Title: Summer Playmobil Project: HighBack Mountain Train
Post by: Giorginetto on June 30, 2011, 10:43:03
Hello all

The mountain in Greece where our holiday home is is called ' High Back' and stands at over 1000m altitude in the Corinthian mountain region. Construction is on its way with over 100 LGB rails ready and probably another  50 that will be purchased , plus small diameter gravel in bright white that will be purchaed to put under the LGB rails and also manual laboutr by me to ensure that surfaces are level prior to laying down the gravel and the trucks . We have various power points outside, perimeter lighting so it should be equally nice to see at day and night . I shall use the 4052 with three passenger red carriers originally, victorian era passengers and with a bit of luck i will have a 4300 train station which i still havent got, ( anyone has a complete one for sale ??) . I have already made arrangements to buy 50kg of gravel that shoudl be enough and my father will give me a hands set it all up . I have some questions perhaps experts like schluss ( from whom i bought the train ) may answer

(1) The LGB tracks are they ok to use and leave outside for a while ? do they have any rusting parts ? if it rains is that a problem for them ? are they succeprible to damage and are there any points about them outside i need to be aware of ?
(2) Is there a limit as to how many rails i plan to use and at what distance , for example if i connect over 100 trucks and at lenghts of over 8 meters straight will a single 4375 transformer and 4372 power connector be enough to keep it all going or will i need anything else or more of these ?
(3) Are the 4375 transformer and 4372 power connector  ok to use outside? can they be affected by a bit of rain ? do i have any alternatives to use that are ok with light rain and moisture ?
(4) Is the 4369 better to sue outside ?
(5) is the 4052 ok to use outside ? of course i wont leave it outsde with rain or for prolongued periods !!!
(6) The 4375 transformer i have has two set of connectors , i use one and hte lights get stronger on the 4052 as the speed goes faster . The black / white connectors on the transformer what are they used for ? for light ? do i need to connect anotehr 4372 connector and if do this what happends ? are the lights on all the time or does the train run faster or better in any way ?
(7) are tehre any other tips/points i need to be aware of ?

many thanks all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! pictuires will follow of course !!!!!

I have some questions perhaps experts like schluss ( from whom i bought the train ) may answer

The rails are designed to be used outside. I know several installations that are outside since decades now.  Rusting is nearly impossible on brass.  Rain is normally no problem, only if the rails are flully floaded,  this can cause a short-circuit. It is possible to walk on the rails, but I would absolutely not recommend it.

(2) Is there a limit as to how many rails i plan to use and at what distance , for example if i connect over 100 trucks and at lenghts of over 8 meters straight will a single 4375 transformer and 4372 power connector be enough to keep it all going or will i need anything else or more of these ?

The limitation is the current which the engine of the loco needs. If you want to have a long distance you should add every xy meters a separate connection to the power supply. All electrical laws are also working on an electric garden railway. Each wire and each rail has a resistance, each connection between rails adds another resistance there power is lost.
(3) Are the 4375 transformer and 4372 power connector  ok to use outside? can they be affected by a bit of rain ? do i have any alternatives to use that are ok with light rain and moisture ?

Never use a normal transformator during rain outside!!!! The transformator should always placed in a dry environment!!! The power connector to the rail can be used, it would prefer LGB 50160 or 50161 (please google)
(4) Is the 4369 better to sue outside ?
This is not a transformator, more or less only a manually regulated restistor.

(5) is the 4052 ok to use outside ? of course i wont leave it outsde with rain or for prolongued periods !!!  Yes.

Never ever connect two or more transformators at the same time to one rail!!! Only use for each section, which are isolated against each other, one Transformator.
The 4052 is an analog loco, the light always depends on the voltage on the rail. Low voltage = low speed = less light  and vice versa  high voltage = high speed = bright light

(7) are tehre any other tips/points i need to be aware of ?

I guess a lots….., depending on number of locos, additional features, analog or digital,…..

That's great George"!!! but I hope this project won't stand in the way of the completion of the medieval city!!!  ;D ;D ;D
Can't wait to see both of them!
Sorry I have none of the answers you are looking for  :(

EDIT--- oops, schluss had them  :)

Yeap, Schluss is our Playmobil Train Master !!!!  :wow: :wow: :wow:..

So Rainer to understand a bit more about the connectors if i create say a design that is about 24m in total then every 6 meters i need to set a 4372 and hpow is that done? i will have only one 4375 then copnnect the first 4372 , then after say 6 metres how do i connect the second 4372 connector ?  :) :) :) :)

One more question , can i run the 4052 with say a couple of wagons for a total of 1 hours without stopping ?

Hi, let´s answer the questions:

1) Ok, seems to be a little complicate to explain in words, even if you are not a native speaker, but I will give it a try:

Imagine: Each track has two rails, these tiny things made out of brass.
A cable also has 2 wires.
A connector 4372 also has two wires, a blue and a red one.

Now take a track and connect the connector, the wires are now connected to the brass, e.g. blue wire to upper brass, red wire to lower brass.

If you are now attaching a second track to the first and applying also a second connector, you have to take care that also the blue wire goes to the upper brass and the red one to the lower brass . This could be done in principal to each and every track.

And now the important thing: Drill all blue wires together and than do the same with all red wires.

If you are now connecting the drilled wires (red = plus/ blue = minus) directly to your transformator, each and every track has a direct connection to the power supply, the transformator.

Now can you expand the tracks in your imagination: Due to the fact that the wires from the connectors are short, you also have to expand these wires and this is done via the cable lying in the ground.

2) Under normal circumstances this should be no problem, It would expect that the limiting factor will no be the loco, your power supply will get hot because the 4052 has two engines and lights and needs sometimes more than 1 A .

So check your power supply/transformator for the maximal possible load.

And maybe have a look at different connectors like LGB 50160/50161, they are making a more reliable connection.

Hope that my answer has clarified both questions.

regards
schluss

Thanks Schluss , this is all very help full , i got 12 x 1200mm LGB trucks and also 3 more 4372 connectors ( i already have 2) so i am gonna work out how much extra wiring i ned to connect all these 4372 wires each to one wire i guess. i also got  2x 4363 extra wire , dont know how long this is i suppose it might prove handy right ?

Anyways , lots of train questions and train purchases today, i just cant wait when i am on hoiday at the mountain house to set al this up !!!!!

Hi, please take care that you are using a sufficent diameter for the extra cabling. I am using 2 x 2 x 1,5 mm2.

Always keep in mind: Everything has a resistance.  And every resistance converts power in to heat...You want to have the power on the tracks, nothere else.

Hi,

depending on the way you are going to connect both transformers you are going to kill yourself or blowing up your train......

IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA !!!!!!!!

If your train needs more power, you need a stronger transformator, not two of them.

If you want to use two trafos, you have to divided your tracks into divisions which are isolated against each other.

Hi,

If you are looking for a small transformator, I can help. A 4375 and two 4350 are available, I do not use them.

Regarding the most powerful one, I have to search. The limitating factor is the maximum voltage, should be limited to 14V, the current should be high enough that you can run more than 3 engines (the 4052 has two engines). Each engine needs up to 1A.

My private digital one has 15A at 22V....

Hi,

quick and simple answer:  NO

Why not: the AC input in the US is 110V, in your country it´s 230V....

So a 230V europena one whould be good then rainer? if i bought one of these i would imagine i still need to run cables for long length tracks right ?

Hi,
there is no need to run additional cables along the whole layout.
one input from the power supply may be ok, two of them are better (should be on opposite side from each other)..

It always depends on the size of your layout.

Hi,

Both signs are equal to each other, They do not have any function, only a cosmetic gadget.

On opposite side you mean at the two far ends of the set up, both will be connetced in the same way into the truck correct ?

Thanks Schulls , your help is so so appreciated !!!!  :wow: :wow: :wow:

I have 60 x 300mm trucks = 18 metres , 36 x bended 300mm trucks = 10.8 metres , 2 x direction choose trucks = 0.6m, 1 x X truck = 0.3 m and  12 x 1200m trucks = 14.4 m . thats a total of 44.1metres of truck, i reckon that is enough to make something worthwhile  for all you playmo fans to see !!!!! i doubt i will be using the X connector though ...  :P :P

Let´s offer a bet : You are going to need far more of these:  2 x direction choose trucks = 0.6m in the near future.....

There are nice tools which can help to draw layouts before building it in reality like raily....

Greetings all from our mountain house at southern Greece at the Pelopponense peninsula at 1100m altitude ( from now on called Playmo den number 3 )  I just arrived here and in a few hiurs i shall start setting up my outdoor trains . Here are a few pictures of my playmobil/LGB items , bearing in mind i have another 10m or so of truck lengh ( brand new) that i will pick up from a shop next week and will use in our wetsern diorama . My western train/ train station etc are excluded as well as the 4300 train station that will be used in the otehr dioramas. Anyways as you can see the control unit is an LGB JUmbo unit, i have quite a few spare connectors and wires and then a fair amount of truck , 12 x 1200mm  new, 3 x 600mm, about 60 or so  i think of 300mm and around 35 of bended 300mm ones , also an LGB end of track with light, 4 LGB two way tracks , 1 xross track and an LGB bridge, with boxed 4051 and 4052 trains and 4 red passenger wagons, 3 x 2nd klass, 1 x 1st klass. Also 3 MISB (!!!) playmobil engines. Pictures hopefully tomorrow of my outdoor set up , i hope its not too hot tomorrow !!!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D. DAy after tomorrow its all back to medieval ages again !!!

Here are pictures so far of the high back mountain station as it is so far, still havebnt used a few remaining tracks , the other 3 passenger wagons and of course the 4052 train which is more powerful. I set the Jumbo unit at a max of 14V and the train is gpoing fine. At the dirt part where the tracks are over some stones and there is a bridge , the train slows down a bit but still going fine. Need to bring a train station too to mnake it all a bit better and a water tank ( currentlyh reaserved for the western diorama though ) .Anyways, this was my very first attempt , tommorrow after some cosmetic improvements will put in the 4052 and take some more photos and a video before going back to the middle ages ( my mediaval diorama ). Verty hapy with the Jumbo unit i must say. I have estimated i need another 25m of track to extend to other parts of the garden , outdoors ,also anoter 4-5 bridges similar to the one i got probablu, but will give it a lot fo thought before deciding the layout . anyways, here is my bery first attempt !!!!

Hi George,

you should use more flat stones to underlay the tracks on the earth, otherwise the plastic noses which are fixing the rail to the trach can be damage due to the weight.

PS:  Nice layout!

Amaing collection, George! - So much track!

I'm not an expert, I have none of the metal ones, but as far as I know, the playmobil metal rails WERE LGB rails.

Playmobil took a lot of LGB track sets/transformers etc and either packaged them as their own, or labelled them as Playmobil

No, they had permission as they worked together to produce the train sets. I am sure it will be explained in the new train FAQ :)

... and here is a picture of the 4052 next to the 4051 and all the passenger wagons, the 4052 can easily pull all the 4 wagons and it rteally really fast . i need to do a bit more levelling at a certain couple of areas to improve the handling of the trains, there have been a couple of derailings already !!!    ... in a few minutes i will be posting a video on youtube taken with a camera on board the 4051 , 4052 to foillow tomorrow .

hey, can you pm me your address and what times you'll be away from home unguarded?  Oh, and if you have a security alarm, I'd appreciate it if you pmed me the passcode as well.  Oh, and make sure your bed is comfy, and make sure your porridge isn't too hot, or too cold, but just right.  And leave a little bit of cinnamon in it for me.  Thanks :)

I would like to have the adress also, but not for taking away the train and tracks, only for some weeks of holiday.
Greek mountains are looking fine. Any restaurants and/or supermarkets near by??

Where´s the next airport?

To get to this garden you have to go through 3 gates , cameras , movement detection lights etc etc, there is a rather elaborate security /alarm set up in this house !!!!   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I have posted three videos of the lots, its all being dismantled and stored in the mountain house ( Called Playmoden Number 3 now ) as it makes no sense to keep them else where. Now, the hard part will be to resist to buy another 20-30metres of track ( rather fancy these LGB 1200mm tracks , they make it all so easier and faster ) and set a more complicated train set up with a 4300 station, water tank and more trains . There will be more pictures and videos very soon , before the rains and snow comes ( it always snows there every year )

I really really love the playmobil trains and all LGB stuff is superb quality . A truly great collaboration probably the best playmobil has ever done with a 3rd party. shame really all these are not available anymore, shame really. These RC trains are soo inferior but i can understand their marketing appeal, i wont buy any of them though. watch this space , soon there will be a much bigger set up with more , more trains !!!!

Our  stoned home is at the outskirts of the village at the top of a hill overlooking the entire valley under and the sea at the far ...  we have a tiny chapel also ( St Fanourio ) in our land   :)

I have run ou tof space in my master den , i dont think i have enough space left for all my dragonland/ vikings/ lion castle/ merry men/ forrest / magic to set and thats quite dissapointing so i know exactly how you feel .

No hiding ... just cautious for security thats all , alot of people do this at remote holiday houses that are not occupied all the time .. and be careful how you use the phrase ' simple people' sir as it can be very badly misunderstood  :)

I am not rich , i work  very hard for my living  like everyone else and so does my wife  and would appreciate such commentary be excluded from public posts as well they arent appropriate i am sure . Many people especially in remote places have extra security in homes that are occupied for short periods during the yeat including 'simple' people like me . Oh do grow up alex some of you posting  i am sorry to say is  childish and on the verge of being offensive  :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:. and dont take offensive  please thats truly friendly advice  :) :) :) :) :)

I am in the process of designing the next set up that will  include an additional 25metres of truck brining the total to about 80-85metres !!! Hopefully all this will be set in mid october and pictures / videos will be posted then . i shall be using also more trains and run two trains probably at the same time . Still need to learn a few things about LGB tracks and trains but working on it .... :)

Well thats a good question. I want to but i am concerned that they very fast collect dirt, leafs and bugs , in just 48 hrs the state of my track was really bad. of course all that casue no damage and everythign can be removed quickly. With long trucks , 1200mm , it dont take that long to set such a track actually so its most likely i will set it , leave for a few days and then store it again, the locos and all the equipment of course is stored in the house and never left out unless played with ....  :)
