Title: Seaport & Beachtown Coastal Railway Co. Ltd. in the garden
Post by: playmofire on May 18, 2011, 13:11:20
We were recently away for a few days so I decided to move the track from around the pond and store it inside.  However, as it was a fine, sunny day I decided that in the process I would set out a layout on the lawn to see how the loco ran over an undulating surface.  Here are some photos of the trial.

At one end I had a simple terminus with a run around so the loco could be run round from the front to the back of the train for the return journey:

At the other end I had a siding and a loop so that the train automatically ended up ready for the return journey:

So here's the train just after setting off for the run towards the loop end:

And then out in the country:

Here it is on the return journey:

And finally arriving at the terminus with another train:

I was quite pleased with the trial as the lawn was far from level in places.  For example, the trucks on the siding at the loop had to have the leading one off the rails to prevent them running down on to the main line.  And the unevenness was also lateral with the loco and rolling stock tilting to one side quite noticeably on some sections.

The layout is now indoors, scattered about the place as I experiment with different variations.  It can't return to the pond for some time as where it was is now covered with plant pots in places to keep the birds (crows, gulls and a heron) from taking the frogs from the pond.

It looks really great Gordon.

Wouldn't that be fixed if you just had the training running circles day and night, I am sure that would scare away the birds as well, maybe include some sound effects?

    It would cost a lot in recharging batteries I think!

Hmm, but with LGB I would only be able to afford two lengths of track!

Hi Gordon,

Love the layout.
Did you buy that 4010 three times or did you order that wagon from DS?

I have invested all in LGB, second hand it is not that expensive, I really dislike the look of that plastic track. That is why I don't buy rc sets because I fear that I can't get rid of it.

Hi Gordon,

Love the layout.

I bought a 4010 loco and truck off Walter (walts-trains) and the other two off playmoking on eBay.de.  I've dealt with playmoking a number of times and found him very good.

I have invested all in LGB, second hand it is not that expensive, I really dislike the look of that plastic track. That is why I don't buy rc sets because I fear that I can't get rid of it.

I'd like to use metal track because that would mean I could electrically operate points but LGB track, even secondhand, is very pricey over here.  Examples are a right hand point for £90, a curve for £2.50 plus the same for postage, 4 lengths of 1200mm track for £66 plus nearly £14 postage are some examples.  By contrast, for £53 including postage, I bought 18 lengths of Playmobil track, 6 curves and a left hand and a right hand point from one buyers and for £34 including postage 20 straight lengths from another buyer.
