Title: Young Zebra
Post by: Little Jo on May 01, 2006, 19:33:17
I just made an update (http://www.jr-x.de/playmobil/customizing/zebra.html) on my homepage (http://www.jr-x.de/playmobil/) with my latest customizing work: a little zebra.

It is astonishing to me that PM has produced cubs respectively young animals/foals/etc. for bears, pandas, tigers, panthers, elephants, giraffes, and yes even for unicorns, but not for zebras. And this although there is a mould available which can be used with another base color and some additional imprints for a young zebra: the foal (analogous to the white tiger cub, which has been derived from the lion cub).

 ;D

I'm awaiting your "Go" and will send you photos (in the well-known format) with what I have so far -- 'cause I have a few animal customizing still in the pipeline ...  ;)

It's absolutely ADORABLE, Jochen!

I wouldn't be surprised if this custom inspires Playmobil to produce their own Zebra foals. ;)

The stripes you painted look so neat and the pattern matches perfectly with the adult versions. :o

Psst. Tim, can I interest you in a pic of Perkey (http://www.playkingdoms.com/pk/default.asp?http://www.playkingdoms.com/pk/museum/one/figperkey.asp) for the custom section at Animobil?
:)

That is awesome Little Jo! I cannot imagine Geobra making a young zebra that looks any better - yours is perfect.  :)9  Did you paint it by hand?

Thank you all for your praise.

Thanks  :-[ :D That was the plan: making customizings which are (for non-Playmobil-fans for sure  ;)) "not distinguishable" from Geobra items ... so it seems that (at least this work) was a success.

Did you paint it by hand?

The base color white is airbrushed, the black stripes and the brown stress are painted by hand with a fine brush.

If you hadn't of told me it was a custom job, I would be looking to find what set it came in, it's that good.

Well photographed as always.

Last Saturday I can't resist and bought the new 4081 Safari set (also cf. here (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=907.0)). So here is the direct comparison of my customized zebra and the new original PM one.

I was a little bit surprised how much stripes the new one has. And I'm wondering if zebras are losing strips when they are grown up (because I adapted the numbers of stripes directly from the adult one to the baby, and look on your own how less are these compared with PM's variant).

p.s.: Oh, nearly I forgot -- for those that are interested, the part no. is 30 63 4562 (but I assume as usual that you have to wait a few weeks until it can be ordered from DS).

Thanks for the number Jochen. I wonder if as the baby grows the stripes get farther apart?

Thanks for the comparison pic, Jochen.
I was curious to see how they would look side by side. :yup:

I was a little bit surprised how much stripes the new one has.
Maybe your zebra foal simply comes from a different species to the new one?  ;)

Some interesting facts about zebras and their stripes:

Can tell I've been googling again, right?

Here's a pic which suggests that might be the case.  Interestingly, on one website it said that the stripes on the young zebra were chocolate brown and turned balck with age.  However, it didn't say at what age this happened.
