Title: Custom chrome statues
Post by: tonguello on February 14, 2011, 17:06:47
Well guys, as I said in other thread here are my custom statues. I made it with the few spare parts I had so don't expect historical accuracy
The chrome is really good IMO. It is very shiny ( you can see me reflected taking the pic) and very close to the playmo chrome, though it is not as perfect as playmo chrome.
An excellent option for restoring or customizing chromed parts   ;D ;D ;D

As I also said before the paint is not a commercial paint, but a prepared custom paint bought at a hobbies store.
The secret is to give first a coat of shiny black for color depth and metallic effect.

Hey guys! thanks!

Asi I said before... there is no secret.... and if there is , it is not mine!
The paint is prepared and sold by an old little guy at a hobby's shop in BA. It is not a comercial brand, but a farmacy type little jar with a sticker that says "chrome" typed with a typewritter! Imagine how home made it is!!
It is very liquid, like water actually and doesn't smell like paint at all. It reminds me of a product my mom uses to removed the nail polish from her nails, Acetona (don't know the name in english). But it couldn't be that for that burns plastic... so I don't know. Looking at it, it looks like a liquid product with chrome particles floating. You have to move it all the time.
First coat on the object you want to chrome must be gloss black for this chrome paint is a little transparent and the black gives it more depth of color and metallic efect. In fact you can get different effect dependng on how much chrome you put after the black.4
It dries VERY fast!
And yes I use an airbrush at 4 pounds of preassure.
That's all there is to tell.  :)

Those look fantastic. That's an interesting technique. I have an airbrush I've never used. I should try it out next summer.

An airbrush! I was wondering how you didn't get any brush strokes with that type of paint. Excellent  :)9

Gaston, just one doubt: how does the paint hold up to handling or putting items in the klicky's hand?
Title: Re: Custom chrome statues
Post by: tonguello on February 20, 2011, 14:30:59
well... I guess it holds better if you give it a coat of transparent barnish or somehting like that. I haven't tried it. All I have painted is not for playing.... just display or light handling for photostories. For that it holds ok.

I ask because I once tried a chrome spray paint that looks terrific, but doesn't hold up very well.
