Title: Bonnie and Chris's latest purchases
Post by: bonniebeth on May 04, 2011, 18:22:26
I've decided to do the same as some other members here, and start a thread that I can keep updating to show my latest purchases, and also my husband's (clong). So, I will start with today's haul, which I am quite excited over!

I decided to go to a different Tuesday Morning in town today, as the one by me didn't have much playmobil. And guess what? They had LOTS of playmobil specials! Including several discontinued ones that I have been really looking for. So I bought one of each, along with a few other sets they had, including the small roman arena. The specials were 2.49 each. The only special they had that I didn't get was the little boy in the blue pajamas brushing his teeth. I'm most excited about the purple and gold queen, 4657, but they only had one. I would have bought them all if they'd had more. Anyway, so here they are:

Oh wow!!!The chimney sweeper!!! This was discontinued in 2005!!!!

Great haul Bonnie!!! Congrats!!!

The small arena is also interesting...

They have six or seven of those arenas, I was going to buy two of them, then I saw the specials, and I'm going to want to shop in Houston, so I had to watch the money. They must have had about 8 chimney sweepers!

I think of all the lot thats the oldest special, except if the diver is just as old...

Yeah, some of them aren't even discontinued, like the lady with the roses. They had a ton of the deep sea diver too. Most of the ones there they had lots of.

 I don't but I wanted that lily pad; i have an idea or two for it, the parasol could come in handy, perhaps in a gift shop, and the other set, I bought for the flowers in it. I don't have any of that kind yet, and it was cheap. I also really like that wheelbarrow...

Oh, Great haul  :o our Tuesday Morning never had this much when ever I check last year. Now you forced me to go again to our local TM and check. I really want the chimney sweeper, the Cossack, the Spaniard, the barbarian, lady in dress and the ship captain all in large numbers. I was able to get the small arena last year so I can easily pass on that one. If the arena had seating rather than plain walls I would get them all.

you enabler

Good grief, you lucky lucky girl!  I wasn't aware I wanted any of those because I didn't think they were available any more.  Just shows what different countries have got, and what sells in different countries and what doesn't.

I don't know how big Tuesday Mornings is (and what a funny name for shop, I think to myself) but our local toy shops are so tiny that they have very little stock at any given time so whatever they have is always current (or long gone!)

It is a funny name! It's called Tuesday Morning because every now and then they close down to restock everything and then re-open on a Tuesday morning.

Corporate info

"Tuesday Morning is a retailer specializing in upscale closeout merchandise, with more than 800 stores across the United States. Our successful concept was founded on a unique philosophy: sell first-quality, famous designer and name-brand merchandise at extraordinarily discounted prices on an event basis. Our 10 major events usually kick off on the first Tuesday of the month. We receive new merchandise shipments daily, and customers can return often to find the shelves replenished with new items."

The "extraordinarily discounted prices" is not really true as they jack up the suggested retail price and then claim a 50% discount. Specials sell for $3.29 in the US so it should be $1.65 for 50% but T.M. sells them at $2.50 and specials were never $5.00 anywhere. I say it is lying. Why not just claim a special was $15 and claim a 85% discount  ::)

LOL I have two of those! I was driving through Alabama on a roadtrip and stumbled across a TRU that had one of those huge bins in the hallway to the restroom. Inside were many damaged blue boxes...the prices were really cheap! It's a good thing I needed to use their facilities or else I wouldn't have seen them! I think they were $4.98.  ;D

Bonnie, if you could post a picture of the Captain and his crewman from set 5868, that would be great.
Part numbers too if you have them, I noticed that PlaymoDB doesn't have those two up yet.

You've been holding back Bonnie  ;D  Nice sets!!! The pirate one is interesting  :lens:

Bonnie, if you could post a picture of the Captain and his crewman from set 5868, ...

I would say that the captain uses the 4690 torso while the crewman has one of the 5814 torsos...

Why are these US sets reusing torsos from other sets? maybe playmobilusa are getting these in large numbers and mix them up in new sets?

Ooh, what a fierce looking captain.  I like him a lot  ;D

Is the other fellow bald? Completely bald? I ask because Isaac likes to make up litte Playmobil families of his friends, and two of his friends' dads are bald (one because he shaves his head and the other actually has lost most of his hair!!!).  We need bald dads

He is bald, but the bald "hair" comes with that scarf attached to it, it's not removable. I wish they would do a plain bald head.

There are a few other stores close enough but I do not want to go unless I can confirm that they will have the stuff I want. Can you pretty please give me the sku number off the items so I can call or check on their web site  :*)

Well, there are so many different numbers on the sticker, but I believe the SKU number is the one under the bar code, right? That one is 1015130. If they don't have one, let me know and I can pick one (or more) up for you. I think they had several. However the TM price is only 25 cents cheaper than the current PMusa price.

Just want to add in case you did not know that the number they need is not the SKU on the box itself but the number on TM's own label, below their own barcode. Does that make sense?
If you already knew then I'll just , you know, mind my own business... :-[

Ok, here we go:

Chimney sweeper:    1015154
cossack:                1015153
barbarian                1015151
yellow princess:       1015148

When you say roman, do you mean the set with caesar(?) and the column? That's: 1015126

Wasn't sure what you mean by spaniard, but the musketeer is 1015161, and the blue and yellow guard is 1015154

The two pirates with the cannon http://playmodb.org/setpics/5865.jpg is 1035058, and the set with the giant octopus, http://playmodb.org/setpics/5868.jpg is 1035054

That too is quite a problem,
But another one would be how they would shape the baldness...
How they have done so now (with the headband)
would, I feel, not be appropriate as it gives a rather deformed shape to the Playmo head.
And I feel too round a head would also not do.
Playmobil would really have to get it 'just right'. :o

Great new additions to your fast growing collection. Those carrying cases came in handy for many other things once the playmobil was taken out. My kids even use them for their banks and my mother-in-law wanted a bunch for sewing boxes, giving me the excuse to buy a few dozen of them  ;D

The few things I want to fix on the whale is the seam. I want to try and fill it and repaint the whale, maybe add some weight to it as well. I found it odd when the large whale weighed less than the smaller killer whale, nit picking yes  :P

Bonnie, I didn't even know this store existed. So after reading your post I checked in my area and there's a Tuesday Morning about 3 miles away from my house. So this morning I headed over there... sad to say they didn't have any specials, they only had the "two pirates with cannon" set, the "two pirates with giant octopus" set (pm 5868), I got one of those... and the green racer (4183) and the orange racer (4182)... I guess I'll stop by later in the week to see what else they get. I made a run to TRU to see if their clearance princes had gone down or if they had received anything new... nope. Just bits and pieces left... nothing I really wanted (or nothing I already have).

If there are any other Tuesday Mornings close to you, it's worth it to check them out also. One of the TMs near me had hardly anything, and one down the road had loads of it. I have no idea why.

I didn't take pics this time, but Chris and I went to TRU today and bought the new made-in-china ambulance and schoolbus. I actually don't think they are all that bad. The quality didn't seem all that different to me, and there was one thing I actually like better than the usual sets -- the way they were packaged. Everything was packed securely, with the vehicles attached to their surrounding cardboard with twist ties, rather than everything banging around in the box. The ambulance, I just don't think looks as pretty as the standard one, but I have no real complaints against it, and the klickys with it are great. We'll be keeping both of them!

Ok, ok, I'll take pics!

@toyologist: well, with the schoolbus, almost. I wish it had two stop signs on the side, and that they felt of better quality. I wish the door opened in a more realistic way, or at least out instead of in. The emergency exit not opening, I can deal with. Also, it would be nice if there were a swing arm on the front like most buses have to keep kids from walking directly in front, as it could be used for teaching kids about safety. Other than that, i think the overall look and feel is not bad. The ambulance, I think looks cheap. But the pieces and klickys included are fine.

The ambulance will be painted. which will be very easy because it is put together by screws so taking it a part will be easy and putting it together will be to and no paint damage possible by trying to snap the tabs in place.

It is interesting how the whole boxing method and assemblies have changed as soon as it hit the Chinese factory. Playmobil has never had twist ties holding things together and from memory only the ships were held together with screws. Geobra owns patents to some very high-tech mold technology so I wonder if they are only letting them use easy simple molds to protect these techniques

There hasn't been much new to report. I paid for a parts order today, but after this, we'll be trying to give our credit cards a rest. Chris wanted to take a three-month break from buying any playmobil, to which I objected strenuously because I want the mansion coming out in August. Yup, bonniebeth, that 5302 dollhouse it is at the top of my list, too! I check PM-USA everyday to see if it is available. It is my going to be my birthday present from me!

Meanwhile I am trying to build with what I have and only buy the pieces needed to finish the dioramas cluttering our house. It is so hard to not buy PM that I have to quit looking at eBay!

Luckily I only collect 3 themes at this point.

Haven't posted here in a while, but we've made a few purchases last few days. Our TRU is having a moving sale, with four ailes of playmo at 20% off. ;D So far we've bought: http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/your_set_list.pl?setlist=4234%0D%0A4237%0D%0A4345%0D%0A5884%0D%0A5885%0D%0A4265

A few weeks ago, Chris and I were at Tuesday Morning buying a bunch of playmo, and the cashier told us about a mom and pop toystore downtown that carries playmobil where she used to buy it for her kids. Well, today we went to check it out. I had never been to this store before, but it is the most charming little privately owned store, a converted house, with something new to look at everywhere you turn. They had so much stuff you don't see at regular toy stores, like painted tin toys, that kind of stuff. We asked the lady at the counter if they carried playmobil, and she told us very sadly that they don't anymore. She went on to tell us how much they always loved playmobil, but since target and tru started carrying it, they just can't compete price-wise. We told her about how we collect playmobil and described how much of it we have at home, and that if we'd known they were there, we would have come earlier. Anyway, she said they did have one set left somewhere, which we eventually found. It was this set: http://playmodb.org/setpics/4258.jpg which I have wanted for a long time, and I got it for 27.99!   I absolutely LOVE it! It's even better than I thought it would be! Anyhow, we ended up leaving our name and number with the woman, and if she finds anything else in storage upstairs she has promised to call us. :)

Yes, that's really a good find, the carriage is very nice and the drivers have beautifull uniforms (excellent for soldier-customs  ;) !
Actually it is sad that all these smaller stores, where one often could find rare sets, are or already have dissappeared or stopped carrying Playmo. It's the same story here in Belgium, now almost only the superbig toyshops (rather markets) remain... :-\
Title: Re: Bonnie and Chris's latest purchases
Post by: bonniebeth on August 27, 2011, 02:19:46
Yes, I thought it was very sad. :( This store seems to be doing very well, located near the garden district and a lot of newer downtown developments, and seeming to be viewed as rather upscale. I sort of had to wonder if after her conversation with us, she may consider re-negotiating with playmobil. she has our number to let us know if she does. In fact, when our money is freed up some we may go and talk her into doing what another local retailer offered to do, but they closed down before we had a chance. What was explained to us is that in order to start carrying a certain company's product, they must make an initial investment of a certain minimum amount set by that company. What they said was, they would look to see how much that amount is for playmobil, but suppose their set amount is $200, if we were interested in buying $150 worth of playmobil, we could tell them what it is we want them to get on their initial order, and when they get it in we buy the $150 worth we wanted, and now they have met their minimum without having to stick their necks out investing too much in a product before they know how well it will do. of course, there's not much in it for us except the satisfaction of seeing local retailers stocking playmo.

Thats an interesting plan, Bonnie.

I observed that there are so few privately owned little toys shops around here too... a couple o department stores carrying too much playmobil have made them reduce their orders... but then again, playmobil is a toy that sell so much... no more old sets in any toys shop... unless I am the cause...

Yep! I really love them, actually! Though i am going to customize the merman.... he is designed to look like Neptune, but neptune was never depicted as a merman that I know of... he was in human form and his clamshell chariot was driven by regular horses, not seahorses, because in addition to being god of the sea, he was god of horses.... anyhow, I'm going to turn him into a regular merman. LOVE the seahorse carriage! It's so much fun!

the only thing i don't love about the merpeople is that mermaids are mostly wearing pink...the merman (the young prince) should've definately come out in a different color...he's too similar to Neptune

What a shop like that could do is find out what the chains are carrying and then just get in stock what the chain stores don't have and market it that way so they are not directly competing and can even ride on the chains' "coat tails" if advertised properly.
Title: Re: Bonnie and Chris's latest purchases
Post by: bonniebeth on August 27, 2011, 16:36:50
Yes, and I was thinking about that also. I know off the top of my head exactly what target carries, which is now only the US exclusives (read: cheapo), and I know what lines TRU is carrying and can even probably predict what they will carry in the future, so it would be easy to point out what sets might have success if carried in this store. For instance, I talked to a man in TRU the other day who had seen the playmobil hospital online and was hoping to find it in store. Our local TRU has never carried that line, so it might be a good one. TRU also doesn't have the knights, farm, pony ranch, or the really good fairy tale, police, or fire sets. All of those would be good candidates. It remains to be seen whether our local TRU will carry the 5302 and company or the agents, but if not, those two lines are dynamite, especially for a rather upscale shop.

My heart goes out to all the small specialty shops that sold only toys or books or greeting cards that have been run out of business by the large chain stores. Can you imagine losing everything you own due to bankruptcy caused by competition from the large chains?
While we dearly loved Borders bookstore, which is now gone after a long, drawn out death march, it did put several local book stores out of business.

We are so lucky to have a small independent toystore, Science Safari, doing well in our neighborhood. They carry the full PM line and seem to do well. Our TRU has about half of Science Safari's merchandise and discounts it often...20-25%. Our TRU has only half of one long display of PM, so there it is a very small part of TRU's inventory. It seemed as if they stocked more PM before the recent remodel.

I like the strategy of helping out a small store by offering to buy certain PM in advance and fronting them the money to meet the minimum purchase to get started with PM. It sounds like a win-win situation. I would be surprised if that minimum order is less than $1,000.

It would be terrible if all the small toystores went out of business. Let's do more brainstorming to help them survive, Pgal

I know...I get chills down my spine when I think of all the independent shops in the US that have gone out of business in the last 15 years....so sad.  :-\  And what's even more sad is that it will only get even more difficult to find old, long-retired sets since the stores that once housed them are becoming a thing of the past.

Very true, Robbie. We don't have any TRU's in our town, but it's only a matter of time...
Most of the Playmobil I get locally is from Simply Wonderful toys. It has the usual, but I was happy to see the 3240 zoo sitting on the shelf!

I guess the same is true for nl with independents hardly exsisting anymore...although we do have a coulpe of secondhand playmo only stores (which for some reason I have never visited)

If you can convince them to carry PM again maybe you can help them with a festive relaunch including a diorama and maybe display part of your diorama in the store window. this might attract some extra customers.

Also US stores can carry the DS catelogue line that is also a bonus they have over TRU and other big chains right?

Good luck with your planning stage!

Post by: bonniebeth on August 29, 2011, 18:05:09
Hm, those are some very good ideas, Gis! That's something to check into about carrying DS items because TRU will most likely never have that. It would be very effective for them to sell say the zoo sets and have every kind of animal add-on, plus all kinds of extra fencing. Ok, I'm going to have to go back there when I have time.

Carrying the DS stuff is an advantage. Of the two local shops I frequent, one carries the entire DS catalogue!  They are priced the same as the website. The regular sets are way overpriced. So I shop there for specials and DS stuff and go to the other shop and get my sets because they are priced as the website.

Went to a mom and pop store here in town that I had never been to before, called Santa's Toy Emporium. We got the following, all on sale, around $90 total for all of it. ;D

We had a very interesting discussion with the owner of the toy shop, which I have posted about in the common room.

It's really great! I'm going to gradually get all the furniture sets, and then save up for the dollhouse. That way when I finally get the house, I'll already have all the furniture to put in it, instead of having an empty house and being too broke to buy furniture!

I bet your clickies would be looking forward just as much to that dollhouse, if only to get some privacy in that bathroom.  :)

Nice sets, any luck with the figure packages? (no doubles?)

I've had a great time with the F?gures! I've been able to identify what was in each bag I bought, and find what I wanted. I did decide to grab an extra bag last night without feeling it first, and it was a double, but the two I felt were exactly what I wanted. I haven't had any mistakes in the bags either, except that my pink princess came with an extra pair of arms and an extra hairbrush! So that was a nice mistake.

It was interesting that my TRU seems to have put away all the blue bags, and now just has a whole bunch of pink ones out. I've now got most of the pink ones I wanted, but I do want some more blue ones!

if there is not is there any chance the other stores in your area will have more. The only truck that playmobil now has does not have the trailer and that is one thing that makes this set so great?

I think the puzzles are great toys for very young kids. Looking at them as an adult they look boring and pointless, but when you look at it through a child's eyes, I can remember loving little puzzles like that in early childhood. They're a great idea for kids.

Haven't updated this in a long time, but I'm excited about these latest purchases. ;D Went to TRU yesterday, and we got the click and go pickup truck, set 4340, which was on sale 40% off. We needed a pickup truck for a future photo story.

Also got 5965 - Family SUV with Personal Watercraft (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=5965), a US exclusive, I believe, that is very similar to 5133 - Roadster with Jetski (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=5133), but cheaper at $19.99, with two klickys and more accessories.

The one I'm most excited about is the 5132 catamaran! One nice suprise is that it's glass-bottomed! I hadn't realized that. Absolutely LOVE this set. I'll probably do reviews of these last two sets. :)

The catamaran is great, I got an incomplete one last summer that didn't have the klickies or a couple of bits for it so was waiting until I got them to do a review, but put the wrong part number for one of the pieces on my last ds order.  :-[
Look forward to your review Bonnie - you'll save me a job

Yes, he's very thoughtful. And thank you, I'm sure we'll be ok, it's just a waiting game right now to see if it goes east or west of us. If it's east of us, we'll have beautiful dry weather, if it's west, we're in for a scary night! And some days with no electricity, which is a pain.
