Hello everyone,
it's been a while since I've last visited the forum, sorry for that. :-[
I was wondering if there were any plans for a secret santa for this year? The holiday season is approaching and I've always found it a great way to share the holiday spirit, to get to know eachother and of course to give and get a clicky! ;D
I'd like to hear your thoughts about this, if it's still possible to organize and if you'd participate?
Cheers,
Gaetano

Hi Gaetano!
It would be a nice idea .... we mods talked about it a little bit, but now so close to Xmas I see it a bit difficult to organize.
:hatoff:

Hmm... Perhaps we could extend the 'deathline' towards the second week of January for example instead of Christmas? (I believe this was the case in my first secret santa.) That would give us some more time? ???
-
In the past we've not done it as Christmas thing here, but more as a New Years gift. We could look at doing Valentine's Day maybe? That would be mid-February so plenty of time.
What would probably make most sense for here would be to do it for Friendship Day - in 2012 it's August 5. That's quite a while at this point though, but it's worth thinking about.
-
I think a Secret Thingamabob would be great! :D
(I say Thingamabob because it sounds like it wont be fore Christmas, therefor not a Secret Santa.) ;)
-
I do not know what this all implies exactly, but sounds good! :hatoff:

Any date would be great as long as the basic concept is there. :) Perhaps if the event would be placed in the months when new sets are arriving (january-march, july-september for example), members could use the parts from those sets as an extra novelty?
Conniefrere:
it's basically a klicky swap. If you enter, you'll get assigned to another member. According to his/her interests, you can make something personal. (Usually a clicky) You have to send your personalised present to that member before a certain date. In the meantime, someone has made something for you according to your interests, and has sent his/her package to you.
Both the present itself and the member who has sent it will remain a surprise until it arrives. Usually people then post images of the present they received, which might involve a story of arrival for example.

Sounds very interesting. I like it!
(Don't count me in quite yet!) :)
-
If there's more interest, a list of participants could be generated. :)
From former experience what is a minimum of participants and how to obtain an even number?
-
Done it before, and loved it.Count me in. :)
-
I would like to add as I forgot to say, "Count me in!" ;D

Somebody will need to volunteer to organize this. I'm not in it, as I don't even celebrate Christmas. So someone who has the time will have to take charge.
-
bb: We don't celebrate Christmas either, and neither do many other pf-ers all over the world. Maybe we should change the name of this to something besides Secret Santa?
Cheers, Pgal
-
That is an idea, especially since it might take place in March or so. If it were not holiday-associated, I might be interested in being involved.
-
well.. here that kind of "game" is called "Invisible friend".... so maybe we can call this "Secret Friend project", "Secret Playmofriend Project"?
Does someone voluntier to organise it, set the rules, start it etc?
-
-- dead silence --

I've run one of these before and it's not too difficult. It requires the organizer to have the home addresses of all participating people, so it must be someone trustworthy. People submit their preferences and shipping info to the organizer and then it's just a matter of matching people up.
Questions to be considered:
Is this focusing on just customized figures?
Is it for adult collectors only, or can families with children participate? That means families would be matched with other families or more than one single collector and each person in the family group participating gets a klicky. The family would be expected to send out as many klickies as they take in.
-
ok...let's do something before going on.
Can someone explain in detail how this works and what is it about for those who doesn't know. :) And then we can go from there.
-
Sure.
This has been done at a couple of different forums over the years. I know I did it at Playmoboard at least twice, once at LG and I believe we did it once here as well.
What has typically happened in the past:
If you want to participate you send your favorite one or two themes along with your shipping info to the organizer. The organizer matches up people with similar theme interests and send you back the name of another participant with their theme and info.
You then make up a custom klicky matching their interests and mail it to them by the deadline.
After the deadline date has passed people who have received their Klicky usually post a thread about it showing the klicky, sometimes with a story of it's arrival and addition to their collection.
So you send out a gift and receive one back from someone else. People are not usually matched directly - the person you send to will not be the person you receive from.
I've gotten and sent some great klickies through this sort of project. As an example one year my match was Count Bogro. So I found out what city he lives in/near and looked up the coat of arms for that city. I then made him a city guard with that heraldry on it. A year or two later Count Bogro had me as his match and he sent me an accordian player with a monkey. Other years I've received an Alien Queen, Thai baby elephant with blanket and boy, knights, and St Francis of Assisi. It can turn out to be all sorts of different things and often made especially for you to fit into your interests and known collection.

It is great fun and I'd love to participate.
I nominate Tim as the coordinator. ;D
- trustworthy
- experienced
- witty (maybe not a requirement of the task but an excellent attribute none the less)
I'll be his campaign manager.
-
Tim would be fine with me, as long as he isn't too busy to spend the time on all this? Obviously the coordinator has to be someone we all trust to give our addresses to, and I'd say we can trust him! ;)
-
I would suggest a few changes of you are interested guys. :)
-
What do you have in mind?
-
That sounds cool......but do they have to be customized? I am not a good customizer and still want to share the festive spirit!
-
What do you have in mind?
well I was thinking maybe the sorting of the pairs could be done like in a riffle, you know? instead of someone pairing compatible people up.
That would make it a little more challenging for you would have to make a little research about the person you have to send the clicky to, to know what kind of collection they have etc.
Other thing is I think all clickies should be customized to make them unique or as unique as possible. I don't mean making new parts for them, but swapping is customizing so...
-
Yes, getting matched up with someone who has different interests is a great idea since you'll have to work with a (completely) different theme than you're used to. Another point of discussion is whether people should be matched according to geographical location? (Some prefer this to save on shipping costs, although it limits the possibilities...)
Customising can be broad; from painting to stickers to swapping parts to swapping accesoires, ... Do what you're comfortable with.
I'd offer to volunteer for the organisation, but I don't know if you're comfortable with sending me your adresses. If this would be the case however, it would have to wait until after my exams, somewhere in the beginning of February.

I would be interested in the adult version and I am sure our 3 sons would swap with other kids as well. Actually it would be a great lesson for them to do it
-
I would love to be part of this and Im happy to swap with adults or any kids out there:)
Best wishes
