Title: hello from amsterdam
Post by: viviana on May 11, 2011, 19:32:16
Hello playmofans from all over the world!

it's such a pleasure to join this nice playmobil community and I'm looking forward to hear about your collections and be able to talk about my most favorite toys.

I started playing with playmobil when I was 6, but after a while my mom wouldn't let me buy new stuff and so my little friends were kept on the shelves for a couple of years. I recently rediscovered the wonders of my old playmobil collection and now I'm back to collecting again, mostly I focus on the city theme, the farm and the leasure theme. My next big goal is to purchase the playmobil school, but I'm a student so it might take some time before I have the money.... In the mean time I''ll enjoy just looking at your collections and hopefully one day I'll be able to call myself a 'serious collector'  :)

kind regards, viviana

Hi Viviana!

Welcome to the forum and thank you for the lovely introduction!  :D

Size of a collection is not important here - it's how you feel about Playmo that matters! ;)

@ playmoholics: i'm doing a masters in philosophy right now and i hope to graduate next academic year. after that, i would like to do a course on leading 'philosophical' conversations with children. so that's not about the transference of knowledge, but about stimulating children to analyse their own thoughts and make them comfotable exchange their ideas with others... this is what i really would like to do, and i already work with children when i'm not studying.

@ Sylvia: of course it's not about the size of my collection :) but it would be nice to be able to expand it so i can build a playmotown...

@ Jimbo, Gis, Hadoque, playmo1989, bonniebeth, flatcat, skywalker, warrioroftoys, Bill Blackhurst, el jefe, tonguello and Wolf Knight: i'm pretty sure that i'll have great time here. ( and that it provides lot's of hours of distraction from my studies  ) Thank you all for the welcome words you wrote

A warm welcome from the UK, Viviana!     Don't worry, you can be a serious collector with only two Playmobil items, maybe even one!  And the Playmobil will be a nice relaxation from your studies when you've made all your notes and written all your essays.

Thanks Playmoholic. it really wonders me how education is so much more focused on the transference of knowledge than on thinking itself and learning to cope with emotions and such. when i was young, i was one of those annoying kids who always had questions and i was always so curious about so many things. somehow i didn't feel very encouraged iy eagerness to know more and more... and actually playmobil was very important for me then ;)

and today i bought the summer house, which i'm really excited about! i'll post pictures later

That is a huge problem I have with the American school system as well  :hmm: They don't teach students to think for themselves, or problem solving for that matter. Especially since so many children (and people) think, processes information, and learn differently, I think that focusing on problem solving would really help more people learn more when they are in school. But don't get me going on that subject

That is also why I like Playmobil. I think it is so wonderful how it inspires imagination. I am getting the summer house today too

With you 100% there, Jenna! The schools here just feed information for kids to spit back into standardized, multiple choice tests, rather than teaching the thrill of learning and exploring new worlds. You can graduate high school with an appalling lack of knowledge about anything or ability to think things through, and most don't even care that they know nothing.

I agree that playmobil helps kids enjoy learning something, whether it's about history or animals or dinosaurs... it makes it interesting.

Electronic games are the demise of learning! There is little thought processes needed to be fast with your fingers. :hmm:

Yes, that's very true! But at least they have made preschool television very educational. I can't believe what Collin picks up from Diego and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Hot dog!  ;)

I imagine it makes fantastic student housing! It is a little dorm like.  :picsplz:
I am probably one of the few who are actually using it for a summer house. I don't have very many modern-theme sets. It serves as a little vacation home for "our family" and have it set up next to the pool and beach. Though, I am finding the layout to be a little restrictive of play, so I am contemplating making a DS (Direct Service) spare parts order to add another level, but we will see  ???

Viviana,
Hope you are having fun with your summer house! There are some very nice pieces in that set. I love the arbor and brick wall pieces. One day I will expand mind with another set and extra pieces as the design is quite lovely.

It is great that someone is studying how to make children think rather than just memorize facts and spit them out again and again. I refused to give multiple choice tests as a teacher because that only rewarded the best test takers and did not promote thinking.

Good luck with your studies, Pgal

Hi from Antwerp

I love that summer house (actually I love all the Playmobil summer houses  ;D). So sad to hear your mum made you stop collecting Playmobil when you were young. I would have put up quite a fight
