Title: Playmobil exhibitions in the U.S?
Post by: PlaymoMan on November 12, 2011, 00:42:43
I was just wondering - are any Playmobil exhibitions being held in the U.S? :)
Specifically, Northeastern U.S. Thanks!

So far, there has never been one. It's something we've sure talked about before, though! We've mused that somewhere on the east coast would be a good spot... there are a few collectors in North and South Carolina, and I think I might drive all the way from Louisiana if I had an opportunity to set up my zoo! ;D I think it's high time we manage to arrange one in the US, something fairly simple, just an exhibition of several dioramas made by collectors.

An exhibition would be so much fun.

If its hosted, it might be good to inform Geobra of it as well. Good opportunity for them to set up shop and sell playmobil to both visitors and collectors.
And a good opportunity for collectors to talk with the people of Geobra and overall leave a good impression.

Maybe we should start by figuring out who feels they could set up a decent-sized diorama, and in what theme, if it were close enough for them to get there. Then we could talk about location.

I would love to set up a zoo diorama, so that's one. Who else has a diorama they could set up?

I know BB could set up an awesome dio with his big building with the fog machine and continuous water supply, if he's willing.

True, but I'd need an eighteen wheeler to transport everything, bb! Are you gonna load & unload, set up & take down, everything, I'm just sayin' ;D?

I've been thinking if/when one of these shows eventually gets done that there could be a small/mini-diorama or custom figures section. Something where people from other parts of the country who can't attend in person could mail their display with some set-up photos and someone at the show could set them out. It would increase the amount of apparent involvement and give people farther away a chance to take part.

Yup, It's too darn bad that the we collectors and U.S. are so DARN large and spread out. Makes it so hard to haul all of our jewels around for an exhibit.

In Europe, many can easily drive within a few hours to an exhibition site where 20 other collectors are installing their set ups. This just ain't fair!

Maybe we should do it in BB's hometown since he is the one who needs a semi to transport his rescue and fire squadronsssssss. Bill, What town do you live near, and how far is it off which Interstate? Do you know of a place where you could exhibit that might have a little space for the rest of us?

I would be willing to see if we can work a deal with a Courtyard or another similar hotel for a weekend rate and a few extra rooms somewhere, but we would need to make it convenient for Bill.

It may be too difficult for him to haul his stuff to Cary, NC where we live. Obviously there would be a space limit at any place we chose, so Rasputin's 89 or so buildings of PM would be a bit much for our size limitations. Cheers, Pgal

Having it near BB might be a good idea, since his would be the hardest to transport. I'd have a lot to transport too, but there's two of us and we've got a van, and everything is very organized so it could be done... assuming we had the time and money to travel at the time. Plus SC is a pretty central point along the East coast.

This is an excellent idea! I saw a picture of a showacse of customs at some exhibition somewhere, so we could do something like that, with the names of their creators by them. And the small dioramas could be set up by collectors who live in the area and would like to come but don't really have a diorama to set up themselves.

And of course the dioramas don't have to be on the level of some of the huge exhibitions we see in Europe. Just as long as they are creative and original enough to be something interesting to look at, each dio doesn't have to be massively huge.

Found it: http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=8019.45

In that thread, I see we had strayed into discussing more of a conference, and I think most of us are more interested in an exhibition, with lots of dioramas. And I think there are enough of us with big collections to pull that off. So whether you want to discuss there or keep discussing here s up to you.

I would do one in the US but not that far away. I am on the west coast and can do all themes in very large dioramas. Our western one alone takes up about 400sq.ft. The Knights would take up more and the Roman/Egyptian one less. The modern theme with construction, train, fire, police, airport, boats etc would be the largest. Pirates would be big as well due to the 50 ships we have. The Victorian could be mixed in with the western or alone. There is enough to do them separately.
We have enough jungle them and adventure to do one of those also.

I would love to do one

I have often thought you could basically do one yourself, Ras, since your collection is quite varied. That's how Elaine started out, isn't it? Doing Kirkbean by herself and others have joined in. If you wanted to take the initiative, others could contribute if they wanted, but even if there weren't many others able to do it, you could have a decent exhibition.

I work well with others so doing one solo is no fun for me. I want to play not set it up and chase people off with a stick. I even contemplated setting up a display at the local train show and letting kids play for a designated time for a fee that goes to our schools. By play I mean touch the toys and move them around  :o

An exhibition in North America would be fine, as I too love road trips. Anything overseas, though, will not work.

And also, we could put "Please do not touch..." signs on each of the display tables. :)

Yeah, because everyone knows four-year-olds always read those signs and obey them. :P

I'm just teasing. Yeah, signs combined with ropes creating at least a one-foot space around the tables to keep the littlest hands off, would help at least. Plexiglass is ideal, but harder to accomplish.

I was more thinking of 10 year olds. I mean, most grown ups seem to be too stupid to read and respect a "do not touch" sign... imagine kids... No, like I said, not even an electrified fence!

I just use the buildings and a few of the klickies. Both of our Western and Victorian themes are large enough to have their own dioramas but sometimes one huge one is fun too. We also do not know what to do with the fairy stuff so we hide them in some forest randomly. The Palace stuff we are trying to fit in to the Egyptian theme

Ras,

Looks like we need to build you a small ocean for your PM fleet! Holycow!

I am guessing that you have one of the largest collections on the West Coast and that BB has the same on the East Coast. So it would make sense to have you two each select a place and time for an exhibition, and the rest of us fall in line. That way you don't have to rent a long haul semi to move all of your precious belongings to a show. A short haul semi might be necessary though!

Maybe the East Coasters could hit BB's show, and the West Coasters could go with Ras. bb might have to go to both since she lives in the middle of the country....sorry! And we could share videos of both shows with the other coasters.

If it could be on a holiday weekend besides Thanksgiving, maybe a three day show would attract more folks. Not sure exactly where either of you live, but you could choose a venue that works for you. That is my two cents worth, Pgal

We have the wine country in Sonoma County CA  :cham:

I could buy a very large enclosed trailer and take it with my truck. A 24 foot trailer is the longest they make and that sounds a like too much .

Its displaying and playing that takes all the room.

We are just settling at our new house and we are bringing out lots of stuff so I can start taking pics..

Title: Re: Playmobil exhibitions in the U.S?

This is a wild idea, so I'll just let er rip...So what if BB did a show in his area over Memorial Day weekend (end of May) for East Coasters and Ras did a show in his area over Labor Day weekend (early Sept.) for West Coasters? And some really fortunate folks might be able to make it to both events.

It could be a two day show so folks could travel a day before and after the events. And we could find a reasonably priced hotel that would throw in a few large rooms for displays. How many of you would be willing to pay $80. a night for 2-3 nights for a hotel room at either event (if we could find a hotel at such a low price?) Individuals may want to share to keep the cost down.

We are assuming someplace in/near Sonoma County, CA for the West Coast show over Labor Day weekend and someplace in SC for the East Coast Show over Memorial Day weekend. If we finalized the dates this month, those who need to arrange their vacation time for 2012 would be able to do it.

The first question is would Ras and Bill B be willing to set up their small cities on one of those dates? Or would July fourth work better for one of them? Once they buy in, we could get a show of hands for how many would be interested in attending which show for a certain date. Any other ideas here folks? Thanks, Pgal

Well, I would be a lot more likely to make the one on the east coast. I'm a lot closer to south carolina than to california! If there are enough of us going, we should be able to get a group rate at a hotel, and then it would be extremely convenient to be staying in the same building where we were exhibiting. Assuming we are able to make it, I would be interested in setting up a diorama, the bigger the better, really.

I think I could make it in July or August to Sonoma County if there was one there; it would be a lot of fun! $80 dollars a night for 2-3 nights sounds fine  :).  I don't have enough of one theme to set up a display, but I'd like to have a table for my Playmobil Times magazine where people could put down their e-mails to be on the online mailing list :D.

I am in Sonoma County but I always thought doing a show in San Fransisco would be more appropriate, big city, more people, more things for visitors to do and a better reason to go. Just my 2 cents, not that 2 cents get you anywhere nowadays.

I can do just about any day

Ras,

The SFO area sounds great! Any particular part of it that you recommend? Maybe somewhere not too far from the airport in case folks fly in and with lots for free parking for those who drive. Which May-Sept. holiday works best for you? Do you have a favorite hotel just outside the city? We have used the Oakland and San Jose airports as well, so they might have airport hotels that are empty on holidays, too.

If I remember correctly, downtown is really expensive. We stayed at 5th and Market I think last time at the Marriott about 8 years ago, and hotel rates have been high every time I have checked since then as well.

Any idea how much space you would need to set up the displays you are willing to bring? Those of us who fly in obviously won't be bringing much. It could be a great time for folks to trade sets and parts if they have the ability to bring them along.

Once we narrow it down to a location that seems to work, I'd be glad to help find a decent hotel with affordable rates and some meeting rooms they would throw in with the deal.

Cheers, Pgal

I try to avoid the city myself  ;D Kaethe lives in the Marina district so I will PM her about any possible locations in the city. I have no idea what it takes to set this type of thing up and never even thought about the whole air port proximity, hotel, rent a car things. Perhaps knowing what people are looking for when visiting from out of town it would help to narrow down locations. I would just drive in everyday as it is about 1 hour away. People are more than welcome to stay at our farm as there is room. I even have pop-up campers, 30foot camping trailers, tents & even room in the houses people could use.
