Title: Pulled up my track today
Post by: tomegood87 on March 29, 2011, 19:44:47
I pulled up my garden layout today since I never run it anymore and It's becoming overgrown.  I found myself mostly running the trains indoors.  So I picked up the track so I would have more track for inside.  Here is a Video of the first layout I made around my pond.

The second version I made after this one way just a little bit bigger to get around the pond.  I don't have any Videos of it.  I do have some pictures of the Trains running in the snow somewhere on the computer.

Thanks for the video and the enjoyable trip round the pond.

I'm hoping to get some track out in the garden this summer and maybe round the pond.  This could be interesting in case of mishaps as it will be running round the top of the wall and so above the pond (and maybe across it on a bridge).

I wish i did I just don't have the space.  I will still run it outside some only on the patio.

That would be awesome.  This pond in the video is a little bit bigger now with a water fall.   I know I'm going to do it again some day just not under a bradford pear tree.

I do too.  I've been wondering, however, do children today?  You do not see many trains nor is it a common mode of transportation anymore (at least in Canada that was defined by railways following the wild west days - I think it was to a similar extent in the usa, as well).

Maybe this is why Playmobil is getting away from trains.  Maybe it is also the fact they can not use transformers in Europe anymore (hence the switch to R/C).

Any other tips you learned to do and not to do? I someday want to put a garden track in and do not want to make common mistakes, like your "under a pear tree" issue. I guess it was the constant suckers that caused you annoyance ?

I was thinking along the lines of bird poop! I've made the mistake of parking under a bradford pear tree at night before. My car was covered!  :o

I can't do one around my pond because I have a grape arbor along one side. Grape vines grow fast and grab onto things. Like the power mains line for instance...

But think of the great video that would make:  "Attack of the Killer Grapes!"   ;D

Great video, tomegood87!  I really like the way you managed to film so close to ground level - that makes it look very realistic.  The breeze blowing made a nice effect, as well.   :)

There are a few different ways to make the track bed out there.  I just smoothed out the area and put out some ballast and track.  I wish i had contained the ballast on both sides of the track since my ballast would wash away every winter.  After this last winter there way no rock left just dirt and mulch under the track.  One section of track was lifted up from mole tunnels. I still plan on doing this again someday I'll just put more thought into where I put it.

 Bird poop wasn't my biggest problem every spring white petals would cover the ground and stick to the rails.

Yeah, I can see how that would be a problem. A crepe myrtle tree would be even worse!
