Kindergarten set 3131

Back in 1985, PM issued a number of bumper sets containing multiple klickies and accessories. Known as ‘Kindergarten sets’, they were probably aimed at places where several children would play with the toys at the same time. I heard of a Sunday School which had one of these sets.

Seven Kindergarten sets feature in PlaymoDB, all of them with scant details and only poor pictures taken from Catalogues. They are numbered consecutively from 3124 to 3132 (missing out 3129 and 3130). All these set numbers were also used for other sets, mostly later than 1985..
Seven sets shown on PlaymoDB.

Set 3048 from 1993 is described as a Kindergarten set by Playdalai on AmClicks in a list of sets not included in the 3rd edition of Collector; it is also not mentioned in PlaymoDB and I have no information about its contents.

When I saw these pictures on eBay, I was excited to see it contained the box and cover picture from set 3131, so I bid and won it. When I sorted it out, I found that most of the original parts in set 3131, (based on the set picture) were present. The box needed repair and there were a few mould marks on the picture, but I did some restoration work.

As to the contents, here is what was in the lot, set out as in the three pictures;

The second and third pictures had the most missing items. Luckily I have a lot of spare parts from this era of Playmobil, so I was able to complete the set,

Here’s what was missing;

And here are the three complete groups;

It all fits neatly into the box:

Finally, here is a composite scan of the box picture (it measures 38x 38 cm, too big to scan in one go using my A4 scanner.

At that moment the ship suddenly stopped rocking and swaying, the engine pitch settled down to a gentle hum. 'Hey Ford.' said Zaphod, 'that sounds good. Have you worked out the controls on this boat?' 'No,' said Ford, 'I just stopped fiddling with them.' (With thanks to Douglas Adams)

I always thought the articulated babies were much more recent - I only ever had the 'solid' ones when I was a kid, and didn't think they introduced the ones with legs until the 2000s.

You may well be correct, Oliver. The baby in the box picture is standing and the legs aren't visible. I was also unclear exactly what colour it was, so I included the nearest match I have.
 Mind you, I don't ever recall seeing a non-articulated baby, I will have to check my crèche (aka spare babies box).

Good point - the original baby must be the same as that set (3592) - all white, no articulation.

This is basically a few sets packed together...

Good point, that makes it pretty certain 3131 contained a white inarticulate baby.
I do have a few non-articulated babies in the créche, including some all white ones. I had forgotten all about them!
