Title: Houghton Hall A Palladian Style Mansion
Post by: Emma.J on June 07, 2011, 00:03:01
 :wave: Hi every one it's finally time to share my latest finished project. Although I'm sure most of you will have seen it all by now anyway. Here's a couple of links first to my blog.

If you want to know how I built H.H. this is the page for you. http://emma-j1066.blogspot.com/p/houghton-hall.html (http://emma-j1066.blogspot.com/p/houghton-hall.html)

If you'd just like to see a few more of the finished pics visit here http://emma-j1066.blogspot.com/p/houghton-hall_06.html (http://emma-j1066.blogspot.com/p/houghton-hall_06.html)

I've just been sat in my livingroom admiring HH after taking a few photos in the dark. I have to admit I think it's the best thing I've done so far. I'd love to build a couple of extension wings on it, maybe a dowager house, chapel, stable block and a formal garden like those Karim builds for his Mansion. But I have have a large problem, this is the only place I have room for it. It actually hangs off the front it's that big. About 118cm x 60cm x 80cm tall.

It's big but I think I've managed to pack in most things you'd want in a small Mansion, including grand central staircase, servants quarters, lights and a working dumb waiter. Even by popular demand from this forum a library.

I can't keep it there as much as I like it, so if anyone would really like to own Houghton Hall pm me.

I really can't. It has a working dumb waiter!!!! I... it... hm. I really just can't find any words for this. Unbelievable. Emma, I can't imagine you possibly topping this, but if anyone can, it's you!

 :lol: You guess right. In a way, actually the name is very descriptive.  It's the precursor to the elevator, invented by Thomas Jefferson. It doesn't carry people, but rather objects, like food or tea, from one floor to the next.

 :-[ Thank you very much all for your kind words and applause. I loved your comments Hadoque about falling of your seat!

where is the see-though dome from Emma? I love how the sunlight goes in.

It's just the ordinary palace dome, but I've cut out all the little panels leaving the frame and the struts inside.

 :o :o :o :o :o You must be using Hermione's time turner!!!! How do you find the time to work???? Amazing!

BTW... I guess by now that a dumb waiter it is not a really stupid garçon  :lol:, so what is it??

Well I don't go out to the pub! I might spend a few hours a day working on things, then I've got a couple of days off a week so I can get more done then. Also some things just get quicker the more you do them. If this had been one of my earlier projects when I first started customising it would of taken 6 months. Now I know the best way to paint the walls, how to customise the furniture better.

What took the longest was working out the new stuff like the lighting, dumbwaiter, altering the kitchen to fit the built in range, the staircase, the roof edging and the portico. If I had to use some of these features again I'd be able to do it easier as I know how it's done.

Oh and I don't have kids! I'm the kid in my family so I can do pretty much as I want, if I want to work till 2am then no one will mind,  8}

So there you go.  Oh, and I also love it to!

Ok if you look up an English castle called Stokesy that's what I'm planning on next. It has a large stone tower, with long hall, an enclosed grounds and a Tudor gatehouse, I don't know if it will work I haven't had time to sit down and plan the construction yet but that's my next thing after I finish of a couple of commissions. Then I have a 3 story Tudor Manor house to finish and a medieval market. But these are things to do for the rest of the year.....

Dearest Emma  :wave:

Once again you have pushed the boundaries of excellence & refinement in this Masterpiece of a Grand Mansion  :love:

The Staff quarters remind me of those of Downton Abbey which I love !

The mansion is reminiscent of the grand country houses such as Chatworth which inspired Pemberley ( Pride & Prejudice ) and the dome reminds me somehow of the magnificent dome which overlooked the grand staircase of Titanic  ;)

Everything is just perfect and of the most exquisite taste  :cloud9:

A small scale suggestion;
Perhaps the castle (chateau de Moulinsart) from Tintin & Captain Haddock?

It would be quite fitting with the release of Steven Spielberg's movie based on "The Secret of the Unicorn" later this year (in this Tintin-adventure  the castle shows up for the 1st time)...

Or on a larger scale; maybe the French castle which inspired Hergé for his books?
It it the "chateau de Cheverny" in France. Hergé left off the left and right sections for Tintin's adventures...

not only are your customs amazing, the sheer feat of gathering/researching/finding/buying all the items required for your customs is awesomely amazing in and of itself!  I'm sure acquiring all those parts is not easy, having to find creative ways to procure vintage out-of-production pieces, not to mention your non-pm accessories/decor....WOW.  I'm so amazed at you in every aspect of its creation dear Ms. EmmaJ!  Bravo! :love: :love: :love: :love: :love: :love: :love: :love: :love:
