I think in basic terms you just create what you want to print to the right size and then print it on an sheet of A4 paper which is really a large peel-off sticky.  In the past I've also done it by printing onto photographic paper and then glueing it on to the item.

. there is always an alternative.. when i was a kiddo in the late 70s, early 80s i sued to design some things for my playmos by hand and cut them , glue them etc , I was really excited then with my custom nuremberg guards which was the same insignia but in blue /black . also i created some different flags back then....

These customs along with about 30-40 % of my toys original collection was swept away by a flood in the late 90s. I lost a few mediaval klickies includign some very rare 1st edition ones , lots of construction workers and vehicles, my entire playmospace collection which was massive , over 100 astronauts , a lot of police and fire brigate vehicles and klickies , my tv crews and old circus , and other playmo bit and pieces. Also lots a lot of lego, my entire airgum modern warfare, roman, space and alien collection ( over 200 action figures in total ) , my entire Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Collection of Action figures , some very rare robots collections and generally speaking a lot of my toy collection that was kept intact from my early years. But of course all that pale in comparison to the fact that my grandfather also from the shock and the upset it caseud his to see his beatifull estate house ( had old wine press at the back and big barrels full of wine and a huge garden with exotic plants etc etc )  being flooded passed away a few months later ...  :sorrow:.. we never got over this in my family ...
