DECKLID PATTERN for 3490/ 3286 Pirate Ship Foredeck
« on: October 03, 2010, 01:11:39 »
**********WAIT READ BEFORE PRINTING!  SOMEHOW, at least on my comp, I can't get it to print in the correct size from internet explorer!  It keeps scaling it up!  If this happens to you do the following:
1. click the direct link in this thread
2. in internet explore go to file menu and click "print preview."
3. in print preview change default dropdown menu from "shrink to fit" to "custom."
4. type in "74" under custom size (for 74%)
5. THEN print.

In all, the widest part of the base should be 10.6 cm wide (not including the tabs).  Sorry!  Good luck!****

Hi all,

This is for anyone who is annoyed by the gaping hole in the foredeck of their 3490/ 3286 Pirate Ship who may want to create a removeable deck lid for it.

I made a lid for my Black Pearl ship, but per WOT's request I made a template for a slightly different lid to fit a stock 3286 / 3490 Ship.

Materials you will need include
printer (to print out the template),
1mm thick sheet styrene (preferably with 1/4-inch-spaced "planks" to simulate the deck planks),
tape (to tape the template onto the styrene for tracing),
sharpy marker (to mark the pattern)
high-quality sharp/strong scissors or exacto knife (to cut the styrene to shape and to scuff the mating surfaces of the styrene sheets to be glued back to back)
cyanoacrylate glue

optional: dremel, or drill to bore mounting holes for wire loop for easier handling during removal of decklid (to gain access to guns).  Coated wire/twist tie (for the loop)

Basic Instructions:
1. print pattern
2. trace pattern onto styrene
3. cut styrene shapes
4. glue styrene.
5. drill holes
6. mount wire loop.

Fin.

A very neat idea and thanks for sharing it.  I'm using a similar but simpler decking idea on an old modified 3750 using that style of sheet plastic.  I can't remember the maker's name, but its Green-something.  Railway shops sell the stuff or it can be bought on line.

The name of the manufacturer of sheet styrene I used is everGREEN.  Maybe it's the same as your GREEN-something?

What part of the 3750 are you modding?  Since the 3750 has no uncovered hatches on deck, unless you're replacing a missing hatchcover that leads to the cargo hold, I'm guessing you're adding an additional level of decking perhaps?  Like a second tier of deck?  Quarter deck or forecastle perhaps?  You have me very intrigued......  Please, do tell!

You're right, Evergreen.  They do a good range of styrene sheets with different patterns on.

My 3750 custom is been ongoing (well, really, not going anywhere) for a good few years, just sitting in the loft.  The idea is to have four guns on deck, so I've cut out the below decks access and cut the deck sides down in a couple of places where the extra cannon will go, and it came to a stop there for lack of time.  The planking will cover the hole in the deck.  Maybe this year I'll get on a bit further with it.

My first 3750 I bought at the recycling skips for, I think, 50p!  It wasn't complete, but the spares were available from DS.

I see a lot of 3750 these days on ebay and Craigslist for cheap.  Since I like to custom (and repaint) I haven't the heart to paint over a classic ship, so I defer to abuse the blackbeard ships (as they are ugly IMO).  I have too many spare 3050 style ships.  They are a good standard, but for some reason they don't inspire me to do anything besides minor mods or repaint.  My current Blackbeard ship was going to be redone as a galleon;  I had already added a third mast and a fog sail, and bought paint to make it look right, but I've abandoned it for now because I now have 2 extra 3286 ships (I just won another ship off ebay for US$21)I've been contemplating splicing together ala Macgayver's Unicorn.  But that's a lot of work to bend the blow straight just to get it to glue to the 2nd hull.  Meanwhile, I hacked up my Zizzle Black Pearl for my 3286 custom, and the Zizzle remains seem to be calling to me: "HMS Victory" (even though it's a non-playmo ship).  I might just have to turn it into a ship for my clickies soon.

You should raise your 3750 from Davy Jones locker and get her back into service!  I want to see more ships!
