pirate ship string
« on: September 23, 2006, 01:12:50 »
::) after reading another thread about ropes with tatty ends, i realized i had a doubt about the right string to use on a boat...
:) i am in the process of restauring a 3550 ship.
this week i am receiving the last plastic parts i need to acomplish this, but all the white string i have is from other, more modern sets - 3750, 3055, 3940.
??? does anyone know if the 3550 set uses the same string?
 :) thank you.

No, I don't think that these strings are the same, or at least let me say, that the modern ones are most times synthetic ones. The old one used some kind of cord, at least at my 3550 which is completely original from the late 70s.

You have a dilemma - the current Playmobl string isn't as the original on your ships but you may be able to get string the same as the original from a shop selling parts for model boat builders, but that string wouldn't be the Playmobil string.

Maybe you have to compromise here and not go for exact restoration.

i knew it. i am doomed.
just now that the last pieces i was missing are about to arrive.
there is no solution for this as playmofire rightly says.
this 3550 set is the only one i have that i haven't bought "new in an unopened box".
i like to have all my pirate sets exactly as they were made, with all their original parts.
i store the boxes, instructions, leaflets and plastic frames, and then assemble the set.
it would be important for me to have the correct string for the 3550.
maybe i will wait for a "nib" set to appear for less than 200 euros and then sell mine - complete with non-original strings.
thanks again, little jo and playmofire, for the data.

i just found this group of spares for sale on ebay.
the flags look like the ones used on the 3550 ship and - mostly important - there seems to be a blue round container of string included.
 8}
can anyone of you confirm that this is the original string?
if this is the case, my 3550 could finally get out of the yard (it has been lyin there for more than 1 year).

It looks like the real string.
I have that same 'container' in black.
Do you need more parts for old pirateships?

someone has been busy polishing parts. 8-)

thanks arab warrior.
besides the string i think i am only missing some black knives/daggers.i am also having som difficulties attaching the top front mast to the white nest below. maybe this is because they come from different 3550 versions.
i have a lot of duplicated parts and i was thinking on showing them here and offer them to someone who needs them.
thanks again for the help.
