Title: Seaside village
Post by: Birdie on July 14, 2011, 11:45:45
Here are some pictures of the village I made a few days ago. It isn't nearly as sophisticated as most of the stuff I've seen on the forum, but I'm new at this + my photography skills are non-existent  :-[

My favourite item has always been the western train station with the sash windows. I used it as a dock here. I think it goes well with the pier I've just purchased
Enjoy

These are some close-ups. I love the qypsy camp my boyfriend made with some of the left-overs ;D
NB. I see the quality of the photos is quite horrible. Is that because I've reduced them to fit 100 KB each? Can I improve that somehow?

This is absolutely lovely! You have so many houses! And i love those new harbor sets. can't wait til we can get those here. Thanks for showing us!

About the pics, you can host them on photo bucket (just create a free account, and then use the bulk uploader; it's much easier than uploading one at a time) and re-size them there which will not mess up the quality at all. Then once you have them re-sized, copy the image code (it will start with IMG) and paste it in your post. Then the pic will be imbedded in the post and a good quality. The size I like to use is 640x480. Hope that helps!

A very pleasant seaside village (or with those large mansions maybe a town) - certainly a great place to stay for a holiday or, better still, to live all the time.

Your photos look OK to me although the first close-up is possibly a bit underexposed which has made it slightly grainy.

A host like photobucket is a good way of posting larger pictures, but don't make them too large, not everyone has fast broadband and large pictures can take an age to show up on a post.

Excellent village. The new harbor sets seem to fit right in. I agree the train station works great as a harbor-side building.
You've combined the vacation house with the modern house sunporch! It looks great! If you would care to post some closer pictures of it some time that would be wonderful.

Thanks a lot for your kind comments, everyone!

If I had a huge table I would definitely put my playmo's on there, because crouching down on the floor, trying to peer into the houses and arrange furniture, isn't as easy now as when I was 10 years old

Anyway, since there has been more bad weather over here, I put some of the advice I got from reading the forum into practice:
- I was really happy to find some felt with the exact same colour as the curtains of the Victorian mansions. I was able to remake the real curtains I lost years ago.  :yippee:
- I went to the garden/hardware center and I found a lot of cheap stuff to make the village look more realistic: small pebbles, sand, straw, soil, even some woolly green carpets that look like freshly mown 'playmobil' lawns.
- There was a roll of wallpaper on sale with a pattern of very small tile-like squares. It's genius   It even has some dolphins in the pattern to match my seaside theme.
- Last but not least, I found some sort of plastic 'paper', black on one side and sandy/grainy on the other side. I have no idea what people use it for in every day life because you could get it in big rolls the size of wallpaper. But it looks exactly like a beach surface. I couldn't believe it!

I'll post some new pictures in a few hours.

@ bonniebeth: Thank you so much for the info on photo bucket. I'm going to try it with the new photo's I make... hope I get it right.

@ Tiermann: I'll make some detailed pictures of the holiday house + sunporch shortly. I was a bit disappointed with the 'new' click-system though. I thought it would be easier to combine all kinds of buildings with it, but the different roofs, hights and lay-outs of each building still limit the set-up to the one on the box basically.
Anyway, I managed to throw things around a bit with the holiday house :)

GORGEOUS, Birdie... Simply stunning.

That beach is indeed perfect! And the "sidewalk too", like portuguese one...

Thank you Tahra  :)

This is a picture of the curtains I made. Since I lost the curtain rods as well, I searched the cupboards and came up with... matches. Apparently, the tip of a match fits neatly in the hole, so I used two matches (cut short) attached together with a piece of wire.
I know the orginal rods look way better, but I don't have a clue where to find those. This works, though  :P

That's really awesome!

The "natural stuff" brings an enormous amount of "realism" to any scene... That grass think looks perfect as well, very good hunt!

Everything is looking wonderful. That tile paper really is perfect.
I really will have to get that sunporch then, it fit's in just right. I will have to rethink my remodel plans for that building now.
Can the sunporch side wall be switched to the other end so it can go on the other side of the building I wonder?

Is the paper with the sand on it a roll of sandpaper - the kind that's used to sand wood smooth? It looks like a really coarse version of that.

Post by: bonniebeth on July 18, 2011, 21:52:23
Wow, it all looks so great! Those are some great finds, Birdie. And i may copy with slight adaptations your idea of attaching the sunroom to the vacation house. I don't have any houses yet except the vacation house, but I do have the conservatory, so I may attach them and add a few pieces and see what I can come up with! ;D

Post by: Birdie on July 19, 2011, 21:04:09
Good luck, I hope to see pictures when you've finished  :)

@ tonguello: I used potting soil  ;D It was a bit too dark when I first put it down, but as the soil dried, it looked better. When the soil dries, it will crack a little, so you'll have to fill the cracks up a few days later.

@ Tiermann: The sunporch is actually supposed to be attached to the other side, so that will fit nicely.
The sandy textured plastic is not sanding paper in any case. It's not that rough at the touch at all. My best guess is that it's used as some sort of vinyl flooring. I think it will remain a mystery   :sherlock:

Great village Birdie and like the others have said the extra elements really bring everything to life.

Where did you find the "sandy textured plastic" do you maybe have a brand name or something. it would be very usefull for some of the stuff I am working on as well :-)

Well, I found it in Brico (I don't know if they have it in the Netherlands, but in Belgium there's a Brico next to nearly every Carrefour. Just your regular large DIY store.

I don't have a brand name. It came on a big roll and they sell it by the meter. It's thick black plastic on one side and sand on the other.
I would be happy to go and look for it if you can't find any. I'm afraid it is a tad expensive though (2 meter op een halve meter voor 30 euro -> can't really translate this  :-[).

Birdie.
I love the way you combined sets from so many themes into a modern diorama! And the natural elements you added really make it come to life.
Had not thought of adding a conservatory to my two summer houses; that looks wonderful and makes them larger, which is great because they are too small out of the box.
Way to go, Pgal
