Title: Crisis update
Post by: Wolf Knight on June 12, 2011, 18:10:44
I've been struggling for a long time now to fit all my playmobil in one room (there are still a lot in the living room, kitchen and bedroom)... but I think I managed to do so today... now 90% of my playmobil is in one room... I used to have my desk and computer in the playmoden but moved it in the living room and moved the shelves from the living room (loaded with the pyramids, pirate island, farm etc) in the playmoden... this is the result...

I tried to give you a round tour of the playmoden... Its not very well organised and I am not completely happy about it, but will keep working on it...

Thanks Bonnie!! I used the small boxes to store groups of klickies... the medium boxes also have of knights or items related to certain themes. the see through square boxes at the back have mostly steck in them and I also used the boxes under the pyramid shelves for steck... the big trouble is in the big boxes... mixed up sets or vehicles or carriages or spaceships whose klickies were used in other projects... There is one box that has fairytale carrriages, medieval tents, a spaceship and carry-alongs  8} I am obsessed with one box keeping a sinlge theme items... but its not easy... also, see the open blue containers on the glass table and smaller ones on top of big boxes? these hold klicky body parts...and I want all these six containers together... but I have nto found a place to put them all together  :wall:

Panos, it sounds like we both have the same problem when it comes to organization -- we're expecting too much perfection! Sounds like you have a pretty good system going, and you know where everything is. Unfortunately, the only way to ever have it perfectly organized is if you stop buying stuff! As long as there's more coming in, you're always going to have more organizing to do.

I don't mind organisation... I love it actually. I wish I could do a job related to it...  But you are absolutely right Bonnie... One must think for a bit and realise that getting all that playmobil is for setting up and enjoying it, not struggling how to keep it in boxes... still, if you want to enjoy such a big collection, you need a good organising system  ;D

Yeap. A storage room more like it. As I've written in my first post, 90% of my playmobil are now in that room. there are a lot of playmobil still scattered around the appartment but the idea is to have them all together stored and thus easily accessible for projects, photostories, dioramas etc that can be set up on  big table in the living room. These are so many playmobil Alex that displays cabinets cannot fit them. And the money that will be spend in cabinets, I prefer to spend them on more playmobil.

The glass would be a god idea, but as I said to Alex, too many playmobil in here to keep behind glass... but I have the ioniser now in place and no dust is allowed in the room  ;D

Pity he's not here. I have a room (I was gonna say empty, but it's full of stuff) that is to be my playmoroom. However, I can't make up my mind on how to do it, to maximize both shelf space AND free floor to play - I mean, make a dio... ;)

If you're asking for advice, I share some.

I never thought I'd say this, but ...

Sell off some of what you have.  Get rid of all your extras (ie keep only one pyramid).

You are in a very limited space and if you stopped buying any more Playmobil (can you see yourself never buying more Playmobil again?!) you would still be in the same situation you are in now.

You have two choices.

1)  Downgrade the amount you have

2) Move to a bigger place.

You missed the point of this thread Wesley! I dont look forward to narrowing down my collection at all. Nor any advice around this issue. True I could do with some less items and sets. But you lack imagination to see that multiple sets, as in the case of the three pyramids (and I actually have a fourth one still in its box) can work very constructively, lets say for a Giza diorama.

I dont look to have my collection widespread throughout the house. As I said earlier, and perhaps you have not read the rest of my posts, this is a great solution to keep everything in one room and have easy access to setting up projects at another area. And you know what, one day I'll have my bigger place... I just wait for certain people to move out.
Title: Re: Crisis update
Post by: bonniebeth on June 14, 2011, 22:39:19
Yes from a collecting standpoint one of each set is perfect. But for more creative pursuits, you must have multiples of some items. I mean, really what would be the point of one pyramid? You must have three to do a decent dio! (I only have one, but would have three if Egyptians were a priority.) I know the pyramid was just an example, but the same can be said for armies of knights, medeival houses, ships, police cars, indian teepees, there are a lot of reasons to have multiples of items!
Title: Re: Crisis update
Post by: Tiermann on June 14, 2011, 23:55:59
There's lots of empty space inside a pyramid. You could fit a lot of Egyptian klickies and accessories in there for storage, and 3 pyramids gives you 3 times as much storage space! :D

Also I will point out that because of the shape you could put one upside down between the other two and use a third less shelf space.
Title: Re: Crisis update
Post by: bonniebeth on June 15, 2011, 00:06:33
Funny you should say that Tim, until we took our pyramid apart and put it in the egyptian box recently, it had a bunch of random stuff stored in it, from customizing tools to random pieces to a whole race car! But if I had shelves as deep as Panos' I would leave mine set up and store other egyptian stuff in it, that's a very good plan! It's even big enough to fit camels in!

Tim these are two very constructive ideas!!! Some paper tape must be used though to keep the pharaoh engraving and the side of the piramid in place, so they dont fall out, but otherwise a great idea indeed!!

I dont think getting rid of stuff will ever be an option for Sir Wolf !!!     .. My wishes sir is for your collection to grow that much so you dont have any space at all in your house as its going to be full of playmobil  ;D ;D ;D ;D. if you seriously need some space for 'slow moving'  parts etc , you are welcomed to use some of my space in the 120m2 underground private garage we  have in athens , there is a separate room in it about 25m2 , that will be converted into playmoden #3 in september so there will be playmo there from then anyways and i might bring all my playmobil there sometime in 2013. i dont see how you could ever depart from some of your playmos to athens though to be honest , however as i have lots of space there and its more like a living room rather than an underground garage ( cars are not there therey are in a diff garage ) you are welcomed to leave some stuff if space is needed  ;)

There is an area maybe you have not exploited yet.  Under your bed.

You can get storage bins that roll under your bed:

http://www.google.ca/search?q=under%20the%20bed%20storage%20bins&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&oe=&redir_esc=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1059&bih=543 (http://www.google.ca/search?q=under%20the%20bed%20storage%20bins&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&oe=&redir_esc=&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1059&bih=543)

Where there is a will there is usually a way.

Unless it gets like this:

Its a low bed doesn't fit anything under it, and besides the bed room must never be stuffy.

Title: Re: Crisis update
Post by: Rasputin on June 15, 2011, 16:47:09
I do not see what the problem with having playmobil all over the place is? In Wesleys link (I can not watch due to old program) it looks like those are more like pack-rats that keep every single piece of garbage that gets in their path. When we bought our hobby farm the old man lived here for 60 years. He lived through the great depression so he was so used to keeping stuff. It took us 5 years to finally clear out all of his "treasures" of old lawnmower parts, a dozen 55 gallon barrels full of pieces of aluminum foil (I guess he was going to melt it all down and make a plane to bomb the japs with), mountains of lumber and just about anything you could imagine , except anything really worth anything monetarily. In all we threw away at least 20 full dumpsters that were 30 yards each.

So if playmobil taking over your house is a crisis, well sigh me up I want one, or two crisis's .

PS: looks like I may need to find a new place also as a business partner just said our barn will be perfect for our new venture  :hissyfit: Waiting to hear from our electric company if they will give us more amperage to power it up and if they do, I get evicted again  :'(
Title: Re: Crisis update
Post by: bonniebeth on June 15, 2011, 17:51:07
Sorry to hear your playmobarn may come to an end, Ras. :(

I had some playmobil in under-the-bed boxes for a while. But that shape of boxes is so limited in what they can fit. Only the smaller parts can be put in there, huge chunks like baseplates or vehicle parts don't fit. So it can be a bit frustrating trying to use them. I ended up abandoning that plan and I now enjoy having nothing under my bed so I can easily sweep the floor under there and keep my allergies down.

I have three shelves with some stuff displayed, but I envy all your shelves, Panos, to display so many sets! i would love to be able to display that much. I'm going to need to find a place to display that mansion in the next couple of months, though, because it is NOT going in the closet!

why?  :hmm:
Principles of feng shui or similar.  The bedroom should be the least sparsely furnished in the house so that you can properly relax and so that energy and stuff can circulate properly.

In theory there should also be no electrical appliances in there (not even an electric alarm clock).

Or there may be another reason!!!

Exactly what Alison described! the bedroom needs to be tranquil for body and mind to relax, even when sleeping! Thank you Alison  :)

more questions.....

Alex this type of questions have anything to do with the topic. Please use Pm's for this kind of conversation
It is not bad to make questions but it is a problem if they lead to derail the topic  ;)

Fantastic organization!  It's fun to see all the medieval houses that you have on the top of one of the shelves.

UGH Storage...the necesary evil that comes with a big collection.

Your looks very good Sir Wolf very well organized and should be indeed very easy to access to start new projects.

We have out 1,8x2,4 meter table which we can dump ALOT of stuff under. But we're slowly getting cramped :(

Thanks for sharing and I am happy to see I am not the only one who doesn't want to think about shrinking their collection.
