4039 Heavy Duty Excavator
« on: July 07, 2014, 18:43:01 »
Hello PF's

I promised, and subsequently was kindly asked to make a review for the 4039 Heavy Duty Excavator, well here goes.
Here are two pictures with the contents still in the box.

Front

Back

As you can see on the picture at the back of the box. It does not contain a lot of extras, it's just the excavator and the operator klicky...but with helmet  :)...

Here's how the contents were packed inside the box. If you like to unpack a lot, which i do, there is a slight disappointment. As i said, and as shown on the back, the box just contains the excavator and the klicky.

After I unpacked the bag and assembled the excavator, this is how it looks like.. oh yeah and for I forget, if you like to apply stickers..there are quite a lot stickers. Basically every logo, text, number, picture is a sticker.

The cabin rotates 360° and can be fixed with a little lock. The same type of lock can be seen besides the scoop. The little red thingy, which comes in hand to lock the scoop, because a big disadvantage is that the scoop dangles  :( . To use the arm of the excavator you have to use your own arm, I mean that if you compare it with the excavator 3001, this one has the handle in front of the cabin and by moving it you operate the whole arm. Here it is only the scoop.

Furthermore the 3001 had a lot of more extras: there was an extra klicky, a broom, tools, traffic cones. Is there something I do like? Yes, it has a very big scoop...exactly the one you need for heavy duty quarry digging, the 3001 has a small scoop. I also like the klicky with his maxx7 overall.

For a nice comparison with other playmo excavators check noodwachters comparison thread

Excavator Comparison by Noodwachter72

And here's another two pictures one with "Bob the Builder in his excavator" and one with the excavator in action filling up the big dumptruck with gravel.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

Great review. It looks like a great set. I stupidly decided to wait when this set was available in stores and from geobra thinking it would be around for a while. Then I figured many would make it to the used market as well. No such luck. It was quickly discontinued, the prices stayed high, and supplies dried up fast. Just search auctions or classified adds and "be surprised"   ::)

It looks like you now have the whole series. Green with envy, I am
If you hear the sound of the bell which will tell you that Grigori has been killed, if it was your relations who have wrought my death, then no one in the family will remain alive. They will be killed by the Russian people. :prays:

Nice looking set. I don't have an excavator and would probably go for one of the smaller scoop ones. Construction is one of my less developed collecting areas. (so far)

Nice review I think your points are fair that the digger doesn't come with a lot of extras which is a pity, that old digger looks like a good set but, I've gotta admit the new digger does look pretty impressive particularly with that big dump truck as well and I like that Klickiy as well with his burgandy tshirt and wellies  :)

Thanks for the review, conniefrere. It looks like a nice set to go with other construction vehicles, etc. the lack of accessories would not be a problem for me - how many toolboxes and grey wrenches can one use?

Assembling it looks satisfying (as the pieces click together with pleasing 'snaps') and tedious (all those stickers/decals); PM assembly is an activity I often engage in on a Christmas morning (I am fussy about getting stickers straight, as other people have said here on PF).

At that moment the ship suddenly stopped rocking and swaying, the engine pitch settled down to a gentle hum. 'Hey Ford.' said Zaphod, 'that sounds good. Have you worked out the controls on this boat?' 'No,' said Ford, 'I just stopped fiddling with them.' (With thanks to Douglas Adams)

You're welcome, and indeed how many grey wrenches ome need. On the other hand some new tools would be nice for a change. Some big wrenches for these big vehicles or some "modern" explosives for blowing up stone walls... :)
