Title: America... and the "Conquista"
Post by: Hadoque on April 26, 2011, 06:41:03
Long time ago I made some Conquistadores, of which I then showed a few pics (here or was it back in the days on Playmoboard, I'm not sure)
I've meanwhile updated this topc in my collection and made new customs, I'd like to show some of them here...

The first one represents "Montezuma",  ruler of the Aztec populations and their cities.

Here's Columbus, who first set foot on the Americas in the service of Spain.

Along with him came the Catholic Church...

1st one is a priest, sent to convert the Indian population to Christianity.

2nd one is also a kind of priest, but from the "Inquisition"...these fellows made use of torture to "convert" those who were not so willing to be converted.  ::) So I made that one in black, look bad, carying prison-keys and having (historically incorrect) a sword.

Along with the priests came the "Conquistadores"; Spanish noblemen & their soldiers, looking for gold and treasure in the New World...

The soldiers didn't spare the poulation; they raided and burned villages and cities, as well as the "Aztec books", known as the Aztec Codex. Only a few documents of these worthfull books about Aztec Culture survived the European invasion.

And finally... not for children's eyes...

The Spanish were also severe on their own; sailors or soldiers that attempted mutiny got punished... by death.  :o

Edit: pic was a bit too cruel to show. I'll try to modify it and re-post one.

Edit-2: pic modified!

I forgot to insert this pic of a mounted Spanish soldier... :-[
Sorry for the bad lighting... (probably that was the reason I had it not together with the other pics)

 :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

The Conqistadors were no angels but neither were the native indians who were carrying out human sacrifices including babies on a daily basis. Thousands of people were slaughtered in their blood pyramid temples and partially to blame  were also  these blood  customs of theirs that lead  to the brutality excerted from the spaniards to the locals. I think the spaniards were exceptionally brutal and conquestadors like Pizarro, Balboa, Cortes , Lope de Aguirre entered the history books not so much for their discoveries and condquests for the spanish crown BUt for the sheer brutality , and they called them selves christians. I dont think it was right to create conquestadors from playmobil , i am a bit surpised actually they created such a politically incorrect klikcy to be honest   ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

THey all look really great, Hadoque! I really love Montezuma, very well-done!

Speaking of the sacrifices made on these pyramids, my brother is in mexico and climbed one of them yesterday, the pyramid of the sun. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Piramide_del_Sol_072006.JPG

Yes, I know.
I don't take a standpoint about who was right or wrong - though here I put some emphasis in the text above, about the bad side of the Spanish - otherwise I wouldn't make neither Montezuma nor the Spanish Conquistadores.
In a way, I admire them both for certain aspects (f.e. the Spanish for their hardish voyages across the Atlantic in relatively small ships, the Natives for their architectural marvelous cities) and despize them both in a way too (f.e. the Spanish for their fever for gold, the Natives for their human sacrifices to their gods).

At least the indigenous did all the slaughter with the consent of the sacrified ones, for whom it was an honor - human sacrifices were part of their culture (as a tribute to their gods), not because they wanted to cause physical pain on anyone - hard to understand, but we can't change a thousand year old mindset.

Being born in a country where this happened 500+ years ago and as non native Spanish-decent Mexican i personally don't find these wondewrful customs as politically incorrect at all (this subject isn't precisely a taboo down here) - it would've been if Hadoque had used an brutally explicit setting

These customs are brilliant!! You show us here, Hadoque, what great designs we can do with plain playmobil parts!!!

Gaston, the colar is from the egyptian male from the egyptian family add-on  ;) and the crown is from a fairy!!! brilliant idea Hadoque!!!

Thanks for the replies!  :)

they raided and burned villages and cities, as well as the "Aztec books", known as the Aztec Codex. Only a few documents of these worthfull books about Aztec Culture survived the European invasion.

I must correct myself here:
The "codex"-books were from the "Maya" (these had a similar culture, but lived more to the south), not from the "Aztec"! I had been reading and watching documentaries about both Maya and Aztec and got the Codex-part mixed up...

With the remains of these "Codex" books the Maya-language and -writing is finally being translated.

Wonderful customs, Hadoque.  Playmobil would do well to follow your ideas.

Monterzuma looks just the part and the mounted conquistador is superb.

If you're supposed to be politically correct with toys, you can't even make Romans (slavery, world dominion, massacres...), or guns and canons for that matter.

I don't think it's our job to judge people who lived in different times with different mind-sets, however they acted. You can't apply our standards to their lives.
All people throughout history did things that would now be considered cruel. To other people or to animals, to women, to children...

So let's just enjoy the good things history can teach us. Very cool customs, Hadoque  :D  8-)

Superb looking Conquistadors, Hadoque!  I really like the diverse and historically accurate clothing and weapons you've chosen for them.  They would look magnificent together in a small diorama. :)
