Post by: Giorginetto on March 29, 2011, 20:17:59
I have been looking at my mediaval set up, quite rankly i dont like at all the dark roofs of the yellow, red , blue steck houses and contemplating to change it al to the classic red roofs , what do you think all ?? worth doing or not ????

I dont think thats necessary! the dark coloured roofs give the whole scene some diversity! not all roofs were made of red material ;)

I agree. Diversity is good. You don't see all the houses on the block with the same roof in "real life", but part of what I enjoy about Playmobil is that you can do whatever YOU like best. Nothing else matters. Whatever you decide  :picsplz:

In mediaeval times builders relied on local supplies because of the difficulties and costs of transporting heavy items such as tiles, so roofs would tend all to be the same colour in a town.

I agree George, diversity makes it more real.

Can I give you just a thought to make it more realistic? I hope you don't mind, I don't mean to criticise but to help. Maybe if you disorder the houses a little bit it would look more medieval. Medieval cities were really messy and yours (fabulous as it is) is too ordered and lined up  :)  just my two cents

Interesting, I would go with all red then. :)

I personally like having the various colored roofs with the various colored houses as well as the suggestion to disorder the houses, as this will make everything more interesting visually.

That written, if one were being completely historically correct, all the houses would most likely look like the white timber ones with the red tile roofs.

Coloured walls were common with half-timbered houses.

Here is an idea : I have actually  only 14 steck houses with the dark roofs, if anyone has adequete parts to replace the dark roofs with red ones ( need 14x4 bottom roof covers= 56 in total and 14 x2 roof panel with two window holes = 28 in total and 14x4 window angled tiled covers = 56 total ) and prefers to have the dark ones than the red ones  , i suggest we do a swap and i will throw in something extra or some $$ if needed. anyone who wants lots of dark roofs  out there ??? hhhmmmm  :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I rpefer to have all in red but wont pay for all additional parts and keep all the dark roofs etc etc , i got a massive red coat order coming up , it will be my biggest one off klicky order ever !!!

Anyone who has lots of red roofd and want these later dark one let me know asap !!!

I did not know that.  I've only seen white ones in photos and films, but that's interesting.

Coloured walls were common with half-timbered houses.

Castle walls were also painted.  White.  This would reflect the sun and it would be harder for any attacker to see anyone on the walls or through the windowns or arrow slits.

Interior walls of castles were also plastered and painted.  Often very decoratively.

As for roofs.  While certain areas might use certain building materials more predominantly than others different colours definitely add to any set up and make it look better.  All one colour might end up seeming quite boring, bland and repetitive.  Just my 10 cents worth.

What did they have a bunch of red clay in the area ? Would they have used material that was easily accessible to the local area ? IF so wouldn't the houses be very similar ? I can see how they could have colored the walls but the tile roof, wouldn't this be made of a natural material with out color pigments?

With your collection and pocket book I say make two huge cities. One with different colored roofs and another with one color. Take a lot of pictures and then we will decide? Great idea, right

Here is a picture of the roofs in Rottweil, Germany (Red Tile - from das Rote Wil).

Even though most of the buildings have red tiled roofs you can see that not one is identical in colour to another.  Close and similar, but not all the same.

Roofs could be slate, as well (a much darker colour that works perfectly for the dark roofs on Playmobil houses).  It really would have been nice if Playmobil had made a thatched roof for their medieval buildings.

Well, then you would need an earlier period house to go with it. ;)

i think i will stivk with the two colours for now, after all i dont want to spent more money on roofs I have spent plenty replacing the hollow sides with full ones, extra chimneys and extra parts for the royal quarters etc etc , maybe in the distant future, right now i need to buy western and redcoats
