the kit was designed to integrate electric and R/C trains on the same layout. The lock-on could be used to create isolated sections of electrified track on an otherwise R/C layout.

I'm confused on one point Knight Train. I always thought the screw terminals were older than the plug in lock-on shown in this kit. Now I'm trying to figure out which is correct. According to the Collectors Guide (2nd edition) the screw terminal power supplies were made from 1980-1991, then the plug in type were made from 1991-1997. Do you have a power supply with the screw terminals that is dated later than 1991?

I've been using the Collector's Guide as a reference for dates and I'm hoping that it's correct!

The collectors guide should be correct, I just noticed that trains I bought new (on closeout) when the RC trains where released had the screw-in terminal transformers.  In fact, all but one of my 10 electric train sets (many from garage sales and ebay) have the screw-in terminals, which led me (erronously?) to beleive the plug in adapters were the older ones.

Hi Knight Train, it's funny becuase all but one of the sets I've picked up have the plug-in type! I'm not too thrilled with the plug-in type because it's unuseable with other power supplies. I've cut a few off and added my own paddles or LGB press connectors instead.

I've kept a few in pristine condition just because I'm a goofy collector and can't bring myself to "ruin" them. I have a real obsession with the Playmobil train stuff. I guess that's why I picked up the track adapters too...

Thanks for the pictures Andi! I've never seen the bigger style adapter before. It's really weird looking. It looks like it has an LGB track clip built in. I'll have to keep my eyes out for that one.
