Title: Reparing broken train connectors
Post by: Keesinho on January 31, 2014, 13:27:52
Hi Guys,

I recently acquired an old LGB playmobil train (the 4027) and to my regret, the connectors that keep the locomotive and the wagons together are nearly all broken. I've already contacted playmobil to see if they still sell replacement parts, but no...not anymore :-(

So I was wondering, what is a good way to fix these wagons?

See the attached photo for an example of a broken connector:

Surely these are what you want:

available from Direct Service.

I can not tell in your picture but you may also need 7561 (2 Wheel Assemblies w/Coupling) If the tabs that hold on the part that Gordon linked are broken then you will.

I was unsure about that too, Ras.  Even if the wheel assembly coupling isn't broken I've found that on rolling stock which had the LGB type coupling hook with the little "springs", the new style coupling hook can be a loose fit.  I think this is because on the original wheel assemblies the two prongs on the wheel assembly the coupling hook went over had a slot between them running across the truck or carriage and, over time, the prongs came closer together.  On the newer wheel assemblies using the current coupling hook, the slot between the prongs runs in line with the wagon or coach the hook assembly fits much tighter.  Of course, this not only makes things more expensive, but removing the wheel assemblies without damaging the tongues on the truck/coach chassis is a fiddly business.

(Oh, and if you keep the original wheel assemblies, you have to saw off the cross piece which the LGB type coupling rests against.)

Are you looking for these old style couplings?

I think he is and if so, I have some spare.

@Marco & @Playmofire,

indeed, i'm looking for the old ones. I'm not into that new RC stuff, its LGB for me! :-)

The new RC stuff fits the old playmobil train wagons. Isn't the old playmobil wagons made by Geobra anyways? Isn't it only the old engine blocks and brass track that were produced by LGB?

I run in summer a small garden layout with second hand LGB, Toytrain, Playmobil and RC Playmobil train. No problem at all.

Only the tracks were LGB, Ras.  The motor was a Playmobil one.

The "new" coupling hook actually is less likely to come uncoupled than the LGB one!

oh, I guess I understood it wrong

My goal is to restore the train to its original glory :) And if possible at all, I'd like to avoid using new parts.
Been looking into a universal LGB coupling, which resembles the playmo one very much. Just not sure if it will actually fit :-/

Trains are great fun though :) The only downside is the huge amount of space they require!

At LGB the spring is seperate from the hook. On the boom of the coupling the spring is connected with a screw. Playmobil was a little more clever in making the hook and spring one part, so connecting with a screw was not neccesary. The Playmobil system has one disadvantage: if the spring is broken, you need to replace the hook as well. The newer Playmobil couplings has a counter balance, that is less prone to damage.

Best is to replace the current old fashioned couplings on your car with a old fashioned hook with spring.

By the way: both type's of Playmobil couplings will perfect connect with the standard LGB couplings.

You got in before me, Marco.  The whole Playmobil coupling is quite different from the LGB universal coupler:

I have some spare couplers when I can find them.  How many do you need?

I've got 5 wagons , all in a very sad state. So i'm looking for 10, quite a bit :-S

So if I understand correctly, the LGB universal coupler cannot be fitted onto a playmo wagon?

It's normal just to have a hook at one end.

I can't say whether or not the LGB ones will fit, but if they will, it will only be after some alteration to them.
