I managed to find the book on Amazon, thanks WOT. 
Sandy is very interested in anything to do with ships, and I'm sure he would enjoy this so I thought I'd give it to him for his birthday on the 27th..
(I can also get to read it too ;))

No, in a specific box (called “fireboxes” IIRC) that were at the base of the “Stack” (BTW, those pipes are called “stacks”; “pipes” are another set of constructs within the ship).
