Title: Hoplita Minotaur ?
Post by: Malone on November 06, 2011, 03:27:29
Hi boys !!!!
This time I make a new helmet early type corintian....the model is very simple but I see one version with a big horns and I think on..... Crete, King Minos, Minotaur....way no??

I think this is a new image of the typical Greek soldier and I make the helmet....also I think this is good for Gladiator World....do you think???

Hey Javi!
You didn't tell me there were two! I like both of course. I'd like to see an arena with all your custom gladiators fighting!
Best,
Arnaud

That is a most interesting helmet!! Its certainly early corintian, but I've never seen any such horns on greek helmet... Homer does discribe in Iliad greeks wearing small horns, usually of animal teeth, like boar tusks, on the helmets but these were placed on the forehead... And minoan helmets looked nothing like that.. they had bigger openings in the face and either covered by boar tusks or had just a small horn on the forehead.... Its possible that these horns on the helmet you show us were added a lot later... Maybe, as you speculated very good, to create a gladiator helmet. I'd be interested to learn where this was found and where its located now.

And your work is awesome!!!  :)9 Probably best to use it just for a gladiator though, or a fantasy like greek setting because there are no accounts of such helmets, although new stuff are constantly found and bring new light to arcaelogical research...

@ Cowabounga.....I make the silver helmet 2 years ago, is inspired on Gladiator Film but I never sell this because my Gladiator Set is more big and I think on make a 2º Gladiator Set with classic helmets.....maybe on this 2º Set I put this helmet.

@ Wolf Knigth.....The page on I found this images dont work....??.... :'(
I remember read this helmet was found on Italy and Dalmatian coast.
I make a new search and I found one on Christie´s

This helmet is not a fantasy....but make me dream on Minotaur....and Playmobil is a toy.

Great Custom Malone!!

Historically maybe this helmet exists but practical this helmet it would be only for decoration purposes. It will be extremely difficult to use this helmet in battle even for ancient greeks!!

aahhh...but the samurai's horns are made of wood or cardboard and not for goring their enemies nor for getting themselves a stiff neck

Spot on, Cheng! That's what I told Javi. These Corithians must've had really strong neck!
BTW, they're starting an expo at a Museum in Paris about the samurais and their armors. I'll go take some pics…

I would like to learn more about it, but as I said, the horns may were added later, or as Angelo suggest, might be used for ceremonial purposes.

Is not easy to find information about this helmet.
On this forum talk about and show one new image.

Your absolutely right and I love yout customs and enjoy them a lot, but besides I love being an amateur archeologist so the history of the helmet you posted interest me equally a lot. On the other hand, you're right this is the playmoforum not the archeological one.

You misunderstood. We like your custom  :)9. And we dont care in what context you use it, we love see it used in any context.

But, we are also interested in the real thing (the helmet that inspired you) and where it comes from, what is its history, how it was created. Maybe not the theme of this thread, and out of topic surely, so thank you for the information, we won't ask anything else on it, as what matters here is your custom and that you were inspired by that real helmet. Now excuse us, we'll go look for the historical background of the real helmet as an archaeological artifact  ;D ;D ;D
