Title: Dragonland
Post by: Wolf Knight on March 27, 2010, 21:22:48
I really like to share this with you guys!!!
Don't know if somebody else (apart from Richard) showed you any of this but I have all the sets (apart from the big catapult/prisoner carriage) decorating my livingroom!
I am really amazed with the new variety on the figures and the mythical aspect of the whole theme. I even watched the story around it on the french playmobil site but could not get a hold of the whole story (my french is rusty). Did you know that this towers are build on top of a dragon who was covered with lava while he was sleeping?? The knights who build these towers discovered that the blue fire (the dragon's breath) would give power to their weapons, while the heart of the dragon (the golden shield and sword) would give them magic powers in order to fly...after that i got lost with who started the fighting and why...

Any way here is how i have set them up for the time being. I am looking forward to setting them up even better!

They make a very attractive setup Wolf!  :lens:

I hope to get the two "castles" and some of the supplementary sets as soon as I can here in the US, but like you I have reservations about the big catapult/prison, it's just a bit too silly.

The black dragon looks great, but the red wyvern on the left is I think a repeat of the "chicken dragon" whose wobbly loose wings were the subject of much discussion here on Playmofriends last year. Are the wings on your one subject to disconnecting when you reposition them?

Title: Re: Dragonland
Post by: Wolf Knight on March 28, 2010, 07:46:35
You are right Martin, that red wyvern is very similar to the ''chicken dragon'', apart from the fact that it has less articulation points than its ancestor.

The wings can be disconnected easily after assembling, and that is if you pul them hard, but so is the issue with the older dragon... at least with mine.
Title: Re: Dragonland
Post by: Martin Milner on March 28, 2010, 13:34:05
Good to see some close ups of that wyvern, thanks Wolf Knight!

It's clearly not the exact same mould, so the problem is hopefully reduced or eliminated, and it does provide a different dragon figure.

The chicken dragon's wings tended to fall off if you looked at them funny. There has been a fix prescribed, here:

Oh, so the chicken dragon is the one from 5840. No its not the same as mine. Totaly different mould. I like this one better. Maybe early stages of design were overlooked, thus the falling apart wings...
Do you ever get the feeling Martin that some sets are not very well designed these days? I have this feeling with 4806 ghost ship...

Post by: playmo1989 on March 28, 2010, 16:05:58
why you call the old dragon chicken dragon ? i don't like these new dragon sets they are some of the worst of playmobil toys ever made apart from the figures and the dragons wich are beautiful the castle...etc is not that impressive for me!!the towers remind me some cheap night's toys for boys!!  what do you think ?
Title: Re: Dragonland
Post by: Wolf Knight on March 28, 2010, 16:37:50
On the contrary, although I am a huge fan of the old steck castles and I am trying to get as many steck sets or pieces as I can, this new theme is very mythical and atmospheric... Perhaps if I had placed a proper background, foreground and added some lighting....but that takes time I cannot spare right now...

If you liked fantasy literature and also watched the story for this theme on the german and french playmobil site you'de be very happy that playmobil produced them! Pity that Playmobil Hellas did not even bother with producing at least a special leaflet for it. They are also very well designed and manufactured, with loads of extras, trapdoors, dungeons etc...the only thing I am not happy about is the scale of the whole thing. The castle is disproportionate to the clickies...

As for the older dragons, I am not sure we refer to them as chicken dragons, but we definately do for the dragon of 5840 set, because he looks like a chicken... ;D ;D

if i had read the story perhaps i would have an other opinion ,i'ts not your picture i've seen the series on the net katalogue strores specificly i don't like towers and that gate the others are nice . do you remeber how much they costed?
Title: Re: Dragonland
Post by: Wolf Knight on March 28, 2010, 17:19:31
All the sets together cost about 250 euros. It is quite a lot but its fun discovering the new aspect and designs of Playmobil. Who knows? They might not even produce sets with similar design, especially on klickies.
Title: Re: Dragonland
Post by: playmo1989 on March 28, 2010, 19:06:30
i hope not
i'am joking yes they might not produce them again but there will be still on the market for a few years. there are some parts that light on why is this from the story you have read?
Title: Re: Dragonland
Post by: Wolf Knight on March 28, 2010, 20:56:40
The weapons light up because the breath of the dragon (blue fire) gave them its mugic touch...
The big dragon's mouth also lights up but the effect is not very exciting...not nearly as ecxiting as the blue flame flashing!!!!

a !! the chains that opens the gate are plastic or metal?
Title: Re: Dragonland
Post by: Wolf Knight on March 28, 2010, 21:14:23
they are plastic. Note that the if I lower that gate you will realise that the rock is actually the head of the dragon...

i didn't understand that :o you meant that the rock will seem like the head of a dragon? metal parts are not used any more by playmobil this is bad!

I suspect they had complaints or a safety aspects to consider. Kids these days are likely to poke, pry up nose, swallow or otherwise injure themselves if allowed to play with anything, and then the parents will try to sue the company for their offspring's stupidity.

I'm happy that in my day we were allowed more dangerous toys, and if one or two children killed or maimed themselves, it was put down to natural wastage and added to the Darwin Award List.

On a slight tangent, has anybody else noticed the near-simultaneous release of the Playmobil Dragon World theme with the Dreamworks Animated Movie "How to Train Your Dragon".

Knowing Playmobil's track record I can't help cynically chalking this up to more luck than judgement, but I bet it'll help with Playmobil's sales.

Hey i did not know about that...just looked at the trailer!!! looks really good! it would certainly boots up the sails, although i do not see this theme surviving a lot int the greek market...greek mums hate strange creatures...

These new dragons , especially like the red one look like the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons sets from the 80s from LJN, look quite like the Tiamat dragon toy ( with less heads  ;D) , combining these playmobil sets with  these old  AD&d sets ( i have a large collection) including the very cultish fortress of fangs should be an interesting notion.....
Title: Re: Dragonland
Post by: Wolf Knight on March 29, 2010, 14:00:03
Those were great toys Giorginetto!! I can recall that fortress of fangs having so many features like the alley/tunnel with the spikes come out of the wall. Dragonland in not nearly as sophisticated as the AD&D sets but it can be a great stronghold... I 'll go back home and post some more images...

They are not playmobil, they are Advanced Dungeond and Dragons inspired from the role playing game.

A few more details about dragonland... On the first image you can see the closed gate that protects/covers the dragon's breath. You will notice that the gate is actually the head of the dragon....

While on the second, the blue flame (dragon's breath) that hides behind it gives its magical powers to the knight's weapons making them stronger and more effective....

They were made by LJN and then mattel . Some very cultish action figures some MISC go for up to 300-400 dollars. Very nice artwork on teh cartons and a nice set - fortress of fangs that works nicely with playmobil. i have two of these sets one boxed ( but opened  :-\) and many spare parts for these rare sets. i have about 200 actions figures some common ones many times over as i really liked these sets . you can find them on ebay and many loose items. The northlord weapons for example look awesome with mediaval / fantasy klickies . Will post some pictures later when i have some time  ;D ;D ;D

I really am enjoying this thread.
I was not thinking of buying any of these sets,
They seemed too fantasy and kidish to me...
But all the glow in the dark equipment, the new dragons, and the story behind it all has sparked a new "craving" ;)
Mostly the glowing stuff though...
(What can I say, I am attracted to glowing/sparkly/shiney/metal objects. )
But really, that new dragon is SOOO cool! If nothing else I will probably buy him! :yup:

This is the Dragon Heart...as i understood it from the short story at the playmobil site. It gives to the knigths the ability to ''grow'' dragonwings....

And a second picture with i who i believe are the leaders of the two dragon factions...

The Dragon Land theme is now available on Playmobil's US website.

I'm torn between ordering it there (I want both castles and the Black Dragon) and seeing if Learning Palace can get get it for me at 10% discount. Since it'll take a couple of weeks to arrive from Playmobil anyway, and in 2 weeks I'm moving, I'll probably go the Learning Palace route.

Despite being a steck devotee i really like the new dragons etc , on the 20th of june meet up i reckon i might be getting the whole dragonland series ..... needs to set sone separate kingdoms etc apart from the green dragon castle, the vikings and the magic forrest klickies ... reckon so these sets will make a fine addition , in that logic i should be very keen on e.g  the red dragon castle, but its not steck !!!!!   :P

Long ago, I discovered that the sword from AD&D's Warduke figure fits a klicky's hand nicely. I still have a customized "barbarian" figure armed with this sword that I made when I was a kid.

Hello

Thanks for all the great pictures of the new sets. We have already bought the large black dragon and it is a big hit. I was quite surprised by its size and was relived that Playmobil kept the production in-house. The "Chicken Dragon" was a big let down and did nothing to improve Chinas track record. The towers look interesting as stand alone's. It would have been nice though to be able to incorporate them some how into Sys. X or stecks for customizations. I will get them just for the collection but they are not at the top of my list. I would rather get a few more miscellaneous boxes of stecks. The kids love the figures and dragons and I think they will like the features of the lava clad dragon tower

Thanks for the story behind the theme.

Untill I "found" this guy! 30 00 7222 - Dragon Knight, green suit with armour, chainmail hair (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-00-7222)

He would make a perfect Elf!
I saw him and now I am bent on making a small elf army!
Probably after my Medieval army...
Or maybe after my Samurai army...
Then again I would LOVE some Napoleonic figures too! 8} 8} 8}
