I don't know if this item ihas been on the board before, but I'm curious what you guys think of this:
http://www.toplessrobot.com/2009/07/the_17_least_appropriate_playmobil_sets_for_childr.php
In my humble opinion: hilarious!
-
Its poorly titled.... should be called ... 17 MOST AWESOME sets for children
-
Yeap, talked about this topic before...

I still laugh every time I see this, though! I agree, this is why playmobil is great. There's nothing politically correct about it.
-
Definatly a great article, theres a few sets missing on the list though: The Dentist and the dancing bear come to mind.
I still like all of them though, its these risks and out of the box thinking that sets Playmobil apart from other toys. Lego never tries anything remotely risky or controversial anymore.

Of course it is.
It's just that PC mores change with time.
They wouldn't dream of issuing a set featuring a homeless person nowadays for eg. Nor would they include alcohol in any set containing road workers.
Don't you think?
-
What is more, I think that PM's policy of not producing modern warfare toys is as much a product of its time (the mid-70s in Germany) as anything else.
Had they been around during the war I am sure that the tune would have been different. A bit like Hugo Boss (or whoever it was) designing uniforms for the Hitler Jugend.
:)
-
It's probably for the best that Playmobil did not exist during Wolrd War 2, if there where Nazi clickies produced the company would not have survived outside germany, it would always have been associated with Nazi's long after the war. And I am pretty sure playmobil would have been forced by the government to create them to promote the cause.
What was Hans Beck's part in the war by the way?
-
I doubt it. Many large companies that exist to this day had an active role in Nazi Germany: producing vehicles, weapons, uniforms and so on. Everything's been forgotten now anyway ... which I think is fair too.
I have nothing against Germany and its people mind you. Quite the opposite ;D ;D ;D
I wouldn't know what Hans Beck did in the war. But I do personally know old people - 60 and 70 year olds - who used to be in the Youth and so on ... and yet they are perfectly likeable people. It's what you did at the time, I guess.
Everyone's smart with the benefit of hindsight :) :)
-
They forgot to list the huge beer barrel & wooden beer mugs complete with foam add-on set,......sooooo, here's to 18! :**:
-
At the time of it being issued, the workers set with the beer did create a bit of a scandal with the public in Germany and later sets had milk bottles in the crates.
As for the two "authors" of that site, they really must get out more into the real world where they will see that Playmobil is a rather gentle reflection of what the real world is like.

Yep, like volkswagen, for instance. That was Hitler's creation, yet the company has thrived down to this day.

I still think nothing beats noah's ark as unappropriate.... But that's just me..
And I never understood why we can have cowboys and indians, medieval knights, pirates and redcoats, cops and robbers.. the bows and guns and swords and maces and ... aren't to pick flowers... but no soldiers... At least we have machine guns coming next year!
As to the rest, like playmofire said - it's a very "gentle" version of the world.

Exactly

what machine guns we'll have next year? did I miss that set?
-
I think in the new police theme.

I think in the new police theme.
Yep! HOO-YAH!
-
I am not really sure that adding machine guns is that appropriate.. it might be crossing a line. At first the cops didnt even have guns after all.

Yes, & times change P)! We now have Playmobil SWAT, automatic hand guns, & rifles with sniper scopes :yippee:! BRING on the machine guns :woohoo:!

Do tasers exist in Playmoland?
::)

I honestly would rather be shot than tazed.

The real question is...what's your Klickies opinion ?
Ace :brownhair:

   Well, they think whatever I tell them to think. ;)

My klickies have a free reign! :)
Sorry, off-topic!
-
Yeah, we are off topic, sorry! :-[
-
We should start coming up with such articles for the forum. It would be fun.
Unfortunately I'm bogged down with assignments and studying at the moment ... but when I have some free time I would be willing to give it a go. For example I have an idea for 'deconstructed' reviews of old sets which I own.
But alas ... time's winged chariot and all that ...
-
Heh well most sets could be described as inappropriate if you try hard enough.
Just don't take any of this seriously.
Any pirate set = bad example for children, pirates are criminals.
Playmobil hospital only has smiling patients, could give the impression they are on drugs.
Playmobil police force has guns, they could be used to shoot the unarmed criminals instead of arresting them.
Playmobil construction workers lack any female clickies, feminist organisations might not agree with this.
Playmobil circus and zoo show its alright to have animals in captivity, PETA might not like this.
Some playmobil vikings have fur coats or capes, again PETA might not like this.
The gold miner's set has a black clicky, could be implied as forced labour.
Ghosts, ghost pirates, dragons and other unnatural creatures could be seen as inappropriate to religious groups.
Christmas displays depict baby Jesus, could also be seen as inappropriate by christian groups to depict Jesus as a toy.
Of course this is just examples, but in this crazy world I can actually see it happening that there could be people out there who actually think like that.
-
   Very good points. I like the all the PM sets, appropriate or no...
-
That's true, honestly it seems just about everyone here is offended by some set or another, whether it's guns, animal cruelty, promotion of Christianity, promotion of magic, we're all offended by something! But at the same time I think we all love that about playmobil, too, that they just objectively depict the real world, along with certain myths, and you decide what you want to buy and what you don't. If gladiators offend you, don't buy gladiators.
-
If gladiators offend you, don't buy gladiators.
Exactly! Playmobil is it's own company, and they will make whatever they want. If something offends you, well, don't buy it! :)
-
That's pretty much how it should be yes. :)
And it certainly applies to more than just playmobil.
-
Do tasers exist in Playmoland?
::)
They do in Playmobil City ;)!

Sorry, I'm answering a question intended for you, Bill. :-[

Love that custom taser!
-
Thank you, everyone! Those were the days !

AWESOME Bill!

I started by looking at the original '17 most inappropriate PM sets..' and was surprised at what the authors considered unsuitable for children, until I realised it was tongue-in cheek (to say the least). I guess every parent/adult responsible for children has to make their own judgement about what to allow/encourage their children to play with. As a child (back in the 60's) I was never allowed any form of toy gun, but my brothers and I did play 'cowboys and indians' with Britain's plastic models. However, I did develop strong pacifist tendencies from my parents' attitudes. We all influence our children in different ways, sometimes unwittingly, sometimes what we do verges on indoctrination. The PM zoo we gave our children for Christmas had no Polar Bears in it, a conscious choice (real Polar Bears are said to go mad in captivity).
Actually, I think some PM items are merely confusing for our children (in the UK)- the post-boxes, phone boxes, armed police, etc. in no way reflect their day-to-day experience. But then I think putting humans with dinosaurs is daft!
-
well it is important to show responsibility for what toys you give your children yes, or give a good explanation when they come with questions.
I dont have kids myself, just two nephews of 8 and 10.
The youngest received a redcoat soldier with cannon from me for christmas, and he didnt know what the thing on the gun was for so I explained him that it was a bajonet and used instead of a sword after the soldier shoots. I made sure to not talk about it being used for killing or death, but just to fight.
Usually I also talk to them about soldiers being defeated or such, not about being killed.
And for my diorama's and stories I plan to keep everything suitable for children to read. Sometimes a clicky might die in my stories but it would be rare.
Thats just a personal preference though since I am writing other stories with plenty of war and violence. With Playmobil I try to explore a more light hearted way of telling stories, and the friendly clickies really serve as an inspiration for that.
