Hi Guys!
In WWII my Grandfather was part of the British navy.
His ship, the Frederick S. Fales was part of the HX-72 convoy.
On their way to England (I believe) the ship was sunk by a u-boat.
Originally it was written down in the books that all crew members had died,
But of course that is not true as my grandpa made it back. (Along with several others.)
So my Uncle wrote a book on the whole thing
and basically changed a bit of what we knew about history. :)9
So in his memory I am going to transform a new ship that I just bought:
Into a representation of what his ship would have looked like.
Frederick S. Fales (http://www.uboat.net/allies/merchants/ships/552.html)
Ill be bringing you guys along for the ride,
so I will keep this thread updated with progress photos. :)
It is probably going to be a fairly quick custom...
But who knows? I may want to change a bit more after I get all the main changes done. :P ;)
Anyway, here is my idea in the very early stages:
The pipe is made of pieces of an old marble racer game that I no longer play with.
I was hoping for a smoother one, but if I can't find anything else Ill use that one.
Is there anyone here who knows of a Playmobil pipe I could use?
It would need to be fairly thick...
The pipe I have here is the right size that I am looking for.
I am probably also going to change the pole for one of the poles from the 3286.
I hope you guys like it. :)
-
A very interesting project, WoT. I look forward to seeing it develop.
-
Looks an exciting project, WoT :yup:
The only other pipes I can think of are the ones from the construction sets, but these are way to small for your needs :-\
Can't wait to see it completed :D
Damo :)

 Great project, WOT and one that has personal ties! Thanks for taking us along on your journey. ;D

This looks to be a fascinating project WOT.
Looking forward to seeing its progress.
Was your uncle's book published? if so do you have details of it? I'd be interested to read it.
My father sailed the other way, from the UK to US then sailed on board the 'SS West Point' which was formerly the liner 'SS America', to Singapore. I have an account that he kept of the journey which makes fascinating reading.

Thanks everyone, I am looking forward to doing it as much as you all are. ;D

Yes it was, it is called The First Convoy to Die by David O'Brien.

Good idea WoT. can't wait to see it develop!! It is indeed great that is linked to such personal history.
-
Looking forward to the completion of this promising project Warrior!!
-
What a wonderful and touching idea! Thank you so much for sharing with us....look forward to the updates

I can’t wait to see this one finished… 8-)

awesome! Got my eyes glued to this thread! Any pics of the actual ship by chance? all I could find was this:
Looks like ideally you'd have to go MacGuyver style and splice two ships lengths together, add a midcastle at the ship's halfway point, and add another mast as well. But if you're going for a simplified homage to the ship then of course you don't have to go that elaborate. Sorry, you got me all excited, lol.
And kudos to the homage to your Grandfather and the personal connection to it. I have the same pride whenever I mention my Grandpa being on the cover of Time Life magazine with two other soldiers from his battalion during the Korean War. Hmmm, perhaps I should re-create the cover scene ala playmobil as you are doing!
EDIT: ok, the embedded link to your ship wasn't working, so I just uploaded it directly (1st pic below). And my grandpa (not to hijack your thread, sorry) is in the 2nd pic, the Filipino soldier (fighting in the U.S. army) on the left.)

Which one is your grandfather, Atto?
-
Hi
I too will be looking forward to your new ship building adventure

Thanks guys, I have some new photos of my ship with a few more modified parts.
It is still in the thinking stage, but there are a few small things that are complete. :)
(Ill post pictures later today)
Sorry BP, but as far as I know, that is the only picture I could find. :-\
Unless my dad has a picture my grandpa took. ???

HI
It does not show up either way for me and I would like to see it

Here it is:

Sorry... :-[
Guess you'll just have to wait until it's finished. ;)

Here are those update photos as promised.
First you can see I added guide wires to help keep the mast stable.
I got lucky here because this ship comes with several extra wires
that I just strung up there for now to get an idea of what the wires will look like.
Then I switched out one of the antenna for a strobe light.
Since I will also be using this ship as part of my fake Kingdom
I added the Rutilian flag to the back of it. I can take it on and off depending,
When I show you the finished ship I will have it off,
I was just testing. ;)
And here's the crew. The captain I switched out with a coat for a more historical look,
then the other crew member I gave some baggy pants and a low belt. (Just for fun.)
And finally have a passenger whom I will give a vest too
when I order my next batch of parts... (Which should be today! ;D )
I will be painting the pipe black with a red top. We will go shopping for the pain in the next couple days. :)
I hope you like the new additions.
-
It's looking great, WoT! This is such a neat project. I love your crew for the ship, too. Can't wait to see it finished!
P.S. Have fun shopping for the pain. ;D

No, that's what YOU said!

The crew look just right for the period, WoT.

Thanks Gordon,
I was curious about the Green jacket lad though. ???
I guess he could be.

Thanks Gordon,

I guess he could be.
Well, there wasn't a standard uniform in the merchant navy (and maybe there still isn't). The only possibly odd thing about the lad in the green jacket is the holster, but that could just be because he's the engineer and carries a wrench about in it.
-
Don't you mean paint?
Exactly what I meant to get across, but from the opposite way, as it were.
-
Looking good... ;)
-
Which one is your grandfather, Atto?
the soldier on the far left.
FYI if you go back a page or two I uploaded the pic directly of the SHIP since folks were having trouble with that link.
And AWESOME additions to the ship so far! Can't wait to see it finished!
-
Great project WOT. I love history like this. I also think the crew looks really nice. Can't wait to see the finished ship.
-
Thanks guys.
I lied about ordering the parts today. :P
Apparently I called to late... (past 2:00!!! :o )
So Ill order them up tomorrow. ::)
It is my biggest order yet!
In addition to the parts I need for the ship,
I am ordering a few extra crew members,
Lots of knights with weapons and armor,
And a few other things! :o
59 separate items in total,
and a few of them I will be ordering multiples of. 8}
I hope I get free shipping.
-
Thanks, Atto! I can see it now.
-
HI
Thanks for the picture. It really helps to visualize why it is being built the way it is and the whole castle in the middle suggestion .
In the US you also have to order $150 of parts to get the free shipping and even though the list is long it is not a lot of parts .

More changes. ;)
I moved the pipe into the cargo area of the ship.
This makes it a little more realistic looking,
since the captain couldn't actually see, where it was before.
And the pipes were not as tall as I had it before. :)
This also opened up more room on deck...
and opened up new possibilities. :)9
Like adding a hole at the bottom of the pipe to shovel coal(?) into.
And as you can see, I also added a little flame down there... ;)
I hope you like the changes,
and anyone correct me if I have something wrong or historically inaccurate.
Like, did they burn coal in the pipes? ???
-
Well the coal (I am not sure they still used coal by that time, did they?) was burning in the furnace and the pipe is an exhaust of the furnace.
Great work underway Warrior!!

Nice transformation, very nice tribute to your grandfather, well done.

I managed to find the book on Amazon, thanks WOT.
Sandy is very interested in anything to do with ships, and I'm sure he would enjoy this so I thought I'd give it to him for his birthday on the 27th..
(I can also get to read it too ;))

Hey guys!
I am gonna get new parts for the ship
probably sometime this week! :D
So I will show you the pictures as soon as they arrive. :)
-
cool! I was thinking about this project the other day and wondering how it was going. :picsplz:
-
Like adding a hole at the bottom of the pipe to shovel coal(?) into.
Yes, most likely the Frederick S. Fales would have been triple reciprocating steam engined.
Like, did they burn coal in the pipes? ???
No, in a specific box (called “fireboxes” IIRC) that were at the base of the “Stack” (BTW, those pipes are called “stacks”; “pipes” are another set of constructs within the ship).
