Title: playmobil vs. clothespins
Post by: cachalote on September 15, 2011, 16:16:53
:) i recently discovered this image of an american playmo-add from 1977.
:hmm: do you think this clothespins were also available in europe back then.
:hmm: could it be that they were the inspiraton behind hans beck's initial design?

I know that Hans Beck used to make little people out of wood before Geobra went looking for him. That was actually the reason they looked him up and asked him to work for them and design the klicky... but if that cloth pin was his design I have no clue.

i need to test and see if the klickys work as well or better than clothes pins... they'd be so cute

Maybe it is what little kids did back then.
My sister does it now, just for fun. ???

probably to remind you that only lame people from 1947 don't use modern band-aids and still play with clothespins instead of cool cutting edge plastic figures :)

But seriously I think its supposed to be a "wave of the future" kind of thing...

I don't think so. It must have something to do with what's written in the articule. Probablu we won't know.  :(

Maybe it's about the use of plastics.... toys made of plastic instead of wood, and plastic bandaids instead of fabric bandages.

Yep. Band-aids are a modern invention.

That's one of those modern inventions we totally take for granted and never think of as "technology". It's hard to imagine life before band-aids!

Yep. Just like before PM: children had to play with clothespins!!  :o
Imagine us collecting clothespins... :hmm:

-Have you seen the new style clothes pin coming out? :o

-Yeah, I really wish they would make black clothes pins though, for racial diversity.

-What about blue ones for avatar?

-Wouldn't it be cool if we could buy boxes with pins for guns?

-And have you noticed the quality of the wood they are using seems to be going down?

-Yes, and the paint colors are too bright, too many primary colors, especially on the US clothespins!

-Can anyone help me get the USA exclusive pirate clothespin?

-Anyone know how to disassemble the new swimsuit clothespins?

I already do!  We call them peg dolls here.
I make peg doll kits and sell them at my craft fairs.

Interesting indeed and after all, most success stories have started from a simple idea  ;)

The idea of making figures from clothes pins or clothes pegs goes back to at least the late 19th century, so if they did influence Hans Beck (and as someone who made toys from wood he was probably familiar with the idea) it was long before the American Clothespins appeared.

I agree totally with Gordon.

This is probably OT, but this thread takes me back to "Ding Dong School" with Miss Frances.  She had a TV show back in the 50's.  She always showed how to make simple toys.  Many of my favorite "toys" were homemade with things that were easily found around the house.  I had a great time with a pilot I made out of a clothes pin.  He had a parachute made out of a linen handkerchief.  I got a lot of exercise throwing him up in the air and then running to catch him before he hit the ground.

I have a small collection of corn-husk dolls, one of which I made myself. They're really cute. I also had paper dolls as a kid. Sometimes the simplest toys are great. Kids used to play with a corn cob wrapped in a blanket as a baby doll. And then of course, there are always rag dolls.
