The engine called Toby is based on a Thomas the Tank Engine character.  Thomas the Tank Engine is a series of very popular English railway stories for children originally written in the 1940s by the Revd W S Audrey.

Thanks for the link Richard! I have seen those before, but it is always good to look at the pictures again. That is a beautiful layout, and I am inspired every time I see those pictures.
