Title: Suggesting Specials
Post by: tonguello on September 22, 2011, 15:27:22
I've seen lately that many people is not very happy with the last Specials that have been out.
Being SPECIALS one of my main themes I have to say I like them and collect them all.

But.... why don't we suggest Geobra, here in this thread, what figure we think would make a nice Special?

It would be better if we all can illustrate our ideas with pictures (customs or grafis) of what our suggestion would look like.

Anyone on board??  :)

:) i am glad you started up this thread tonguello.
when i first thought on suggesting sylvia this brainstorming section i was hoping that a lot of us would find it a good idea.
it is having a slower start than i imagined but i am confident that this means that things will go slowly but surely.

;D if we all look at the new 2012 olympic releases we can see how some of our ideas can get done - i am sorry but i can't recall whom between us had this idea (using the winter olympics bach then).

:-[ i confess i don't have a lot of ideas about new specials.
i have a strategy though - going for figures that are easy to recognize and don't need to pay royalties.
if geobra doesn't call them by their names it will be easier.
robin hood is a good example of this just released.

zorro could be another one.
and a double-blister with ahab and moby-dick (maybe even adding queequeg).
and even a captain aubrey and doctor maturin double blister.

;) anyhow, if geobra looks on the forthcoming movies that we can bet will be box-office successes (we just have look at the director and actors names) and uses the time close to their release to also release new similar-themed special they can make a lot of money.

:hmm: to use the classics...
gulliver (lilliput)
alice (in wonderland, with a rabbit and the cheshire cat) - to late for tim burton's success
frankenstein
dr. jekill and mr. hide
notre-dame's hunchbak

 but the ones i would really love to see made (forgetting the strategy i proposed) are the characters from the wizard of oz.
dorothy with ruby slippers, toto (a new dog mould), the wicked witches, the good witch, oz, the scarecrow, the tin-man, the cowardly lion...
... and the yellow brick road with a piece of the emerald city (o.k. this would have to be a bigger set, not a special).

a literature series would be amazing... there is plenty of material out there... they could even do the little playmo story books with them ... like the ones in the noah's ark and the nativity sets

well.. I have some ideas I will present on time.
Ironically one was the geisha I made last year but i just learnt one of the new fi?urs is a geisha... I wonder if they are really listening  :)
anyway... I have ideas I have never heard of or seen before (like the geisha) so if in 2013 we see them done... you should thank me.

just kidding, but I hope they are watching.  :)

most historical figures are also fair game are they not?

I could sure use a Benjamin Franklin klicky... complete with a kite and bald head with long hair on the sides... classy :)

I dream of new, modern Hispanic, African, and Asian families/couples as Specials so we can get more variety of ethnic people doing normal things. Playing cards, musical instruments, tennis, golf, frisbee, volleyball, soccer together or swimming, skiing, bowling, walking/jogging, biking, gardening, shopping, driving cool cars, and just enjoying life together.

If these figures could be easily taken apart like the collectibles, that would be a huge plus because I am very tired of damaging and breaking their parts while taking them apart.

And on these figures could we get some new hair colors with more shades of gray, blonde  and red along with newer hair styles including Afros and curlier hair? Cheers, Pgal

personally i would like PM to switch all new figures to the mystery figures design.. so that they were all interchangeable.. I think that would do more to increase appeal to kids than these weird colors will

Working on a few ideas... will post, but should we put them here or should we make a thread over in the customs for the embodiment of ideas presented here?

Hubby and I were just brainstorming about famous women, and came up with a few candidates for PM Specials.

-Joan of Arc
-Helen Keller
-Anne Frank
-Betsy Ross
-Indira Gandhi
-Pocahontas
-Mother Teresa
-Madame Curie
-Maureen Connolly Brinker
-Beverly Sills
-Elizabeth Taylor
-Jackie Kennedy
-Margaret Thatcher

We are assuming that they cannot be alive due to licensing restrictions. Is that correct?
Cheers, Pgal

Margaret Thatcher is a joke, right?  :D
There are at least three women I don't know in your list. Helen Keller? Is that the girl that was born deaf, blind and mute? Can you tell who MCB and BS are, please? Sorry if I look like a caveman not knowing about these people…

Title: Re: Suggesting Specials

Yeah - sorry. I realised afterwards.

 :)

The best specials - for me - are those that are somewhat 'peripheral' to a theme. For example - the native scout in the western series, or the executioner in the medieval series ... or something like that.

We have too many knights: every new wave of specials brings us yet another tired knight (I see that we have more of the same zzzz in 2012). Why don't they give us civilian specials, for eg? We have been crying for those for a long long time.

Another example which springs to mind was the gladiator special of some years back. There were already 4 or 5 gladiators in the arena set, so the special one was redundant. Would have been much better to give us a Roman civilian as a special. See what I mean?

Bolingbroke there are already three crusader Specials! Ain't that enough???
And I disagree with you about new knights, read below. Never enough knights, I say!

OK, my turn! I want an ancient Greece Special! Or maybe two: one Spartan and one Trojan. Oh! And a Normand fighter too! Like this one: http://genealogie.demeautis.free.fr/ressources_images/ressource_106/soldat_normand.gif
And any new knight with a new helmet, too (with crest, if possible).
Sorry, it's a wishlist here, right?

I wouldn't mind it if PM employed you to design their new knights, Arnaud. But with the stuff we've been getting in the past few years, Id rather have something else.

Re crusaders, yes. Theyve given us three crusaders and they havent got a single one right  ::) ::) ::)
Title: Re: Suggesting Specials

Hi Arnaud!
Looks like a pushed a button and got you rolling with Margaret Thatcher!!!! I am trying to find some famous women who are dead, and it ain't easy! Please nominate some women that come to your mind as you are more familiar with European historical ladies than I because Texas history was required where I grew up. I would nominate a series of famous US Presidents, but that would still leave out all women and the rest of the world...not a good plan!

One of the many reasons that PM are so unknown in the US is that they offer so little to attract adult women, who select most of the toys purchased here. If PM wants to increase it sales, it needs to produce some historical figures that most women can relate to, and this definitely does not include more knights, soldiers, cowboys, spacemen, firemen, policemen, etc. which are all male dominated. I am not saying that PM should not offer these male specials, rather that they should give the female market more FEMALES!

So maybe we can all brainstorm here and come up with some famous women who are well enough known that  they will catch the eyes of women everywhere. Maureen Connolly Brinker was the most famous US tennis player for many years. Don't think we could get away with a Martina Navratilova, the Williams sisters, or any of the Belgian or Russian superstars (Sharapova, etc.) yet because...yup....they are still breathing.

Beverly Sills was a famous US opera singer; maybe Maria Callas would be appropriate for Europe. As a woman I would buy an Andrea Bocelli or Josh Groban, but alas they are still living and might not like PM making moola off their bodies. Although he looked dead the last time I saw him perform in Paris about ten years ago, Julio Iglesias has not kicked the dust yet either. Women also like Rod Stewart, and numerous other rock stars, but probably would not approve of our knocking them off prematurely just so we could get our fix of figures.

Scientists could include Galileo, Newton, and Einstein...all men except for Madame Curie. And then all of the famous artists, which basically are men. Here we go again...Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, the Breugels, Rubens, Wyeths, Warhol, Bierstadt, Winslow Homer, ...  Cassatt does star as the woman painter who is well known.  Also maybe Camille Claudet.

Then we come to musicians...including composers such as Beethoven, Bach, Dvorak, Mozart, Stravinsky, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Sibelius, Rachmaninof, etc.  And then the performers, Pavarotti, the dead Beatles,  Michael $$$$$ Jackson, Jim Morrison, Barry White, the FEMALES Janis Joplin, Shirley Bassey, Diana Ross, Etta James, except the last three are still alive.

Would some of these living people consent to a PM figure and forego any royalties, or would PM not consider them at all? Oh I forgot Yo Yo Ma, who is at the top of my list, and is well known in many countries. While Fournier and Rostropovich (saw him conduct Fournier in London in the 80's...WOW!) would also be cool figures, doubt that younger folks would know who they were.

Anyway we some some nominations for famous females...help, help, help, Pgal
Title: Re: Suggesting Specials

The problem with some of those famous women, pgal, is that they aren't necessarily readily recognizable people that kids will relate to and immediately see the resemblance. or adults for that matter. How do you make a helen keller special? How will anyone know that's who she is, she'll just look like a random woman.

I'd love to see a scottish special in a kilt, with bagpipes.

Or how about a native america woman? or child? We haven't had any of those in a while.

A cowgirl would be nice, too.

Or an australian aboriginee with a didgeridoo.

What about a french maid?

Yes, I'm not veru keen on seeing famous people become klickies... that takes away the magic...

But with Elvis... now thats another thing  ;D

I agree with bb, a scot wearing a kilt would be awesome!!! Australian aboriginee is also a great idea!!!

Mayan, Inkan, Angient Greek specials would be very welcome  ;D
Title: Re: Suggesting Specials
Post by: playmogal on September 23, 2011, 13:39:48
bb: Those are great suggestions! The kilt sounds wonderful! And the aborigines...maybe a family of them?

You are correct that Helen Keller would be a tough one...maybe a grandma with a shawl and white cane and a Braille book. It may take a little note on the side of the box telling who the figure is. Why not teach a little history with these specials? Most folks in the US would not know Albrecht Durer either, but he makes a wonderful special and is one of my favorite artists.

I forgot to add Ray Charles, who would need a suit, sunglasses, and a black piano. And Louis Armstrong with his trumpet. How well would a Mick Jagger with painted on large lips do?

I think an Itzhak Perlman in a chair/on a stool with his violin and a cane would be a winner, too. Joshua Bell could do well also with a violin and a dress shirt he likes to perform in, but he needs bendable arms and legs, another whole matter, because he dances while playing the violin in front of the orchestra. Hard to judge the market for these guys...also a Leonard Bernstein (Ricardo Muti/Zubin Mehta) with a baton and music sheets on a stand on a podium.

These are just some brainstorming ideas meant to get folks thinking out of the ordinary themes. And if you want to get into the religious possibilities, we certainly could use several Buddhas (both large and small stomach versions and various colors depending on the country) with the accompanying bald monks in saffron robes. The Dalai Lama may be too controversial for a German company...not sure about that, and he certainly would not work in mainland China!

Tennis fans would love a tennis racket and ball holding Federer, Nadal and/or Djokovic, who might need taller legs than the other two. Borg, Mc Enroe, Sampras, Agassi, Graf, and Everts also come to mind.

Anyway this is a fun thread promoting creativity and laughs, Pgal

I like the idea of a cowgirl. We've had cowgirls in the past - but not enough. Certainly not as many cowgirls as there are female pirates for eg. Same goes for Indian women. I think PM should try to maximise the potential of 'unisex' themes this way. That way, a western theme wouldnt be exclusive to boys but would also interest girls.

I really like the idea of a highlander and hoplite. Aztecs or Mayans would also be great and generally some more non-European figures (Zulu, Aborigines, Persian etc). Oh and a matador, I'd love to see a matador in our Arena . . .
Title: Re: Suggesting Specials
Post by: bonniebeth on September 23, 2011, 14:39:08
ooooh, a matador might be controversial, but it would be cool.

Ray Charles would be cool, but again, a lot of kids would have no clue who he is. I don't think we'll ever have a huge number of historical figures for that reason. We may see a very occassional one, like the Durer figure, but I don't think they'll be in the regular specials line.

I'd like to see them use old knight factions for specials. To the kids it would just be new knights and soldiers, while to the older generations it would be a very valuable expansion for the stuff they have.

Kind of a classic line of specials that reissue old figures as specials which used to be part of bigger sets.

Suggestions for that:

-Dragon soldier. (the faction with the yellow dragon and purple cloth)
It could be a soldier like the one that came with the dragon knight. Only he could have both a crossbow and a sword.

-Fleur de lis guard. (blue/red color scheme)
Equipped with a spear and a faction shield, he could come with a treasure chest and some gold because the figure itself is quite basic.

-Swan squire.
The one that came with the tent. He could have a flag and a chest containing several items a squire might carry
for his master such as a mug, piece of bread, morningstar and a parchment.

-Tower archer.
Equipped with a bow, longsword and torch.

Aside from these classics, I also have some new suggestions for specials:

-Merchant.
Compatible with the pirate theme, this well dressed merchant could come with a chest of coins and a cane.

-Teutonic knight.
Complete with horned helmet, longsword, shield, long surcoat and a menacing morningstar or axe.

-Harp player.
A clickie with a stool and a harp. Could be a classical greek/roman.

-Violin player.
A clickie in a suit with a violin and violin case. (for funny misunderstandings with mobsters.)

-Mechanic.
Complete with toolbox and a full assortment of tools.

-Janissary.
Complete with mustache, traditional headwear, curved sword and either a longbow or musket.

-Woad warrior.
Covered in woad paint, bare chested and armed with an axe and decorated round shield, maybe a belt with sword
to compensate for a lack of other accesoires.

-Druid.
Dressed in a green robe and walking stick that has a bird sitting on it, and with a wolf at his/her side.

-Minstrel.
Colorfull medieval fellow with a lute and a paper to recite poetry from.

-Goldseeker.
Cowboy with a shovel, pick axe and two gold pieces.

-Businessman.
A guy in a suit with a briefcase and laptop.

More to come another time, its getting late now and I need my sleep.

I like that idea! Rather than all the boring knights they come out with, why not something the collectors can use for expanding their armies? Kids won't know it's an old rerun.

Because they are easily found (and cheap) on ebay. Fleur de lys knights etc go for around 2 euro each, which is a very decent price for a klicky.

I really like the idea of a janissary however.

I doubt they will do any middle east theme. Is too political correct for these cultures. Look how quickly playmobil stopped producing the arab warrior. And the Janissary especially will not be welcome by many sides, especially from christian societies. Remember, the janissary corps were formed off recruited boys, from Christian families and doctrinated into the Ottoman faith and army. I wont go in more details and I dont want to start a debate here, either religious, political or historical, but its best to avoid the creation of such specials.

I think they would be fine making middle-eastern specials... if they simply used the regular smiling faces.. no frills.. just big smiles  ;D but since they insist of weird eyebrows and stubble and stuff when making them... yeah they could be perceived as the Playmo bad guys... and as we have been told there are no playmo "bad guys" .... oh wait now there are robo GANG anyone

I agree its a great klicky, but cant seem to be able to find it anywhere any more... I have not looked for it lately on ebay to tell the truth :-\
Maybe if they keep their vaque designs, playmobil can produce middle east klickies after all.. like the egyptian graverobbers...

Provided they are now coming in Special Plus, more accessories would be included in one box. Though in the down side, more redundant parts would end up in the boxes.

i think the arab warrior is one of the best special in the last few years, not sold anymore, but good thing i got my self 50 before ridgeroadstation closed, and at 2.23 or something like that... the design is different, have a white and gray legs, chainmail neck and head, and the white turban and belt... amazing.... the only thing i didnt like was the arms and the long childish halberd...

i do encourage new specials. with accurate designs, maybe not as a special but more oriented as a educative item, historical, maybe with a small bio on the back...

Here  they can talk about special character or unit... ejemp, an abraham lincoln, joan of arc, brothers wright, etc... or about civilization, aztec, inca, skimos, hindu, persian, etc... could be a good idea... and about the selling techniques.. humm.. encourage the kids learning, but with both intentions as todays specials. to be wanted by parents, kids, and fans...

i do realize playmobil releases a good special before a new serie, like the viking, roman, egyptian, and maybe asian in a soon future... and that's good, but that maybe too careful... and make us fans to suffer on the way...

also i realize playmobil sees on the competence for their new products... like lego or sleich... ad thats good, i love sleich desings (but they dont smile :) ) and we maybe able to see things we like from other companies in a near future, like the archer target for example, on the contrary that same philosophy can ruin some new products and orient them to a lego bright color desings... like some of the new knights and pirate theme...

create a collectors department in each country playmobil have a page, and sell collectors oriented specials, sell them only online, 5000 of each as a prototipe, and them maybe get them in the market...

i just ask to hear as collectors, we'll take care of them!!!

The problem with the Arab warrior - the ONLY problem imo was the white/silver legs. I think they were the only klickies to come with those legs. Almost all of the Arabs I bought, I dismantled to customise my crusaders.  :( :( :(

There actually is an archery target, an archer with archery target can be seen on the german version of the online store. I think its a special or special plus.
Looks nice at least, looking forward to it being for sale here in the Netherlands.

As promised, here's some more suggestions:

-Barmaid.
Medieval gal in corset with a wooden mug, pitcher and a stool.

-Amazon.
Based on greek mythology, a female warrior. Might give a nice alternative to pretty princesess for little girls.

-Landsknecht.
Wearing a plate cuircass, puffy sleaves and a wide hat with a feather and armed with a zweihander, this could be a rather interesting clicky.
Could perhaps have a special scabbard on his back for the zweihander.

-Iron maiden with skeleton inside.
Might be controversial, just throwing it out there though.

-Falconeer.
I believe there was such a clickie in a larger hunters set, might make a good special. Just a hunter with his falcon and a bow.

-Mercenary.
Just a common medieval soldier with neutral colors such as grey and brown, and carrying a neutral shield.
Could be used for any faction.

-child on raft.
Kind of a huckleberry fin idea, a child on a little raft.

This is a brilliant idea! What excellent suggestions you guys have come up with already.

how about some figures from mythology - Thor, Medusa etc.

Will need to think - I always seem to log on just as I am heading out to work.

I would love some more realism to the costumes of what ever figures produced - particularly modern - no more silly words on shirts or pictures of teddies etc.

All these love boys / girls, fit , pickup etc etc are just really tacky, cheap and not playmo standards, i do wonder what on earth they were on at their product development     when they agreed to launch these. Hanks Beck would never appropve of that rubbish.  :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

I am really concerned that Specials is getting worse and worse. Looking back at the original launch and how diverse and cool these first sets were and looking at the upcoming ones i think there is a big gap. New ones are excessive design , sometime unrealistic and very temporary if  you like. Playmobil is most definitely keeping up with what the market want and demand and that is fine but that doesnt mean i /we need to like / approve them . Prefer the old ones, much better if you ask me.  :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

I think the best specials are those that can be used with other playmobil themes. Otherwise its just one lonely clicky. Unless you get more than one of the same.

Early specials where definatly the best. I have the nightwatcher of the very first batch twice. Great clicky that can be used for both the medieval and pirate theme.

Well lots of red caps together might be more suitable for a secret society.

Black might also be more associated with the cloth pulled over someones head before they are put under the guillotine. I believe they did often pull a black cloth sack over their head for that.

Along these lines.....how about an "around the world" theme. They could do a national figure for tons of countries.
The bagpiper for Scotland
Beefeater for England
Maybe a leprechaun for Ireland????
I can picture an awesome French guy with a striped shirt and some onions or garlic, and a little beret!!!
We already have Uncle Sam
How about a flamenco dancer for Spain
New series 2 fi?ure is a geisha
The aborigine is great....or a Crocodile Dundee type guy!!
Being so new here I am not as familiar with what has been available in the past so some of these may have been done. Also I know that they are kinda stereotypical and could maybe offend some??

I'd love to see a female clicky in traditional dutch dress with cheese and tullips actually. I think it would look really adorable on a clicky.

So I really don't think it would be offensive to anyone, unless they would do inappropriate stuff like a german nazi soldier, a Dutch slave trader with slave, an Arabian suicide commando, an American Klu-Klux Klan member, English soccer hooligan, etc.

actually, a special plus might be just the right place for the Nuremburg guard to make a comeback... any complaint about the additional cost of shiny armor could be countered with fewer accessories... OR each one could come with the classic cannon

I would prefer sticker myself though... my brother and I initially each used these as our troops... he used the yellow lion with the blue and white stripes... and I used the Nuremburg symbol. It allowed for 2 separate armies to be created and fight each other without getting confused... or course... they could release them in different colors with different symbols as well.... Red with the Nuremburg... Blue with the classic alternate symbol... and Yellow with ... the old unicorn symbol.. then we could build 3 armies..

Red with the Nuremburg... Blue with the classic alternate symbol... and Yellow with ... the old unicorn symbol.. then we could build 3 armies..

yuo have the right mindset, preferences and the best klicky era in mind Baron  ;) ;) ;)

Any specials that can be used for army building are always welcome, I think each batch should always have at least one of those.

When it comes to medieval heralrdy, they somehow insist on always adding more kinds. While the creativity is to be admired, I doubt many would mind old heralrdry being recycled, most would welcome it. Heralrdry is only one part of the character after all, they can do new things with the clothes, hair, weapons, etc.

In the category of sports is there a snooker player??
That can be a nice one too.

No there isn't!

That would be soo cool - or a whole set with snooker table as well!

But you would have an issue with the small balls :-\ Perhaps they could just be one mould in the triangle :)

What issue? We'd need individual balls too! (not that I actually KNOW how to play snooker)

Had to look up what snooker was. I had actually never heard that before... we call it pool. Or billiards, but usually pool. And I love it. I would love to see a playmobil pool snooker table.

same here
but for what I saw in wikipedia it is different from pool or billard, not the same game. Snooker has a kind of marking on the green filter...like a soccer field  :hmm:
Im sure the rules are different too.

Pool is a general term, and refers to several different games on the same table. But it may be slightly different, I don't know.

   you can use the stick for that too, ofcourse.

Nice thing about the klicky.....if that one has black hair he looks exactly like Ronnie "The Rocket" O'Sullivan, who's a great snooker player.

BTW Rules between snooker and pool are completely different, just as the color of the balls, the size of the balls, the size of the table.

Pool in the UK is a game in it's own right, where players pot spotted and stripped balls in turn

Normally played on a blue table, or usually just on a regular green snooker table if not

Sorry, we're going off topic :-[

A bit off topic, but do any of you think that PM is going to discontinue the Special line? I see no new specials for 2012...
Title: Re: Suggesting Specials
Post by: Baron Marshall on October 12, 2011, 23:55:49
yes I think the Special line is done, but will be replaced by the Special Plus until that line runs its course... but I think most of what we are discussing could easily be incorporated into either the Special Plus or the Fi?ures, which are the heir apparent to the Specials.
Title: Re: Suggesting Specials
Post by: PlaymoMan on October 12, 2011, 23:57:44
Yeah, that's my thought, also. I am not really happy with the Fi?ures line, though. :(
Title: Re: Suggesting Specials
Post by: Baron Marshall on October 13, 2011, 00:03:51
On one hand, they do have limitations, but on the other hand... the Specials weren't really that special anymore anyway... and the Fi?ures do allow Playmo to introduce a lot of parts and sets with limited markets on their own, as the mystery aspect of the line will ensure that they don't get stuck with a bunch of unsold weird figures nobody wants... on the other hand, the stores  will get stuck with a LOT of less desirable characters... but again on the other hand... at least so far... they have a wide variety in the Fi?ures...

Yes, I suppose the one on the left is very complicated, I'm not too keen on that anyway, but the one on the right could use printing for a lot of the detal. However I'd settle for a set like these to make up a pipe band...

special plus does seem to allow for more, and the cost is not that much more it seems.

Regarding scots.. they would need to find a good way to make kilts or any kind of skirts. Maybe a mold for the legs that shows bare legs/different legs from the knees down or such? might be a rather thin skirt though, but it would also open up the ability to make greeks. Problem would be putting them on a horse.

Title: Re: Suggesting Specials

They could use the knight legs for mounted Scots... and the cavewoman skirts could be easily converted into kilts... if they make some boots that plugged in there.

Yes, it's true. They could easily make some of these, and sell them as souvenirs at the Vatican. I am also still lobbying for a Knight of St John, c. 1565 ... with a plumed helmet, arquebus etc. They could phase the old (and somewhat boring) grandmaster out now, and have that instead.

Do you have spare Sheriffs you can dismantle and use for customs? Did you find it in an ebay lot? Did you order it thru DS?

The black and yellow chested klicky indeed comes from the 4440 "Take along castle", the part nr. is 30 00 3982.
The red feather I ordered (about 50 of them, lol!) through DS, the part nr. is 30 09 2420.

About the figure:when I ordered mine (20) about a year ago, the lady at DS told me they were almost gone, so if you would like to order them, you better move quickly! :)
