Why don't you take it to a model railway shop and see what they can do for you.  There are a lot of garden railway enthusiasts in the UK so it should be not hard to find a multitude of shops that could help you.

If it is not to far from me I would be willing to look at it for you.
I live in North Wales.
These units are the old original type and keep on lasting.
The wires with the capacitor have been removed from ther holder shown in the photograph.

I'm in Hertfordshire, England. But I could post it to you and pay you the return postage etc :-\

but then they may be no point if it will never work.

The plastic track clip it is completely broken which is why the wires are no longer in it :-\
