Title: Play(mobil) Room...
Post by: psychdrk on July 15, 2011, 23:24:42
So, I finally found a day where my toys were picked up and and I had a moment to breathe  and I took pics!  :camera:

Here's the wall'o'toys:

I would prefer to have completely separate toy room and therapy room, but not so in this office, so I have to try to divide my one room into 2 distinct areas.
Since I work in a hospital, my toys get sanitized after each session, and my kiddos know that picking up does not mean putting away, but piling on the table, for me to clean and put all the toys away later...

The sign of a successful day:

There was the top row... now the second row...  :-[ in which you may notice a few happy meal toys or other assorted finds that are just too good to not have in the mix  :-[

So, at top there are the buildings that take up too much real estate to be down at eye-level with the kiddos... Then I have the birds and flying creatures, as well as the magical/mythical beings up higher.

Now the next row-- all the regular beings: humans and animals (domestic and wild)

WOW!!! :o Kids must love coming to your office! That looks like so much fun! I see all kinds of stuff in there. One thing that caught my eye was the way you had the snow baseplate on top of the baseplate with the little stream, so it looks like a snow-capped mountain and a mountain stream. Really creative and cool!

BB: I hadn't looked at it that way!  :) I happened to put a couple of books under the snow set to give it height and allow another set room on the shelf, but now I look at it and see I did something kinda cool!

 Yeah, I was kind of wondering if it was on purpose or not, but anyway, it looks cool! So, how do you use the playmobil?

That's a very extensive collection and with an interesting use.  Thanks for sharing it with us.

I, too, noticed the snow bridge and thought how good it looked.

rhanks for sharing your collection through these pics? It would be really interesting to see their use with by your ''patients''. Do you use a different theme for a different approach, or just go along as the kids choose their theme?

I usually start the hour by asking the kiddo simply, "What would you like to do today?" and we go from there.
I'll offer prompts with the toys, like, I'd like them to tell me a story of what's going on, or I may act like an on-the-scene news reporter interviewing them about the action/story. But it's pretty unstructured and non-demanding.
Often, I sit back and see what they do, with just the toys at their disposal and the therapeutic, safe environment. It can be jaw-dropping!

Yes, that sounds to me like it could be very effective, as far as really getting inside the mind. I find it quite interesting, I'd love to hear more!

The Association for Play Therapy explains play therapy this way:
"Therapists strategically utilize play therapy to help children express what is troubling them when they do not have the verbal language to express their thoughts and feelings (Gil, 1991). In play therapy, toys are like the child's words and play is the child's language (Landreth, 2002). Through play, therapists may help children learn more adaptive behaviors when there are emotional or social skills deficits (Pedro-Carroll & Reddy, 2005). The positive relationship that develops between therapist and child during play therapy sessions provides a corrective emotional experience necessary for healing (Moustakas, 1997)."

Thanks for the ideas!  ;D I think I found one that I should have looked at all along:
