Title: Union Army
Post by: Wolf Knight on August 24, 2011, 10:33:44

Appologies to Confederate lovers, I will build a Confederate army the following year, but since for the Athens Funpark diorama we arranged with George that he will build the Confederate force and I the Union, here is the result of my work.

Cavalry:

And leaders:
I have given them no names but I have a lieutenant general, a colonel, and a lieutenant... followed by flag bearers a sergeant, since the cavalry is only 50 mounted men, and a bugle corporal

Many thanks to Gordon (playmofire) for helping me by getting on my behalf the additional 30 cavalry hats I needed form UK DS.

This is spectacular, Panos.  What a wonderful display of your collection!  It must have taken you forever to line them up, one false move and you would wipe out the whole infantry!  :o

Impressive to say the least! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/luwerner/gif/notworthy.gif)
In the past I was very into old western Calvary, but nowadays I'm making a point of steering clear of the theme :-[. But that looks fantastic! I would love to see your army facing George's Confederates :**:.

I do not know why, maybe the same hats, hankies, face, etc but to me it looks like a clone army.

Perhaps after a few battle scars they will look less cloned like

Hairs.
Just changing hairs and using different types and colors makes a HUGE difference. I did that the Legion X and the difference is very worth the trouble, no more clone army.

I did not take too long to set up Joe, the line up is not to straight anyway, but I did have a couple of ''domino effects''..

Really impressive, Panos! I hope in the diorama they'll be displayed realistically and not just lined up like for a review! (Don't misread me, I think these pictures are fine to present this big army. Just too "organised" for a battlefield!)

By the way, I always wondered: is it accurate that every footman in the Union was equipped with a rifle and a handgun? I mean, it seems a bit expensive as an equipment for mere "canon fodder", doesn't it?
Just asking. Any spaecialist here? Elric maybe? Wesley?

Best, Arnaud

I believe some were equiped with relics from the war with Mexico.. Many men bought their own handgun..

Arnaud, good points! for the handguns, as tahra said, some were carrying their own guns, but I think a small sword was standard issue for the uniform.

As for the diorama, of course they will be displayed on various postures, althoug I doubt they will be all of them in the diorama as we ar going to exhibit a lot of other sets as well.

And don't forget that for both sides (especially for the south) uniforms were uniforms in the beginning, all nice and shiny. Even the horses matched in some regiments (the Black Horse)... After some time, any horse or mule would do (having to travel farther and farther away to get ANY replacement mount), and same with uniforms and weapons.

And it's authentic.  American Civil War artillery men were identified by a red neckerchief and usually, too, a red top to their cap.

Impressive regiments! 100 infantry-men if I counted right?
I hope to see them engaged in some battle-scenes soon  :)

As for the weapons, Yankee (Union) infantry usually carried a rifle (frontloader) and a bajonet. Cavalrists a sabre and a rifle.
Officers - infantry or cavalry- a sabre and (a) pistol(s).
The Confederates were more unorganised in uniforms and weapons. When not mistaking, I believe it were these Southern folks who still had weapons from the Mexican wars.

A very impressive display, Panos, and I'm glad I could help you.

Do you need to buy Confederates, btw?  Can't you just defeat George's army and take them all prisoner?

Knowing George's appetite for quantities... won't the battle be decided in favour of the Confederates within 5 minutes?  :uhoh:

Great looking army Panos!  Even though I'm a southerner, I do like what you got.  Most enlisted did not have handguns.  Of course, some brought their own.  You could use the holster for the enlisted to hold their bayonet or a knife when marching.  They usually did not fix bayonets until late in battle if the enemy was close enough.  Only ideas, they look good as they are!

I like 'cloned' and shining new union troops too....beautiful, just beautiful!

..later on, I started to make sure none of them had the same combination hair/face/beard (I dont have 100 of each unit  :P) and there are different calvary hats in the same colour...

...no hurry WK, enjoy your spic and span union army...after the confrontation with George's confederates, you can start to add donkeys and those arm/leg bandages  ;D (I'm looking forward to seeing George's Southerners....mine have almost 'spic and span' infantry, calvary and artillery units but I have a scruffy volunteer/militia unit too, and these will be the most interesting ones to see...I hope George made these too  ;)

and I enjoyed reading all our PFs' comments regarding their weapons and colours! never stop learning & improving

IMO, if George only has 3-4 guns (which I doubt. This is George!), then Panos' artillery will make the difference. Unless George's Rebs can run very fast!

And it's authentic.  American Civil War artillery men were identified by a red neckerchief and usually, too, a red top to their cap.

And have you noticed the light blue collars and cuffs on the infantry?  ;)

I tried painting the caps too, light blue for the infantry and red for the artillery but I so baat apinting details, stayin in the lines, even using duck tape  :( :-[

A very impressive display, Panos, and I'm glad I could help you.

Thank you Gordon!!! Once again!!

I will need confederates but later this year. the funpark here still has them, but if by the time I need them they dont have them anymore, I'll let you know. Although George's prisoners is a tempting idea  ;D

Yeap 100 infanrty men, 50 cavalry, 10 cannons (although I have more  ;D ), 20 artillery men
Thank you for the specifics Erwin!!!

we shall see...

Thanks for your feedback cheng!! As you said, not easy to make 150 different combinations on such an army, so let it be a cloned one  ;D as for the hats, thats the only tan stetson hat DS had available, otherwise I asked for different ones and non were availble and they could only send me 20 of these, that why I asked Gordon for 30 more of them.

I wish playmobil could produce a belt that it could hold both a sabre and a  handgun.... I have only sabres on the cavalry men, as it was meant to be, but the officers need a hand gun... I tried many combinations with using various gunbelts but everything came out looking so funny...

...

Painting those hats are hard... and the paint will eventually wear off from the top.
A tip, take off the sticker before painting.  :)
