In 1987 when my son was around 2 years old, I saw the 3491 firefighters with equipment set in a fire profession magazine Christmas special edition. I ordered 4 of them, & became amazed of the attention to detail Playmobil had put into those sets! Later in life in 1998 I got the urge to find out if Playmobil was still producing firefighter sets & low & behold I found the brand new fire rescue theme :yippee:! Due to a 3882 single firefighter, I was hopelessly addicted from then on! Back in 1998 Playmobil was very easy to find in educational toy shops, & the mom & pop toy stores! Since that time I have witnessed many of the shops I did business with disappear :'(, but I'm still collecting, & accidentally found eBay in 1998, I've been doomed ever since :-[!
Forget about all of the other stuff,....all we need is the reintroduction of the 3526 Fire Engine!

i started collecting with my children in the early 1980s.  we started with the macdonald's happy meal freebies, here is a photo of my son's first klicky and you can see by the wear on the silver that it was played with quite a bit. unfortunately we were never able to buy the bigger sets, our toy budget was quite limited.   kaethe

I've always said that our first Playmobil was the 5300 Dolls house bought for my eldest son back in 2000 but thinking about it, before I became interested in Playmobil, he did have the 3453 Blue and Yellow Tow Truck that I bought from someone in 1995, and we also had the 3780 garbage truck.
We do still have one of the green bins, but I have no idea what happened to the two vehicles   ???
Thinking about this again, earlier still, my sister gave me a few knights and horses that had belonged to my nephew which I now realise were from the 3265 Jousting Knights set, but as the boys didn't show any real interest in knights, these were given away to someone else. :-[

Nice pics!

The one I have below is from 1982, year when I became fanatic for playmobil :P

My first set was a gift from my great-grandmother, for my 2nd birthday, in 1978, but I was too young, then. (It was a firetruck of the old traditional ones.)

In 81-82, as I was turning 6, I began ask my parents for playmo, and, since then, always they asked me what I wanted, I'd say playmobil. In my 6th birthday, I had quite a bunch of pirates, city (hospital, construction, cars) and western. Also, two airplanes, like the ones Richard likes ... Only, one red, and the other yellow (mail).

The 6th birthday, mom and dad made a pirate ship cake, with playmobil over it.
When I was turning 7, an old aunt made a flying saucer, and there were klickys over it. (On that year, 1983, I was given the playmospace ship :) )
At the 8th birthday, the decoration of the party was an airport table with the planes.

These were the beginnings of my collection (which didn't survive to my youth, though ...).

I remember one Christmas that I was given a set of TVI; and on another, the western soldier fort.

To have lived in Portugal in 1990-93 was wonderful, because I saw the first Victorian sets  ...

Both.
I got my first few when I was younger, say 8 or so. But I only had a few sets until I got engaged to this “woman” (let’s not say too much else about her) which I broke off later on. I dropped out of collecting for years, until another lady came into my life (I’d known her years before). She had three kids at the time, and when I decided I was getting somewhat serious about her I started collecting again. (We’re married now.)
If I’m jealous, you did SOMETHING right. Keep it up. :D

It's very fun to read how everyone started collecting. I started in 1981 or 1982. Even in high school, my parents gave me small sets. My children are now a wonderful excuse to buy Playmobil.

I was lucky enough to still have my childhood playmo (1979-1986) when we started more serious with it again in 1992. The kids have been extra excuses for buying things but since enrolling to this forum the playmo fever is bigger then ever before!
