Title: Police Motorcycles: a brief history
Post by: Wolf Knight on March 26, 2011, 21:38:35
After Primus Pilus's thread on his motorsycles, and since I wanted to do this for a long time now, here is a brief timeline of the playmobil police motorbikes.

In the 1st attachment  we see the very first police bike at the left hand side, as we are looking at the picture. This specific bike cames from the 3488 - Traffic Police (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3488) and was also available in 3155x - Police Truck (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3155x) which was an exclusive set; this bike can also be found in sets 3232 - Police Set (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3232) and 3401 - Policemen (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3401). Now, you'll notice that the bikes on the playmodb/collectobil pictures are blue, whereas in the collector sets, the bikes are green, probably a difference to distinguish the markets in which these sets were available, however, I have never come across such a blue bike. The first bike was also available in 3572 - Polizist/Motorrad (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3572) where an extra white windshield was placed.

For the middle bike still at the first attachment, this was the second edition playmobil bike and can be found in sets 3494 - Police Set (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3494) (one of my personal favourites  ) and 3564x - Policeman on Motorcycle (Green) (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3564x).

The third bike is the one I grew up with mostly, produced in 1987/88 and can be found in 3564 - Policeman On Motorcycle (Blue) (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3564) and 3489 - Police Set (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3489). This one was also used between 2001/06 in 3623 - Adventure - Police 2* (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3623) and has been recently reissued in 5891 - Police Duo Carrying Case (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=5891).

On to the second attachment, I believe we have all the variations of the police bike regarding this mold! The green german bike 3983 - Highway Patrol (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3983), and its export versions 3986 - Police Motorcycle (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3986) and 3915 - Police Motorcycle (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3915). This bike was also used in 5795 - Police Set with Jail (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=5795). The black bike that I believe is a US exclusive  3332 - Police Cycle - U.S. (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3332) and also available in 5013 - Police Station (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=5013). Last but not leat, the red and blue striped bike from 5917 - Take-Along Police Station (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=5917).

Finally, in the third attachment, the latest police bike 4262 - Police Motorbike internat. (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4262) and the german version 4261 - Motorradpolizist (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4261).

Now you've made me go get my camera. :D
This is an area I get all geeky about myself. There are a few other variations you've missed.
In this image you see the dirt bike from the first case carry set. 4218 - Police Carrying Case (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4218)
Then you see the early white version with green tank. Then the green version with white tank and the white panel from 3572.
Then you see the first glass windshield in both the German and International versions.
There are actually two versions of the Harley style bike - the one from 3623 is a slightly darker blue on the screen and has the only non-white police officer to date.

There is an additional variation of the cruiser bike seen in this image.
The second one is the blue with yellow stripes version from 5795 - Police Set with Jail (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=5795) that was released in Canada first and then very limited in the US.
I do not have the latest version from the carry along set yet.

Finally notice that the German version of the newest bike is silver while the International version is white.

I haven't ever found that very first version with a blue tank either.  There is a version with all blue body and a white tank and a red body and white tank. I have them but not on display just now. They are from an early racing? set, and there's a yellow one from the early postal set. I'm drifting off police here. :D

Thanks for covering the lapses Tim  :)9!  I had totaly forgotten about that dirt bike! :eh?:

Whats the difference between the fourth and fifth bikes?  ???

Never knew about the darker blue shade on the Harley nor the yellow stripes on that other bike either! Thanks!  :D

I love how all the latest german versions vehicles have the actuall grey colour of the actual german police vehicles! Very nice touch!

There is a version with all blue body and a white tank and a red body and white tank. I have them but not on display just now. They are from an early racing? set, and there's a yellow one from the early postal set. I'm drifting off police here. :D

Well, there is an all white one from the old color series, the yellow you just said in 3231 - Post (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3231) an all red one in 3565 - Motorrad/Rennfahrer (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3565) and 3434 - Esso Gas Station (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3434) but don't know about the blue body/white tank... yes we have drifted off police bikes

Fantabulous! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/luwerner/gif/clapping.gif)
Now I have a good pictorial to see what I want and what I'm missing! My first bike was the first one of all, though here it was blue. It still at my folks house, but is in terrible shape :(. In fact, we're going for lunch there tomorrow and I'll take another look at it, to see if it's salvageable. If I could bring it back from the dead, I'll go after a modern klicky to ride it.

Thanks for the over view, Panos.  The bike from the take-along set looks very smart with the red and blue stripes, something I hadn't noticed before.

Thanks for your post, Tim.  The difference between the German and the international versions of the current police bike had escaped me and I'd assumed both were white.

:-[ digging up an old thread, sorry. But this is also my thingy and never found this before  :-[ :-[ :-[

Very cool to see some fellow motorcycle collectors. The 3915 is that the same as the 3986? Because it looks like it.

Maybe i can add some more info to this "history" line, with info from my own collection:

* The first policebike has more variations then mentioned. To my best knowledge they were only produced in the green and white colours. I haven't seen a blue one as depicted, made by Geobra itself. There are versions with white and green saddlebags. I even believe the 3572 was the ONLY green motorcycle of this series produced, it was also in another set (scroll to bottom  ;) ). The others are all white bodies with green tanks.

* The difference between 3564x and 3494 are the klicky's in other colours (green vs blue/white) and other stickersets.
(http://playmodb.org/setpics/3564x.jpg)  (http://playmodb.org/setpics/3494.jpg)

* 2010 Adventcalendar 4157 had a, i think, 3986 international version policebike in it. (This i do not own yet, so unconfirmed)

(* In 2011 the 5891 carry case was released with the same version 4564 motorcycle as in set 3623, but with a different rider. The motorcycle also has the darker stripe on the windscreen and a white-male police officer in modern black uniform)

* Set 4086 has a version of the 3986 policebike, but with a different klicky on it. At least according to the box. (Cannot confirm this RL)

* In 2011 the policequad 3655 was released, with a more South-American looking police officer in light-blue uniform. He also has a headset printed on his playmohead.

* 2012 the darkblue-policequad was released in the adventcalendar 4168.

* In 2012 the 5185 - international and 5180 - German versions were released. Also with the blue lights, but a different look.
(http://playmodb.org/setpics/5185.jpg) (http://playmodb.org/setpics/5180.jpg)

* Set 5990 (http://playmodb.org/setpics/5990.jpg) Also has a simplified version of the dirtbike as it was used in the carry case 4218. It has almost no accesories and NO stickers, that is what surprised me the most of this bike to be honest. Still it's nice. The pic doesn't show the trunks, but the bike has them just as the other one, and the policeofficer carries a pistol, the bike has a club and lantern on the front clips.

And to answer the blue & red klicky motorcycles question: 3208x (http://playmodb.org/setpics/3208x.jpg)

The offroad bike (I still need to get the plain saddlebags from the other version of this. I have an extra bike just need a few parts to fake it up)

The quads, the left one is from the beach theme and has the tropical look for the driver, the right one is from the recent advent calendar

I guess this must be the fifth type of bike they have done. The two on the left here are discontinued now, with the three on the right in current release

just the three available now

and the most recent by itself, reviewed in the Reviews forum 5043 Carabinieri (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=13447.0)

The liveries on the three current bikes are more impressive than those on the two discontinued ones.  I bought the first blue and white version but was disappointed with the livery and the very plain clothing of the rider,  I really do prefer the the next to the right hand end bike and livery of the fourth type, but may buy one of the new style if it looks as good in real life as in the photos.

:o Wow so many bikes thanks to everyone for contributing your own indivdual and shard knowledge on this topic. Loving the close up photos those very old bikes and figures still very detailed bikes but, got to love the simple charm of the figures and their uniforms, I'm really liking the look of that new Offroad Police bike the details of the headlight desing and general look of the bike and something about the shade of blue on that uniform really appeals to me but, I think one of my all time favourites still has to remain the Harley type perhaps I'm biased but, that's what I grew up seeing and at present it's my only Police motorbike almost complete apart from that I need one of the panniers and some of the correct white cuffs to complete it, aside from that I just love the design of the bike it looks so elegant and the Police officer looks very smart in his simple blue and white uniform  P).

love the pics Tim. You beat me to it  :-[
I had my sets lined up and photgraphed last week, and was planning to do the same  ;D
I love the carabinieri one, it's soooo nice. I had it unpacked just after X-mas. ALthough it had been in my closet for weeks  :-[

[edit]
hey, you missed a couple  :P
the 3rd Harley and the second SWAT bike.

and i'm still looking to get my hands on the Famobil policebikes, like the grey 3572 (http://www.todocoleccion.net/antigua-caja-famobil-policia-moto-ref-3572~x37651815). They are also awesome.

I know I missed the second SWAT bike, I need to get a few parts and convert a second first version I have. I thought I had the third Harley but then it wasn't in the bike bag with the others. I will have to hunt through my other police stuff and see if its there somewhere.

Nice thread!

Though as an adult I'm not much into the modern themes, I did have several of Playmobil's police sets during my childhood with the motorbikes being favorites.  :) I have restarted collecting motorbikes again (one of the few things from the modern themes I buy), but the farthest I go back is to the Harley-type (and I've converted the police Harley into a normal motorbike). I'm limiting myself to a few types though (retro-bikes, choppers and custombikes) so no Police ones in my inventory...

It's the first time I see that grey (black?) Famobil one, thanks for sharing the picture.

Thank you for all the updated info and pics, Tim!  :)

Good to see you're still around, Panos!

Famobil actually created a couple of sets in different colours then the original Geobra ones, some very nice indeed. And pretty hard to find.  :-\ ::)
