Just in case following pics have never been posted on the forum...
(Only) 3 pictures "publicly" available (that I'm aware off) from a few prototypes of never released items/sets... the Mississippi-steamboat probably the most famous one.
These prototypes are kept in glass cabinets at Playmobil-headquarters (in Zirndorf I guess).
I hope there won't be negative comments/troubles again about credits/copyrights/etc. of the pics, as they originate from an old thread on the Klickywelt-forum...
Here's the steamboat... sadly not a full view, but nevertheless it gives a reasonable impression what the boat looks like.
-
Here's a medieval round(!) knight's tent, and... medieval torture-equipment :o
-
And to conclude, some Arabian klickies and Mongol(?) horsemen...
The flying carpet made it to production, but the prints on it are different I believe...
Also, look at the strange roof of the steakhouse steckhouse below in the left-corner ;)
-
Excellent !!! i have never seen these befor ein my life ! thanks so much for sharing Hadoque, the strange steck roof looks like a bigger version of the steck tiled roof used in the steck water well..
I would love to have this round tent and torture equipment and the steamboat !!!
-
Oh WOW!!! thank you for these great pics Erwin!!! I always thought there may be prototypes locked in the vaults of playmobil... The steamboat is sooo great!!! I wonder if there is anything else in their vaults!!!

Perhaps we can ask Playmobil to ' borrow' it for our western diorama at Playmobil Greece , hhhhmmm

I guess in that case the Playmobil Hellas officials will be like (http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Confused/3d-funny-eyes.gif)
-
Thanks, Erwin, I've never seen these before.
I guess the different Steck roof was for a simpler (maybe, too, smaller) building.
-
OMG!!! this is amazing!!! thank you Hadoque!!!
The steamboat and the lower steck house roof are the best!!!!!!
Now, does anybody know why these SO AWESOME sets did not make it to production???? they would sell like butter!!!! :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

The steamboat waqs mentioned in the Playmobil book ' Playmobil : Story Of a Smile' , it didnt make it into production due to high cost... shame really i would buy 10 of them and creat a confederate river fleet !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
-
I have never seen these pics before, only heard the legends! Thanks for showing the oics, hadoque!
Gaston, the steamboat is actually talked about in the collector book, at the beginning. Basically, it was just too expensive to be practical I think. But now that I actually see it... :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: It's so gorgeous! It would be great for setting up a New Orleans scene. Maybe someday.... :cloud9:
As for the medeival torture instruments, I can see why they changed their minds!
-
oh I see.
I don't have any book yet.... or do I bb?
-
Yep, your..... I'll Pm you.
-
As for the medeival torture instruments, I can see why they changed their minds!
and what a great shame this is !! at least if they were ou ton the market for a short period of time , i would love to get me hands on a few of those they look very mediaval !!!!!!!!!!!!!! same story with the special klicky the red hooded executioner, a truly cult klikcy ...
-
Thank you for showing us these rare photos, Hadoque! I really like the steam boat paddle wheel! Someone could make a great custom casino out of it! ;D
-
I thought we had seen these pics here. :hmm:
Maybe I'm wrong...
And I thought these items were custom made...Are you sure about your infos, these being in a glass cabinet in Zindorf?
Cheers,
Arnaud
-
I'm in love with the medieval tent and torture rack. Thanks for sharing.

The collector book definitely talks about this Mississippi steamboat as a prototype that was never produced. It doesn't have a picture, though.
-
some other prototype is mentioned??
-
Nope, it's the only one specifically mentioned.
-
Thanks Erwin for the pics!
these unreleased prototypes are way too cool to be on a mainstream market ;D
the medieval/torture set...cruel-looking, but i like it
i can see now why some magic sets include arabic pieces...they were transported from an unfinished theme!(?) -was that the begining of a middle-east theme? i don't see it related to the medieval theme at all...somebody explain to me!!! :hissyfit: :hissyfit: :hissyfit:
and what's exceptional about that medieval roof that we can barely see on the lower left? :hmm: ???
-
Thank you for this great gift for our eyes. Finally those myths took flesh and bones.
Steamboat looks a beauty but it is not my theme.I am jealous about that round tend. ;D
-

Well, the person(s) who originally posted the pics on Klickywelt (in 2009 or 2010 I think) claim that these are pics of the original prototypes and are kept in Geobra hands.
I'll go look for the thread on KW and post a link to it.
Some people have made customs of Mississippi-river steamboats, but usually these are based on the old houseboat 3540:
http://www.playmobil.de/on/demandware.store/Sites-DE-Site/de_DE/Product-Show?pid=3540-A&cgid=1978
-
We would appreciate the link, please! :)
-
Here's another link first (I rediscovered this one while searching for the prototype-thread), it shows a wonderful custom-river steamboat made from several 3540 houseboats by KW-member "Colt". The boat is called "Colorado Queen":
http://www.klickywelt.de/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=18909&p=426657&hilit=Colorado+Queen#p426657
(scroll up a bit there to see the best full pic of the custom-ship)
He made the hull and lower deck from 2 or 3 houseboats, the upper deck from Western Railway passenger-wagons, and the stearing-hut comes from the old white fishing-trawler.
-
Another link to another custom-Mississippi Boat... very nice one as well!
http://www.klickywelt.de/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=42995&hilit=raddampfer
(scroll down the page to see it)
-
Beautiful!
-
Found it again! :)
Here's the LINK to the THREAD on KLICKYWELT with info (also about other prototypes) & the pics from the PLAYMOBIL ORIGINAL PROTOTYPES mentioned above:
http://klickywelt.de/viewtopic.php?t=38779&highlight=raddampfer
The pics were posted there by KW-member "Ikeama" (usually a good source for all kinds of news about sets), and he writes that these prototypes are kept in Zirndorf behind glass...
-
Both boats look fantastic! The small one looks like an air boat used in the bayous, & swamps here!
-
We see lots of those air boats around here too!
-
Oh man, a steamboat would be so totally epic!! :yup:
-

Yes it would! :cloud9:
-
loaded with western cannons
-
Or playing cards & beer mugs with foam heads which are my favorite parts!
-
Yes, I would loooove to have some foam heads! I never got any of those. :-\
-
Thanks so much for these photos. It is fantastic to see these sets.
-
Yes, thank you! Very interesting! I wonder how people made the paddle wheels on the links that were posted. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks!
-
Yes, I would loooove to have some foam heads! I never got any of those. :-\
A decent substitute for the foam heads is just a bit of cotton shoved into the mug. ;)
A steamboat would have to come loaded with gambling stuff, plenty of beers, and some showgirls ala the lady from the gold nugget. ;D
-
Or ala some of daniela's customs. ;)
-
I absolutely love the Mississipi Steamboat
If I had the time and the talent, I would love to one day recreate the adventures of Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn but this would be a project of such epic proportions :-[
Well. one can dream :cloud9:
Karim :)
-
I hadn't seen this thread before... in a way it makes me sad that the sets were not released... BUT it does show that the design department developed these sets, which means that if the day comes when it is cost effective (IE direct marketed to collectors instead of kids for more $$$ :crossed: ) then perhaps these or similar sets would be produced... SO I am HOPEFUL!!! Hooray, and thanks for bumping this up or I never would have seen it!!!
-
Is it me, or is there a horned owl in that picture with the medeival torture equipment?! :o
I do wish they would reconsider producing really expensive sets like the steamboat or the ferris wheel for collectors. It could be only available through the website, under a collector section, similar to how lego markets the death star and other huge, expensive sets.
-
OOO there is in fact a horned owl!!! maybe we will at least get that :)
-

-
Yes, definitely a different owl.
-
I missed this thread!
The steamboat doesn't seem that big when you see the picture of it. I remember the western train when it came out and it was over $300 new.
The medieval "torture" equipment isn't torture at all. It's basically "time out" equipment.
Yet, they go and produce an executioner ... ???
-
i wonder are there more pictures of these prototypes ??? ??? ??? ???
-
Yeah, it is more like time-out equipment! I don't see anything horribly offensive about playmobil stocks. I mean stocks aren't fun, but kids' attractions all over the world have stocks kids can get into and try out. They aren't going to be scarred for life from learning about them. ::) Now I can see how MAYBE a rack or... thumbscrews  might cross the line. Maybe. But they really should release the stocks.
-
I agree with the stocks. In a lot of "family theme parks" or musea you can let your photo taken in one of these things.
-
Especially when the Playmobil Funparks have them.
-
 I rest my case!
-
There exist some pics where I am being put in those things; from several years ago when I was at a mini-meet at the Funpark in Zirndorf with Brubil, Arizzo and a few others... ::) ;D
-

Was that because you were being too unruly (because you were so excited to be around so much Playmobil!) and park security had to detain you? ;D
-
Looking at the kind of medieval sets that playmobil is producing today i cant see how these stocks fit in . The dragonland siege machine for example, look at that sci fi , masters of the universe typ eof set, i cant see how nice detailed historic sets will fit it to be honest ... shame really but i can see short lived sets only from now to respond to the market current trends and not too many items nor detail in them ... i doubt the steck city days will come back , maybe just maybe re releases for us collectors and thats about it... :hmm:
-
ill be super happy if they release this sets just for us collector!!! :)
-
If you look at the box art for the Executioner Special is that an "arm" for hanging the time-out gibbet?
If so, was that another prototype that never got released?

Yes, but "park security" were some kids

A youtube-video was posted by one of the playmo-fans on facebook, I'll share it with this link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dfU6WEBbO0
It starts with the origins of Playmobil and Horst Brandstätter, further in the video Hans Beck takes the word and it is shown how Playmobil-figures & items are designed and developped.
And... proof is shown about the prototype-pics in this thread! The pics are screenshots from this movie! Hans Beck talks about the prototypes that didn't make it into production, the asian horsemen are indeed Mongol Warriors, and there is a great view on the Mississippi Steamboat and the features it had!!
(movie is in German but with English subtitles)
-
Thanks Erwin, this is a great movie. Lots of animals too - but that is definitely not a chimpanzee at the zoo that they show. I'm pretty sure it's the Guinea Baboons that they still have there. The steamboat is pretty magnificent.
-
Thanks for the link Erwin! I loved the steam boat too..... hope someday they will produce it!!
-
This is great, Erwin, thanks for sharing! I love the quote from Hans Beck at 4:39... "We could reproduce the whole world in this way." They pretty much have! He certainly had vision, didn't he?
but that is definitely not a chimpanzee at the zoo that they show. I'm pretty sure it's the Guinea Baboons that they still have there.
Not sure they are baboons, Tim, but they're definitely not chimps! I think they are barbary macaques, maybe. Don't know why they wouldn't show chimps. ??? Whatever those are, they're not even apes, but monkeys. 8}
-
Well the ones they have at the Tierpark in that same enclosure now are Papio papio
, it's quite possible they've changed, it's been a while since this video obviously
-
Wow, thanks for sharing that link, Erwin! Great video.
-
Great video :)
-
Thanks for the pics, Erwin. I've heard about several of these sets but have never seen them. The riverboat is magnificent and I would love to have it and the "time out" equipment in my collection, along with a number of those round medieval tents.
-
along with a number of those round medieval tents.
These would look magnificent !!!!! I can see Atelier Cowabunga creating one for each custom knight etc , I would love to have lots of these tents !!!
-
Nice to see Hans Beck talking about playmobil, are there any other videos around where he talks about it?
It is kind of a shame though that later on despite his wishes, Medieval has become a theme thats only about war.
That's why I am also a bit mixed about the machine guns for the new cops.. it might be crossing a line.. the pistols might have been enough for the cops to arrest the bad clickies. What would bad clickies need to do during play that would require cops with machine guns to be deployed?
-
I think it wont be long we see some playmobil tanks and figher jets etc . Its what sell that matters and not Hans Beck principles anymore i am afraid.... :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:
-
I think it wont be long we see some playmobil tanks and figher jets etc .
Well, there sort of is one typical army-vehicle already. The new Top Agents' commander vehicle is quite resembling a real-world mobile SAM-system/truck.
http://www.playmobil.de/on/demandware.store/Sites-DE-Site/de_DE/Product-Show?pid=5286&cgid=Agenten
In the pic from the link above, they show only the missile-system at the back, the one in the front is retracted into the truck's roof.
-
What a lovely video. Shame horst has backed out on all the principles he gave here (no war in space etc..). I do find it strange that Beck says he hates violence. Almost all series have soldiers in them even the 1900 series. I don't like that they diss on the videogames. Those are the onces I grew up with and still play on my Mega Drive. I love the fact that they do everything by hand, they are really craftsmen!
-
It is a shame that they have not been able to stick to Beck's principles. We now do have futuristic sci-fi themes and the medieval themes focusing entirely on violence instead of everyday life. :( But on the other hand, I feel they are doing what they have to do. If they want their primary audience -- kids -- to keep buying the sets, they have to make what sells. :-\ It won't do any of us any good if the company goes bankrupt. So I fully support them in making more "modern" sets, as long as they also consider us collectors and take care of our wants.
-
both points are true, Bonnie - I totally agree.
-

I dont entirely agree with you bb. A successfull toy brand can create trents. Playmobil should have kept those principles and create more educational sets for themes like medieval. These new top agents look horrific and violent and aggressive and mutants etc , just not playmobil. even the smile is gone in some klickies. JUst not right . I will never buy these new sets and i hope they do so bad they are out soon . and they bring back steck and n :-X
-
I'm afraid as much as we'd like to think so, playmobil is not yet a big enough toy company to start trends. :-\ It certainly isn't in the US anyway!
-
Sadly its still standing in the shadow of lego in many countries.
Playmobil seems to have gained a lot of popularity in the Netherlands though, especially when Lego was doing so poorly. I was working at a toy store at the time and playmobil sold at least four times as much as lego back then.
Maybe they should look into employing more playmobil for schools and business. Theres clicky cops helping out training cops in afganistan after all, I believe clickies could just as well help with stage productions to show where everyone needs to stand and what to do, or they could try releasing board games featuring playmobil.
