Avie, Lizzie and Flatcat have decided that they want a bit more greenery in their yard, and so have decded to construct a pair of raised beds for growing vegetables in :)

(http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/491/jaguar001.jpg) (http://img19.imageshack.us/i/jaguar001.jpg/)

(http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/3336/jaguar004.jpg) (http://img269.imageshack.us/i/jaguar004.jpg/)

The idea is to clear the small area under the trees wear the truck is, and construct the raised beds there. (perhaps not the best of conditions for growing vegetables in, but oh well)

The truck hasn't been used for a while, as Lizzie uses the Smart or Avie's car

But of course, Avie cannot do it on his own! (partly the fact that he's too bone idle!)

Phil the brick layer is first to arrive:

(http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/9526/jaguar006.jpg) (http://img52.imageshack.us/i/jaguar006.jpg/)

He parks up, and Avie and Flatcat help him unload his tools:

(http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/2364/jaguar007o.jpg) (http://img690.imageshack.us/i/jaguar007o.jpg/)

Just then, Bob arrives in his Unimog, bringing machinery for the job:

(http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/5392/jaguar011.jpg) (http://img841.imageshack.us/i/jaguar011.jpg/)

Avie moves his car, so Bob can park up. He skillfully manuevers the minidigger off the trailer:

(http://img864.imageshack.us/img864/8695/jaguar012.jpg) (http://img864.imageshack.us/i/jaguar012.jpg/)

Bob and Phil then unhitch the trailer and park it up out the way:

(http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/7686/jaguar015.jpg) (http://img821.imageshack.us/i/jaguar015.jpg/)

Avie and Phil get ready to unload:

Just then, John and Andy pull up, with their Unimog laden with topsoil:

(http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/2383/jaguar020.jpg) (http://img600.imageshack.us/i/jaguar020.jpg/)

Now that everyone is here, Bob shows everyone the plans he has drawn up:

(http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/333/jaguar024.jpg) (http://img861.imageshack.us/i/jaguar024.jpg/)

Meanwhile, a skip is being unloaded:

(http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/9996/jaguar026.jpg) (http://img51.imageshack.us/i/jaguar026.jpg/)

Lizzie would love to come and see the plans, but is unfortunatley blocked in!

(http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/8194/jaguar028.jpg) (http://img853.imageshack.us/i/jaguar028.jpg/)

John parks up the Unimog, skillfully reversing the trailer with a dumper truck on it that they brought:

They wander over to acess the site.

The truck has flat tyres and a flat battery, so it will need to be towed out.

(http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/5104/jaguar034.jpg) (http://img819.imageshack.us/i/jaguar034.jpg/)

Andy has an idea, and fetches the mini digger:

(http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/158/jaguar035.jpg) (http://img847.imageshack.us/i/jaguar035.jpg/)

A rope is hooked between the two, and the old truck is slowly hauled up from the undergrowth:

(http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/7923/jaguar037.jpg) (http://img833.imageshack.us/i/jaguar037.jpg/)

With the truck out of the way, Andy starts to clear the top layer of soil and rubbish off:

(http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/696/jaguar039.jpg) (http://img23.imageshack.us/i/jaguar039.jpg/)

John brings the dumper round, and Andy loads it ready to be tipped into the skip:

(http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/6540/jaguar041.jpg) (http://img709.imageshack.us/i/jaguar041.jpg/)

With the rubbish cleared, Andy gives the area a quick level, and it is ready for the beds:

(http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/8227/jaguar044.jpg) (http://img801.imageshack.us/i/jaguar044.jpg/)

Ian the carpenter arrives on time, to create the shuttering for the concrete beds:

(http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/8741/jaguar045.jpg) (http://img821.imageshack.us/i/jaguar045.jpg/)

In five minuites he's got one done already:

(http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/6110/jaguar046.jpg) (http://img862.imageshack.us/i/jaguar046.jpg/)

Phil lays his brick edge, and begins to fill it up with concrete (I don't know who thought this was a good idea for a flower bed but hey ho)

(http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/3716/jaguar049.jpg) (http://img810.imageshack.us/i/jaguar049.jpg/)

Title: Re: Yard Work
Post by: flatcat on April 20, 2011, 17:08:57
After lunch, the concrete is dry enough to be able to start filling up the beds with topsoil.

Andy guides John back with the tipper, slowly inching the truck backwards, as the high concrete edge starts to give way

(http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/9973/jaguar053.jpg) (http://img850.imageshack.us/i/jaguar053.jpg/)

Crack Scrrrpp

The edge gives way, and the truck judders to a stop as it catches underneath

(http://img806.imageshack.us/img806/2389/jaguar054.jpg) (http://img806.imageshack.us/i/jaguar054.jpg/)

Petrol begins to leak out from under the truck...

(http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/706/jaguar056.jpg) (http://img683.imageshack.us/i/jaguar056.jpg/)

In all the panic, Phil throws his spade down on the concrete, which has slightly inconvenient consequences:

(http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/852/jaguar058.jpg) (http://img808.imageshack.us/i/jaguar058.jpg/)

(http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/6996/jaguar060.jpg) (http://img16.imageshack.us/i/jaguar060.jpg/)

(http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/9449/jaguar061.jpg) (http://img820.imageshack.us/i/jaguar061.jpg/)

(http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/3719/jaguar062.jpg) (http://img854.imageshack.us/i/jaguar062.jpg/)

Utterly terrified, they all flee for their lives, as the truck becomes engulfed in flames:

(http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/2217/jaguar067.jpg) (http://img251.imageshack.us/i/jaguar067.jpg/)

KABOOM!!!

The truck explodes, metal and dirt flying everywhere!

(http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/3479/jaguar070.jpg) (http://img708.imageshack.us/i/jaguar070.jpg/)

Oh no, Phil has been struck down by a piece of flying debris!

Lizzie goes inside to dial 999

Pumper 1 is soon to respond:

(http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1037/jaguar074.jpg) (http://img215.imageshack.us/i/jaguar074.jpg/)

It's this fireman's first day, bless him, and I don't think he has used the roof monitor before!

(http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/2881/jaguar075.jpg) (http://img96.imageshack.us/i/jaguar075.jpg/)

The fire is soon out, just as the paramedics arrive:

(http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/9831/jaguar077.jpg) (http://img825.imageshack.us/i/jaguar077.jpg/)

Poor old Phil is loaded onto the stretcher:

(http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/6593/jaguar079.jpg) (http://img225.imageshack.us/i/jaguar079.jpg/)

The 3 get into the ambulance, getting ready to set off for the hospital

(http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/4281/jaguar080.jpg) (http://img251.imageshack.us/i/jaguar080.jpg/)

But something's coming for them (it's not blurry, it's fumes ;))

(http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/5142/jaguar081.jpg) (http://img585.imageshack.us/i/jaguar081.jpg/)

Fantastic story, Damo, and a great cliffhanger! Very well-done and detailed. Pouring concrete as a base for flowerbeds really sounds like something my dad would do! I liked how you laid the flame down to show it crawling along the ground; that was a nice detail. Great story; I'd say "yard work" is the understatement of the century! :P

I only have the one large flame :-[ so had to make do

Yes, concrete isn't the best, but I was using the grey parts from the garden centre sets and this is how they come

Great work on the whole story

The client of this job sounds like some of my clients. Spend $10,000 to grow $2 lettuce

You mean you are not going to show the 6 months of litigation from all the insurance companies fighting over who is at fault with all the destruction  :P

Great story, Damo, and as always excellent photos.  I'm always how much action and detail you manage to get into each photo without overpowering the viewer, and how economical you are with the number of pictures you use - a master photo story teller.

I liked it a lot when Avie and Phil fell downloading the cement mixer! I loled!
The fact that you didn't even mention that made it more funny to me

My husband and I both really enjoyed this! Excellent pictures and story. I enjoy all your stories with Avie, Lizzie and Flat Cat. Are they, by chance, consolidated in one spot somewhere?

Thanks for the laughs!
