Your opinion about this 2-8-0 train
« on: February 07, 2013, 12:38:02 »
I did try to draw a train that I would like to be realized by Geobra. Of course it's just the main lines. I would like to have your opinion (color, shape etc...)...I have to draw the tender, the wagons ....

I think it looks great. My main concern is about the 4 large driver wheels - will they be able to go around the tight corners of the curves made with Playmo or old LGB track?

what a great design and drawing. I think the traditional black would look good. I know how much playmobil likes to make things have toy type colors so maybe some gold for the clip on parts or silver would look good to accentuate the details

I think, it's difficult to build, that you can go also with Radius 1.
Till now, there were only locos with smaller wheels.

This year Piko will build the first loco (BR 64) in gauge G with this big axles (58/64 mm diameter, like the St. Mary), but 3 big axles (not 4!) with motor on all 3 [look HERE!].
(The motor of the Steaming Mary is in the tender, not on this big wheels)

wow to the 2-6-2 engine, If only I was willing to buy non playmobil that would be on my list for sure. It almost looks playmobil-ish

Didn't the Steaming Mary have the engine in the tender due to playmobil using only one type of LGB motor block. That motor block would not be able to fit in the engine due to the large wheels. Playmobil molds the engine and the tender case but LGB provided the actually motor block. Playmobil should still have all the molds for all the engines.

Also who made playmobils metal wheels ?

Is that right?

I don't know, who made the metal wheels and the motor blocks.
The wheels could be of LGB, cause they produce nearly the same small wheels, which are in the 4052-loco (or they have the same producer).
I'm positive, that LGB made the track.

The Piko BR 64 looks a bit playmobilish, cause it's a »prototype« (3D print) without fine pieces on it. The finer pieces will come later...

Playmo 80, now there is an idea, 3D print your 2-8-0 design. How great would that be to print your own train. Then just add the metal wheels etc......

I'm certain Playmobil made their own electric motors and LGB only provided the rails.

The loco design is very well done, but I think it needs an extra pair of wheels under the cab so it is a 2-8-2.

However, zugpferdchen has a very good point about how well the loco would cope with the R1 curves Playmobil have always used.  To go to a larger radius curve, R2 or R3, would make layouts bigger and more expensive, and both would limit the market for the new loco.  An R1 circle has a diameter of just under 4 feet and an R2 circle just over 5 feet.  An R3 circle is bigger still.

thanks for your comments...I think it's possible to realized it for a R1 curve, but the wheel diameter should be 38-40mm (not bigger)

I think, it's difficult to build, that you can go also with Radius 1.
Till now, there were only locos with smaller wheels.

. I did draw a top view of the train on the track (see below).
The train characterized are:
- length:300mm
- 8-wheels diameter: 38mm
- front wheels diameter:15mm
- 8-wheels axis distance: 45mm
- front wheels ditance to first 8-wheels: 69mm
- front wheels axis position: 36mm

As you say Rasputin, I will make a 3D-modell
