Title: spyware attack
Post by: cachalote on September 03, 2011, 12:27:01
:hmm: for the last 2 days whenever i typed playmofriends adress i got another site trying to open.
:omg: this other intruding adress was blocked by avast and classified as a spyware.
maybe this problem has to do just with me but maybe it has to do with playmofriends - i don't know.
anyway, i thought you should know.
 :) the problem stopped today.

Hm... I hadn't noticed anything particularly in connection with PF, but I did get a trojan the other day that was forced out by my anti-virus, and I was on PF at the time.

Walter (walts-trains) 'phoned me last night to ask if I was having problems accessing PF.  I wasn't, but he explained that whenever he tried to get on PF, whether using a bookmark or typing in the web address, he was redirected to a site supposedly offering anti-spyware and which claimed his computer had 30 infections and that he should download software from the site to deal with this.  (Which he very wisely didn't!)

Yes, my mom has made the mistake of clicking on one of those things before and it was not pretty! Actually, yesterday morning I couldn't get on, but it didn't redirect me anywhere, I just couldn't get on at all.

Some idiots hacked the home page (http://www.playmofriends.com). >:(

I didn't know about it until someone told me yesterday because I only use a bookmark of the forum index page (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/) to visit the forum. So far they never managed to tamper with that one.

I uploaded a fresh version of the home page last night and it has fixed the problem... for now, anyway.

Yeah I use a bookmark for the forum index too, so I guess that's why I didn't have problems.

I did change it quite recently to something very random, but it's a good suggestion to do so again. :)
I also ticked something called "enhanced security" at the webhost which I didn't notice was there before. :crossed:

I assume they make money out of it. The link they had implanted was an attempt to fool people into believing they needed to buy an anti-virus program.

The other night every time I tried to use the bookmark or type in the address to the browser I ended up with the spyware page.
I then removed the bookmark and came of the internet.
I then removed all my history, cookers ect and shut down the computer.
On restarting and going on to the internet I typed in the forum address and it worked O.K and then saved it as a new bookmark.
Since then it as been O.K. so far.
