I recently got a new pirate boat with the pirate emblem already on it. I hate it. ¿Does anyone have an idea to take it out?
-
You need to show us the sail, so we may be able to help you!
-
from which ship were these ??

Set 5869 (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=5869&pics=on)
Large, ragged sail, part number 30 81 5502
(http://playmodb.org/parts/30%2081%205502.gif)
I can patch the sail myself, but I can't get the picture off of it. Advice?
-
The picture will be printed on and the solution may be not one of taking it off as covering it over, e.g. by dye.

My thoughts exactly Gordon! You could use plastic paint or dye in what ever color you desire to change it to!
-
maybe you will have to dye the sail black. :hmm:
otherwise the print will always be visible.
you could always try to use a sail form another ref. schooner but i think they all have a print. :'(
-
IMHO you should try to get one of the other red sails to replace the colored one:

Or is it any imprint at all that bothers you?
There are some discussions along pirates anyway that the ripped sails are in itself tremendously unrealistic. ;)
So, maybe you will end up in making your own, custom-designed sails after all.
We are looking forward for pictures...

Treu, if something does not fit your design...improvise.... ;D ;D ;D

Ok, so I reviewed the suggestions quickly and…
I’ve tried hiding the imprints with marker pens and crayons (with a prior sail), I tried painting over it (with hand paints and even with spray paint). Of the options, the only one that actually hid the imprint was spray paint, which stiffened the material to the point it became worthless. With everything else the image still showed through.
Maybe if I didn’t hate pirates, or it was some other type of image (like a fishing symbol), this wouldn’t be an issue. Unfortunately, I hate pirates…

Well, then there is no other way than to pimp the ship to a civilian one, using schooner sails or self made ones.
The later is fun, I especially like the fact that you can work for two of the foremost sails, which make the ship look much more impressive. (like in the good old http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3740 :) )
(even though it is not easy to find fabric of the original playmo consistency... :-\ )

Uh, ya... Nobody seems to know what it is.

I am aware of that thread; It was kind-of agreed that broadcloth made an acceptable replacement, but isn’t the original material.

I had some black interfacing (sometimes called vilene) so thought I'd try this.
I'm not sure if this was heavy or medium weight but it was the thickest the shop had.
I divided the material into four (without cutting it) folded over the first quarter and ironed it then folded over the next and ironed that, then finally the fourth quarter.
Together the four layers made an almost identical material to the sails.
I'm short of a sail on one of my ships so I'll try it and post photos if it works OK.
(I now need to go and get some more for what I needed it for in the first place!)

I thought the heavy duty was adequate as a single layer when I was experimenting.

The interfacing I have is the iron-on variety and I don't think it is as thick or as stiff as the non iron-on, but becomes thicker and firmer when ironed. Using the four layers of the weight I had made it almost identical to the original sales.

a close up of both types of material ...

The sails were very easy to make - I used a leather punch for the holes and a craft knife for the little slits at the bottom of the sales.
Here is the completed ship - unfortunately I didn't realise that this ship was missing 2 long grey spars, so had to use tan coloured ones - I do think it would have looked better with grey.
I cut the pattern for the sails from the schooner sails as they didn't have pieces cut out of them. I did wonder if I should have cut the main sail a bit shorter because it slightly covers the lantern (Gordon will be telling me off - saying it's a fire hazard ;D)

I did experiment with a silver pen on a spare piece of material and found that I could have put some sort of markings on the sails, but decided to leave them for now.
All in all I was quite pleased with how they turned out.
We took it out on the beach for a sail this evening so I'll post some photos of that in the Photography section.

Very impressive work, Elaine.
I have some spar spars I'm sure for this ship in grey. I'll have a look tomorrow and scan them in and post them for you to see. Then, if they're the right ones they are yours.

Thanks Gordon, I'd be very grateful for any spare spars (even spar spars ;D) I'll have to get making some more truffles ;D

Wonderfull job Elaine!! I really need some sails on two or three of my boats and i think i'll try for your method!!! I might come back asking you a few questions in the process though...
Thanks for sharing!!!

Well, I should try it.
Tommarrow (too late tonight) I’ll print out the suggestion and see how it turns out.
