Now that new interest in EQUUS (by Peter Shaffer) is being sparked by Daniel Radcliffe’s performance in this play, I thought I’d try my hand at doing a short, Playmobil adaptation.  The result: CABALLUS.

I need to learn how to do these. Can they be done with a digital VC? Like a sony Handycam?

I use a Canon ZR70 MC (miniDV).  You can definitely use a Sony Handicam!  Do you have a video editing program?  I used to use Adobe Premiere, but now I use Sonic Foundry Vegas, a great, intuitive, and very user-friendly editing program.

Yes I have the video editting prog that comes with it and I also use the Windows one with XPHE. But I have been looking for something more hmm... "useable"?

I find that the windows one and the sony one don't provide some of the options I would like to have - like inserting text and graphics w/o having to make them in Photoshop first as still images. And easier sound track fading and blending.

Maybe I will try the ones you mention.

Beyond that, what is the process? record, pause, move, record, pause, move ... repeat for a day and half until your done? lol It seems to me it would be an awfully long process to make a short film. But I am interested to at least try it once.

Your stuff is really good. My one year old loves the Shakira video. And I really like your rapper and DJ customs.

Vegas is definitely what you're looking for: it allows you to insert text very easily as well as graphics and background.  Track fading/blending is a simple drag and drop.  It's not only easy to use, it's also quite fun to experiment with the wide variety of plug-ins it includes (e.g. black-and-white, swirling effects, cookie cutter effects, green screen effects, etc.). 

I record one second of footage, then I move the clicky.  Then another second, then I move the clicky again.  Then I upload this footage to the editing program and speed up each individual second of footage to get the animation fairly smooth.  The smoother you want it, the more footage you'll need.  In other words, you can have a clicky move his arm in two movements or four, depending on how complex you want it.  It does take a while -Caballus took me a month for four minutes of footage- but it's a lot of fun.

Hey thanks, I'll check out vegas. Maybe I'll try a quick little experimental movie with what I have and see how it all works. I'm really impatient though, so this could turn out to not be my kind of project lolol.

I think my favourites are your music videos. And your customs really look the part.
