Thanks for the link, shirona, although 2012 (when these sets hit the UK) will be a cheap year for me (and some of the electronic sets I don't think will be a wow with PM fans).

Not too thrilled with the styling on the Pegasus, but the cave series - mammoths, sabre tooth cats lots of excellent stuff there I will have to have.
The new space theme looks ok, probably better in person than int he little pics.

The space/future-theme is really, really awful....but i love the stoneage-sets with all those nice new animals. Western and pirates are not my favourite themes but the new sets are looking very good, especially the hammerhead shark.

Wow! Thank you so much for posting the link  ;D So much there to be excited about! How long until you think the new sets will reach the US? I actually think the stone-age set will be fun. I wonder if the new princess castle will be better or worse than the current model?  :thanks:
Title: Re: News 2011
Post by: Hadoque on January 25, 2011, 21:32:26
HOORAAAHH... RUM FOR ALL!!  :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

I knew it! I knew it! The GOOD OLD "FRIGATE" 3940 (US 3286) is back!! :captain:
I had thought it might come back in new colours, and exactly this happens! (Like f.e. Cachalote I had dreamt about an English Navy trimaster, but being realistic I never expected that to realise)

Can't see the colours of the ship that good, but I think the hull is black and the deck probably brownyellowish or something with red stickers? The ridging is white again, like on the 80's/90's "galleon" (f.e. 3750) Ooff, back to the more realistic lined 3940 with it's dedicated gundeck and away with the 4290!
I notice a lot more cannons on the ship, not only below deck but also on the topdeck  itself...8-)
Crew has gotten smaller though, probably one had the walk the plank...

Some of the pirates look great, others a bit less... The Redcoats are fantastic! The small vessel is very nice (perhaps it's mast may be used to enlarge the big ship's masts?) and is clearly based on the small "gunship" of a year ago. (that one allways looked like it was meant for more, especially with it's semi-finished bow). The small fortress is nice too.
And allmost every set, except the cast-away one, includes at least 1 canon. So complementing the guns included in the "new 3940" (what's the set number?) with more canons becomes more achievable for the average (non-collector) buyer.

Fa(i)r(t)y)-tale theme on the other hand... a bit disappointing IMHO. No more big carriage (a small one instead) I notice. Only the dining-table set is quite nice and looks like a similar one from around 10 years ago...

Western again is nice, though take-along houses, it is better then nothing. The postal coach is back, that's COOL.  I've seen it before in those colours, when not mistaking in a limited exclusive German set some years ago ...

The future-electromagnetic-pulsedetonationengine-cyberwarfare-whatever-sets....are awfull!
Stone-Age, not particularly my field of interest, but I guess Scientology will buy all sets to "proof" their theories... ;D

Thanx for all the pics!!  :wow:

Thanks for the link! The prehistoric sets are fantastic, they're definitely a must-have for this year. The new pirates are great as well, and I have to get at least one pegasus. I'm not so thrilled about those e-rangers and darksters though, but there's already more cool stuff than my budget can handle.  ;)

Lots of things I like there  :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
I love the prehistoric sets and the schooner, not keen on the western buildings but I like the stagecoach.
Pity the pegasus isn't released until August,  :'( I could have used them to make thestrals for my Hogwarts display.

What are those absolutely hideous monstrosities in the first and last pics! :o :o :o

The Western buildings appear to be carry alongs (which I'm not really a fan of) and I am not very happy to see the return of that stagecoach (I have gone a lot out of my way to get one of the originals from that exclusive set!) :P

The modern sets like the farm and the cars and buildings are just amazing

Thank you very much for the link, Shirona! :thanks:

Yeah, I'm not really getting the first or last themes, either. I'm excited about almost everything else, though. I kind of like the new design of the princess castle. Just nice to see something different. It is VERY pink, though.  The farm has some pieces I want for zoo exhibits, and one of the baseplates in that mammoth theme is AWESOME!!   :omg: The new harbor stuff is really cool, and the cafe is definitely going in my zoo.  And the new pirates look very exciting. it's kind of funny, the colors for the pirate theme have improved, but they've gone to primary colors for the western stuff.  ??? I'm still happy to see western stuff, though! I hope it's a sign of things to come.

Post by: Ds dad on January 25, 2011, 22:40:33
There is a press conference scheduled for tomorrow, hopefully we'll get some more pictures.

@hadoque, the new 3940 style ship has 4 crew just like the original if I'm not mistaken (minus the monkey).  One thing I hope is that some of these redcoats are carrying muskets, the musketoon is one of the things I HATE about the pirate theme.  ALso is that a "native" I see in the rowboat set? It looks like whoever is in the front is carrying a spear.

Finally, not crazy about the pirate special. Another peg leg and he offers nothing new.

thanks shirona33.  :)

like hadoque, i am happy with the return of the 3940 mold.  :)
it's not totally as we expected - and predicted in http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=5891.0 - but it's better than nothing.  ;)
and some of the rigging is still made of real string ! (the sheets can´t be seen).
the printing on the sail is so very bad though.

the new big island i know i will hate (i'll buy it but i will hate it).  :'(
the pseudo-exotic carvings all around are so ugly and so out of place in the playmobil pirate tradition when tou see it as a whole.

the small island looks o.k. (although lacking the previous "robinson crusoe" ambience).

the new red-coat sets are the best part of all this.  ;D
the small schooner, heavy-sailed in this new version looks delightful.
and the new small fort is not an embarassment.

a final note just to comment on the new direction pirate-fashion is going.
i know i complained so many times about the black-and-red trend that seemed to take over all the pirate figures but this new "fluorescency" doesn't somehow meke sense.  :hmm:

Title: Re: News 2011

pirateship

The good old 3940 (US 3286) in new colours.
I wonder about what the colours look like in reality, they aren't that clearly visible in the pics.
The hull seems black, the deck might be red & yellow?!
I hope the colours look fine when we'll see the ship for real. But the ornament at the bow (was in goldcolour on the 3940 / US 3286) looks red, and so does the ship's wheel and the achor-wheel...

Also note there seem to be a lot more canons. The fourth crewmember has become a kid.

Personal note:
the canons from the canondeck look like the old canons (with canonballs), not like the arrow-shooting new canons which are visible on the upper deck ?!
And from trying out, I know the new canons don't fit that well inside the 3940's gundeck (the barrel of the canon is a little higher) and also can't shoot because with the new firing mechanism you've to push on top of the barrel (instead of pulling at the barrel's end) and that is not possible inside a 3940 because of the limited hight...

Would they have included some "oldstyle" canons with this new 3940-version, or are the pics...photoshopped "to show" these canons??

(except a pic of the rowboat-set)

note:
1)the redcoats don't have "real" white cross-belts; these are now printed on the klickies...
2) the small ship is based on the small "gunship" from about a year ago; same hull, with new upper-deck.

The Hammerhead shark is a must. other then that I am in much the same boat as bonnie and Zookeeper. The farmsets offer some nice building and the Prehistoric sets offer new animals and great exhibit decoration :-)

I can't stop looking at the pirate-ship pics, trying to find out more details.
I think the overall colour of the ship's deck must be a kind of yellow, hopefully not too bright...  Then a red bow-ornament, red steering wheel, etc... I really hope it will look ok and not kiddish...  :uhoh:

Also I keep being puzzled about the canons below deck. I've checked one of my 3940's equipped with the new canons (arrow-shooting ones), and they just fit below deck where the gunports are, but can't be fired, the hight below deck isn't enough.  ???

Perhaps there are some inner design changes with this new "3940"? Or oldstyle bullit-canons?
The canon-mouths surely won't be stickers or be printed on the hull I hope !?  :0

Why did they have to make those western buildings take-along??  I mean does slapping a handle on it make it any easier to "take-along"  Just make a friggin' normal building.  Maybe PM is testing the waters to see how the theme will be received with more to come later. IDK ???  I would hope with the resurge of the western genre of late in popular culture (True Grit re-make, Red Dead Redemption video game named Game of the Year by multiple sources)  we could expect a rebirth of the western theme.

Wow, that Stone Age theme is great... and it's obvious that women were powerful way back them... the one cave woman has 9 husbands - and a shaman to help keep them in line!

And they sure were big meat eaters back then - what with all of the hunters... either that, or the gatherers are hiding out somewhere else (and that would be the missing women?).

There are so many great sets this time... it looks like my 2 years of buying not much playmobil will be over next year (it will be such a long wait).

Thanks for the link - and posting the pics!

I am glad to see the brown table and chairs around.

Somebody mentioned the use of prints on the red coats and it seems to be the same trend in the western Klickies. There are a lot of jackets and accessories the cowboys could have had. The Office has a gun rack of some kind and the bank needs a vault of some kind. There is a black thing in the window ? ? I can not see what it is ?

That coach looks like a Santa clause chariot in those colors .   :eh?:

Thanks for posting the pictures hadoque!

I like these new pirate sets!  While I can’t say I like them better than some of their predecessors, they do look very good overall.  The old large ship with new colors is welcome, so that each warring nation (France and Britain in my case) can have its own large flagship.  I like the original ship’s colors a bit better, but this new ship’s color and design is a huge improvement over the last Fischer Price-style pirate ship.  The new fortification looks good and will fit nicely with the lighthouse.  I’m also very thankful for the new British flag and the new deck on the small ship.  Both will be immensely useful.  The new British soldiers look very good too.  I have a feeling my British fleet and army will be growing when these sets are released. :arrr: :captain:

I’m glad to see the Western sets making somewhat of a comeback, but I too wish they weren’t take-along sets.  They are a bit bright, too, but they’re better than nothing.  The klickies look very good. :cowboy:

The cavemen sets look interesting and have some very useful new parts.

I’m not thrilled about the new future theme sets, however, as they look quite similar to the Secret Agent theme, of which I’m not a fan.

I wonder if the new space theme is based on 70's manga and anime? The buildings look just that little bit too retro and the mecha is definitely a recurring anime feature. There are some possibilities for the "e-rangers" (though I won't buy them :hmm: ), but those "darksters" look ugly  :-[.

I hope there will be addons for the prehistoric theme later on, maybe a stoneage family or a cavewoman special (I wonder if the two different tribes reperesent Cro Magnon and Neanderthal people?). I love the stone and bone tools and weapons, and you can never have enough smilodons or mammoths (although I wasn't aware of that until now.  ::))

I aked why the pic's can't be seen by guests since a few minutes. Let's see what the answer will be.

So. Now the pic's can be seen again by guests. Somebody load the pic's down. That's why they were gone. If there will be another download, they will be away again.

So please don't download them, only watching!  ;)

Every where I read the response to the new space theme doesn't sound to be much enthusiastic. Still, I think it will be a hit with kids, because of the ability to make "IR battles". I for one will be all over whatever mechs come out.

Wow!  Pirates look great. I love the caveman sets!  I'm glad to see some new western stuff. I'm not to thrilled about the take along aspect but its welcomed. Another sheriff office?  Come on!  There are way to many sheriffs and offices.  Need different buildings please. Better start saving now because I want just about every new set except for the space theme. I really like the new fairy tale castle also. I don't want to wish away my life but 2012 looks like a great year!

It's growing on me, the more I look at it. I mean we've all been begging for a space theme. Did we expect it to look like something from the seventies? Of course it would be modern space. I think it might actually be pretty cool.

What's a MECH?

A mech or mecha is usually a big manned robot-like vehicle on legs, like the walker tanks in star wars movies etc.

Dear folks,
Just to warn you, there's annoyance on the German forum because of the 'theft' of the novelty pictures presented on their web and for their unauthorized posting on Playclicks. The removal of these pictures from that thread was an intervention of the Klickywelt moderators, who underline that those images are property of the person who posted them in their forum. To post them in our forum we must ask the owner for permission

------------

This is because *I* posted on Playclicks the link shirona shared with us...that is NOT 'stealing' pictures, I only copy and pasted a link. I eventually did the same as Hadoque but using a photo-hosting website, but the German folks did not refer to those pictures but to the link to the German forum.

Sorry but if this is true I personally think it's a bit selfish not wanting to share Playmobil updates with the non-German community of PM fans...we all have one thing in common which is love for this toy, what's the big deal about wanting to see what's new? Besides, how many times have pictures or links of any kind have been shared from one forum to the other and no body has said anything? We're not profiting with these pictures to get such a reaction...but of course, nobody complains about the link/pics shared here b/c the access is limited to us members (pics and threads can be seen and read on Playclicks by any person).

I do not see a single robot in the future  :eh?: lots of laser guns though . The green big building looks like some kind of future green house (the plant kind) Solar run fan on top of a glassed in tube.

Some really nice sets there

Though with the western theme I wouldve liked them to have given the klickies some proper neck-wear: those printed-on collars are a bit iffy. I hate it when my klickies have nothing around their necks. Still, its only nit-picking and I like most sets. Maybe the ship couldve done with 100% plain sails, but its fine as it is, too.

Some bits and pieces I really like. Like the new spears from the cavemen theme, which can be used to great effect elsewhere.

In reference to the 'other' forum getting upset about sharing pics~ I don't see why they would get upset, sharing is a good thing!

It's not like the poster claimed the pics to be his/her own, they did say where the photos came from....if it was a custom/piece of artwork and they claimed it to be their own, then the "upset" would be warranted, IMO.

If people think the dinosaur theme died a quick death (extinction) - I think they will be surprised how fast Playmobil pulls the plug on the cavemen.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's kind of neat and as a child I loved all pre-historic animals (still wonder why I never went into paleontology, some times) and I would have loved the animals - still would.  However, it won't last any longer than the wedding theme.

Setting a link is no problem.  ;)

Copy the pic and show it at another place without asking the photograph, I think this is not all right. It should be no problem to write a pm, asking if it is allright, to show the pic's in another forum. How you can see, Hadoque asked her, and she gives her okay.

It's not a question of justic, the point is, some person's won't show news pic's any longer, when they would be "stolen". So if we want to see in future, early such pic's, we should accept their point of view and ask first! :D

That's not my point, only the thing I was told, how they see it!

That was the reason, why another member, who had very early pic's from news, stopped showing us. :'( He is always better informed than we.  :-\

Well, the first thing I'm noticing is there are not enough red-coated captains!

The second thing is it seems pretty clear that the cannons that are below deck on the new 3940 are non-firing (you will see the picture shows the deck cannon as being able to fire only).  You will also note the barrel size and diameter.  They are of a larger calibre than the others and they are all at a very uniform length that is very very short.  Since there were sinking issues before with it I would think they would be addressed by adding false cannon fronts in so as to block off the water and it would cover all the complaints they got from parents on having to buy extra cannons as they did not come with enough to begin with.

they're not stickers or printed on, but they are very short in length with a black background so as to just give the appearance of depth.

I could be wrong about this, but from what I can see in the pictures, I am pretty sure that is what it is.

You will probably be able to take them out if you want to replace them with cannons like on the old ones, though.  I just can't see Playmobil changing the moulds - it would cost them too much (in their minds) and instead just come up with something to attach on -which is, of course, an entirely new mould and probably the same amount of money (or more) and just retooling the old one.

I'm more and more convinced the ship's cannons below deck are fakes.

Geobra surely wouldn't include at least 6 cannons in the set, certainly not when they've decimated the number of crewmembers and accessories that come with the ship, and accessories in the other pirate-sets seem limited as well. Even weapons are barely sufficient, if the pics of the fronts of the boxes show the exact content.
And a source on Klickywelt says the ship would cost only 65 euro in Germany, whereas the previous 3940 & 4290 costed about 85 euro or more (close to 100 euro in Belgium)...

A kind of short "cannon-barrel-front" with a "sealed-off background", instead of real cannons, crossed my mind too. "Arizzo" on Klickywelt thinks the same.

Btw, such a method first crossed my mind when thinking about how to add a row of cannons on the sides of the previous ship, the 4290. But I found it too farfetched to start such a kind of customisation... Now a very similar method may actually be used on this "new 3940" (I think the new ship's set-number is 5135).

they're not stickers or printed on
You will probably be able to take them out if you want to replace them with cannons like on the old ones, though.

I really hope so!

:thanks: thank you very Hadoque for posting the new pictures now I can also jump for joy at the new sets.
mmm what do I like best oooooooo so many goodies!.

The cave man stuff looks great and I'd love some to go with my jungle and DINOSAUR sets -  I know they didn't exist together but I watched Doug McClure as a kid and if it's good enough for Jules Verne it's ok by me   I think this set will end up like the Eskimos, it will have a short life now but in a few years will become very collectable again.

New palace parts  :woohoo: :woohoo: looks very Arabian to me, I can see a bit of Sinbad going on here. Only thing is do you think it's system x? From the pics I'm worried it could be the new clip system like the pirate lighthouse, so not brillant for expansions  :-\

And last but not least Pirate islands, oh I must have the new super size one to go with my other large islands.... not that I've got the room for the original one but hay it's so cool.

I haven't asked (yet) for permission to post pics here, but there are additional images on Klickywelt of the "Advent Kalenders" for 2011.

There'll be 3 of them:

1. Faulty Towers - theme
2. Pirates
(just re-use of old parts; a pirate that looks like assembled from pirate-parts from 10 years ago, the Ghost-captain from the Ghostship, a cannon, a palmtree, and a few other small thingies ...)
3. Advertised as "surprise", so we know nothing yet. Maybe...Western or Stone Age?

Seems kinda silly to me too Coyote.  Aren't we all fans?  I mean we ain't  talkin' state secrets here.  They're only new 3 inch plastic toys.  Oh well, I am grateful that somebody has them, just wish sharing them wasn't such a drama.   ::)

Ah, more drama from playmo-fans...   ::) :(

isn't that childish? I know what limits of respect are, but I find that attitude absolutely ridiculous - I've seen pictures of mine posted on other forums (even without proper credit given) and have never made a deal out of it (except for the ocassion we talked about an ebay seller 'profiting' on some pictures sold in a CD, one of mine being there - and didn't even report him). And those were real pictures of stuff/dioramas set up by myself, not pics of a catalog we all are going to get to have on our hands some day. ::)

I don't intend to offend anyone with my comments above, but seriously...it's just photos of a catalog/paper, we're not making copies of Mona Lisa...

In reference to the 'other' forum getting upset about sharing pics~ I don't see why they would get upset, sharing is a good thing!

THANK YOU. Thank God there's still sharing and mature people in the world ;)...anyway I'm not going to make this deal any bigger by continuing to talk about the subject, whoever is upset that is their problem, not mine. Besides, making this bigger would turn off the joy of seeing new sets coming this year (most of which I don't even like and won't have access to until 2012 lol).

Without derailing the thread further, the issue may have been of bandwidth, if people were embedding the links on other forums without rehosting them.

That's caused issues on a few other forums I'm a member/moderator of.

Blue-footed booby (in the front part of the big pirate island set) now that's a nice rare animal for the zoo collectors. What do you think - are there 2 colors of adult mammoth or is it just the lighting/picture?

Isn't that an albatross? I don't see any blue feet, and usually Geobra tend to produce more well-known animals (well-known in Germany, that is).

I'm also annoyed by the constant bickering on the German forum, this nonsense about sharing their pictures is just one of many examples. If you can read German, take a look at the responses in that "neuheiten 2011"-thread, half the people is only moaning about all the stuff they don't like and whining about how Playmobil used to be so much better in the good old 1920's or something. It also shuts down every half year or so. Enough reasons for me no to post there, even though my German is quite decent.

look what zhey have done! i shall remove zi pictures Magda! itz not vair!

and so on.

i like complaining as much as the next man, but these sets are really lovely for the most part. these and the medieval theme from last year were really jobs well done. at least as far as the klickies are concerned (the playsets etc are still a bit poor though - and the british 'fortress' is a joke, but you cant have everything).

Though I am German I must confess I am tired of this constant complaining, too. However, isn't it rather a general habbit of the human species to complain about what they don't have? Not only the krauts/ moffen do that. The novelties are well done with lots of attention to detail, some of them do not reflect my personal taste or expectations but that is the point - if I dream about a huge new faiy tale castle with staterooms and horse stable I can only be disappointed.

True. There's a lot of the new stuff that I don't like, but in my opinion that's a good thing as it means I have to spread my budget less over different themes. And I'm extremely happy with the cavemen, I will buy all of the sets and maybe collect a small herd of mammoths and a pride of sabretooths. I already have an idea of using stuff from the arctic dinosaur sets to create an ice age diorama.  8-) (Apparently the lack of "big trees" was also a problem for some of the critics of that theme... I don't think you need a lot of them on the tundra.  :))

:lens: concentrating on small details (and on pirates) i think i see 3 new "novelties" on the 5137 piraten ruderboot mitt hammerhai:
- it's the first time a cannon is installed in a small boat  :love:;
- it's the first time a HAMMERHEAD SHARK appears - at least i can't find one at playmodb or animobil (as zookeeper noticed previously)  :).
- it's the first time an african "native" is mixed in the pirate theme (as ds dad noticed previously).  :)
.
although this is a small set i think it's the one i prefer from all the new pirate releases.
the new sailing small redcoat shooner also looks great but i am kind of disappointed with the lack of "real" grey-shirts-white-trousers-black-hats sailors  :'(.

Though African ppl make the best pirates: just look at the Somalis  ::)

I agree with Heronimus re the belts. Ive already said it about the new cowboys. There's way too much printing going on. Id rather they gave us less cannons and more klicky-wear accessories.

Thanks. You know, with all the advanced technology, they should make the klicky "items' more tangible by using real touchable parts. I really have no love to these printing garments. I would say the worst print-on pioneer is the red Victorian lady from easter eggs. The printing just ruined a nice figure. Overall, however, I would still give a "like' to 2011 playmobil!!!!!! The pirate ship is in NICE WOODISH YELLOW.

Yes, I think so too!  :)
(though not to exclude my usual pessimistic remark: it could also be GOLDish, like the cabin's windows at the stern are on the 3940  :uhoh:)

And the hull looks like a very appropriate brown colour.
So, probably a woodish yellow/lightbrown deck with a darkbrown hull... finally decent, realistic colours (a bit like British ships of the line around 1800 !!). Not taking in regard the red steering-wheel, but that's a detail. Edit: wheel might be brownish afterall

Still wondering about the cannons below deck though... On not one picture the 1990-like gunmouths are sticking outside their gunports...
If fakes, I hope they're exchangeable with the real cannons.

The upperdeck of the ship looks exactly like the 3940 - even the double access doors to below-deck seem the same.
Only difference I can see momentarily, is that the stairs to the aft-deck are now part of the deckmould and not longer a seperate part.

Now that I've had a chance to sleep on the new sets, I'm still very happy with the new pirates.  My only complaint is I would have liked to see a Redcoat set which included 3 redcoats and maybe an officer.  Hopefully that will be fixed via DS.  I would have preferred plastic crossbelts but with the price of oil (and therefore plastic) these days I can't say I'm surprised by PM new tact.

I have a  questions.  For us newbies, since the pirates come out in Sept 2011 does that mean Sept 2012 in North America or just sometime in 2012 (hopefully Jan)?

No, I'm afraid it means Sept, 2012. However, if you're willing to pay WAY too much, they'll hit ebay as soon as they're out in Germany.

I'm hoping we'll get some good DS items out of this, too, like maybe a cave family so we have more women and children. And a blue-footed booby add-on.

I really like a lot of the parts of the new castle, even the design of the structure, but why must it be overflowing in pink?! I see they are reusing the Victorian fence gate in the castle in gold--very pretty. And I like that it now has front doors (and more opening windows) but why must they be in pink! It would look much better with the brown doors form the church. I love the new tower room. That will be very fun for fairy tails. There is a new, smaller, elegant throne (perhaps being good for a queen along side the king's throne). And I even see that the chaise lounge has finally made a return (seems to come with the castle), but it is now a hideous pink instead of the blue.

I love the new castle from the front - very Disney/Barbie-movie-like - those pegasuses are very similar to the Barbie horses as well (I see new hoop skirts too, I love them!)

You know, the more I look at the barn, the more I fall in love with it. It's very modern. It's got a milking machine, and grates in the floor for easy cleaning (no more build-up of ice cream/ poo :P ), and just a very good layout, with short doors for the pigs and all. It's SO much better than the current barn. The colors are a lot better too; the other one was so brightly colored.

After looking at the more detailed pictures in the pdf -
I've decided I'm going to like the new space theme - having working solar power in the main station is very cool (and will probably be expensive)
Did you notice the woman in green on the space sets must be a gardener - her top says Lechuza
In the pirate advent calendar - it's the glow in the dark baby monkey which is great.
Also in teh big pirate island - proper bamboo - the pandas will be very happy

In the prehistoric sets - just love everything about them. Did you notice in the shelter set - the mammoth skeleton is complete and can be put together separately. That's going to be used a lot for undead and Halloween, as well as in a museum setting.

Well if the cars are RC with some kind of laser game and the green house has a working solar panel I would imagine these are not going to be low priced sets.

I guess the western theme is so bare bones is due to the very low price that they are going to be offered at. I would have liked accessories like jackets and such. The old oil cloth style trench coats would be great.

The only disappointment in the great stone age sets is the one piece mold for the woolly mammoths body. They look great and have a nice scale to them its just we will not be able to pose them differently or have them stepping on people

thanks for sharing these pics/links/comments everyone!!

How could they print the crossbelt on the redcoats instead of using plastic parts?? ...

we all know this is the direction GB is heading for the sake of keeping costs down  :(
...I recently lamented that these printing are usually only in front so maybe we'll see a bareback redcoat  or a printed back with half completed 'X' belts?   ;D hope they bother to print the splits/(turncoats?) or we will be looking at playmo-sized Lego ;)

what I'll have to do is buy those redcoats without the printed 'X' belts and cannabalise these from the old redcoats...is so unfair...now I daren't wish for new greencoats  :'(

Hey Ras, yes the one piece mammoth body is a little dissappointing.  I guess their legs are too chunky and/or too expensive to articulate.

Really nice that they share the catalogue as pdf-file so we can take a closer look on what will come.

I'm really excited about the new animals. The hammerhead-shark and the blue-footed booby are awesome and i also like the new pigs and birds at the farm theme.

Hopefully the snake at the pirate-island is really yellow and not light green, that would be cool too. (Oh yeah, again more parrots and no bats...*sniff* )

Furthermore there are lots of single pieces in different themes that would be nice to have like the sundial from the pink castle, the bamboo (you were right bonniebeth ;) ), milking machine, silo, the redlight in the barn, etc.

The stoneage theme is so nice that i'm really thinking about how a small natural historical museum (stoneage and dinosaurs) would fit at my zoo  8}

And even if its not my theme...i love the MECH...oh how i would like to be a kid again and have a dozen of them to start a MECH-war in the garden...

:yup: Definitely a great idea! I was already going to have a dino museum like the one at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans; these will make it better! Or I may have a wooly mammoth statue or skeleton (did you notice there's a skeleton that detaches from one of the sets?) near my elephant exhibit for comparison.

the Future Base 5149 has been nominated for the ToyAward 2011 of the Nuremberg Toy Fair.

I tried to translate the text because it reveals a bit of how the theme is meant to be:

How will the future mankind live? Which impact has regenerative energy (e.g. from sunlight) today and which might it have tomorrow?  Playing with the E-Ranger Future Base run by Jack Genius and his team on an unknown planet children learn to set up an eco system - and how to handle regenerative energy and environment.

(the set has a sun light collector that provides the energy for a fan.)

Thanks for the link and translation. I am really glad Playmobil is giving kids toys that teach such subjects for the future. A toy with a working solar panel how creative is that. I just do not know why it always has to have bad/good element to everything. Its hard to get to a future if we all "war" all the time.

No wonder the mammoths went extinct if they couldn't move their legs!

I sure hope this is not some kind of cost cutting trend. First we had the building go to a more one-piece design (light house, rocks, the new Redcoat strong hold) and now an animal that is made in as few molds as possible. I wounder how heavy it is. The elephants are an animal that just feel so sturdy and substantial due to its size and weight. When you play with it you really feel like it is the most powerful in the land animal  category. If it weighed as much as a Zebra it would just not give the same impression .

The Mammoth corps sure will be a neat piece for dioramas of all kinds. I can see digging one of these out of the snow, bringing it back to the Lab (secret agents set) doing some DNA work and bringing one to life. Then having to protect the secret processes  from others. A whole spy ring.

Oh yes the whale is unrealistically light. The shark feels or at least gives you the impression that it is heavier and therefore more powerful

That whale does not feel like the best representation for the high quality toy that I have come to expect from Playmobil. One that I can pass down to my Great Grand kids . I bet if you accidentally stepped on it it would easily crush  :'(

The new saber toothed cat and the cave bear both have legs that move. I think the mammoth being solid is because of the thickness of the legs making the body have to be unrealistically thin in order to allow movement.

Just out of curiosity how did the set already get a nomination for best toy when the darn thing was just released in the news. It has not even hit the market or been played with by any real world kids (like ourself's)

Hi Ras,

The nomination is for best new 'green' toy at the 2011 Nuernberg Toy Fair, which starts next week. The nominations and awards (in several different categories) were chosen by the directors of  various toy manufacturers and, more importantly, toy retailers, as well as at least one researcher who works on 'what to kids buy and why'.

The awards in the different categories for 'best toy' are for those toys which get their 'premieres' at the Toy Fair. So like movies, there will be plenty of 'industry insiders' who will have seen the toys before they officially hit the markets. And it's those 'industry insiders' who pick the nominations and winners, not kids or their parents (or collectors like us).

I was trying hard to keep my cynicism in check writing this, and I don't think I've succeeded. Calling a spade a spade, so far as I can tell, these awards are really about 'which toys do the senior managers of major European toy retailers think have the best chance to sell the most (and therefore make the most money for them as retailers).' What you or I (as collectors) or children (as the people at whom the products are nominally targeted (it's really more their parents)) might think about them as toys (e.g., are they fun and interesting to play with) are secondary considerations at best.

Sorry. Got up on the grumpy side of the bed this morning...

Cheers,

AndrewL

:yup: I definitely agree. They'd be crazy not to make their pirates more POC-looking. Confusingly, though, the blue-footed booby is from the Galapagos islands in the Pacific, not from the Carribean. Maybe an attempt at not looking too much like they're copying POC?

I think they're still timeless! They're pirates. Kids have been fascinated by pirates for generations. But their perception of what pirates should look like is somewhat based on movies, since most of us have never seen real pirates. Our ideas of what they should look like were shaped my the movies we watched and the picture books we read, too, which are probably only loosely based on reality.

Wow,
Lovely new sets. I've been out of the loop for a couple of months but I like what they are producing!
The caveman sets are just timeless, I hope they really do well! (I'll probably get some)
The boat theme is also great but due to the fact that I'm a train boy ,I'll probably only get the café set for my city.

I love the new fairy castle, the design is just awesome! I only which they toned down the colors a bit so I could buy on as well . Imagine this building in grey with a black or red roof. I think most of us would buy it in an instant. Those pegasi are horrible (to much like Barbie and other crappy Mattel products, who are usually discontinued within a couple of months of release.)

I love the look of the space stuff but it is not my bag, so I won't buy.

The car theme is to chaffy/redneck for me.

Actually, movie pirates are based upon the pirates in Robert Louis Stevenson's book, Treasure Island, and how he portrayed them.

His book has been the greatest inspiration on public perception of pirates of all literature.

LEGO has done something similar with their mini-figs for a while. It's really a store sort of thing - where you go in and dig through a big box of the figure bags. If you get good at it you can identify what figure by the feel inside the bag.

Oho, an idea copied straight from Lego. I wonder how much they'll cost? I'm not keen to pay "full price" for an undetermined figure I may not want.

With the Lego figures, the staff at one shop got very good at feeling the bags to determine the figure inside, as witnessed by Tiermann, Ronastoo and me.

I've heard of these codes too but, of all the bags I've seen, have the same UPC code, so, I can't figure them out unless I feel the bag for the different accessories to determine what character it is. Last night, me & a couple of other parents were in the Lego section at Walmart, feeling bags to guess which ones they were.....LOL! I just hate to buy more of the same one.

This is exciting for Playmobil for sure and can't wait till they come out!

On a different note, some of the toy stores I've been to, still don't have the 2011 catelogues yet (in Canada).....does anyone know when they usually come out?

so do these come in bags or boxes? If they are in bags it will be so easy to feel which one they are but if they are in boxes shake test will be much harder

The new western sets look great and the new Klickies are a welcome sight. I wish more of them had jackets and accessories instead of all that printing but the retail price is supposed to be somewhere in the 20 euro range. You get a lot for that price. The stage coach is too Christmas-y  but I will still get some for the collection.

I do wish the hitching posts (if that is the correct term) were not molded into the floor at least that how it looks. It just looks like they will break and I also need more extras for my old buildings

I really want to see the accessories like the black bank vault

Maybe, and we could sure use some females other than ones dressed up in pink dresses. We need more women who do things other than look good. A female knight perhaps or some female construction workers   ;) Not all women dress in big dresses, cast spells or carry babies around . How about some more in the work force to represent modern times

Title: Re: News 2011

Oho, an idea copied straight from Lego. I wonder how much they'll cost? I'm not keen to pay "full price" for an undetermined figure I may not want.

With the Lego figures, the staff at one shop got very good at feeling the bags to determine the figure inside, as witnessed by Tiermann, Ronastoo and me.
Though lego is equally copying from other Japanese toys , kinder chocoeggs and other similar stuffs. It is particularly noticeable with playmobil's main competitor lego having released the fi?ures.

Lego copied from Playmobil too in the past, so I guess that's OK.

Only the crystal ball is ugly, but the actual knight is pretty cool (and I like the wings.) 8-)

Blue Knight
Grim Reaper
Boxer
Chef
Zorro
Old Gentleman (Uncle Sam?)
Masked Executioner?
Guitar Hero
Winged Knight
Football Player (USA or Cdn)
Blue man?

Pink Princess
Mermaid
Equestrian (Equestrienne)
xmas market woman?
Skater chick?
Rock Star
Witch
Blue Princess?
Cave Woman with Baby
Fairy
Mediaeval Lady?
Pirate? Lady Robin Hood?

How's that?

It looks printed over his normal mouth. If it is then you would be able to see the area where the brown mouth plastic should have been .

The printing annoys me as it does not stand up to the test of time. I have some played with Victorian ladies that look very untidy due to their blush rubbing off. Playmobil should have a powder room where we can touch up the makeup

I do not think this is a way to get rid of parts as I have been trying for years to get some of these parts and they have always been out-of-stock or discontinued.

It would defeat the purpose of a surprise if we knew what was in the box.  If it is not possible to figure out then I have a feeling we will have a hard time getting all 24 with out buying a lot of these (smart marketing)

Here's information to the twelve figures. I translated with google.  :o

Here is the press release to the collection figures!

New for Summer 2011: PLAYMOBIL FIGURES Boys and Girls
PLAYMOBIL collection bags for assembling, collecting and mixing

With PLAYMOBIL's all about the character. Since the world-famous game system came out in 1974 the market is the 7.5-cm Playmobil figure, the center and the starting point of all adventure stories in the more than twenty different themed worlds. The figures take the children with a variety of endless trips to the land of imagination, become friends and are temporarily constant companion.

From summer 2011 there is a collective series of Playmobil, which is the figure in a special way in the center. In opaque attractive goody bags each twelve figures for girls and boys at a MSRP of € 1.99 will be offered. From Princess to elegant Amazon, from the mummy to the Dragon Rider, the range extends the collective characters. Each series has a "star" in the girls' series, this is a princess with rhinestones and fabric, is on the guys a knight in shining armor bluish. Special Gag: The figures in the collection bags are not mounted, but are included as parts for assembly and mixing. This is particularly pleased PLAYMOBIL adult collectors, the need for their decorative themes landscapes often specific figures. Through technical changes in the shape and the production process, it is now very easy to put together the character of the individual parts. Special fun it is to mix the various accessories and parts of the collection figures together and combine. So always create new characters to collect and play.

And this is the german original:

Hier der Pressetext zu den Sammelfiguren! :hop

Neu ab Sommer 2011: PLAYMOBIL-FIGURES Boys and Girls

:hop

Neu ab Sommer 2011: PLAYMOBIL-FIGURES Boys and Girls

Hey guys, about that grim reaper smile...

Have a look at 3016 - Alligator Ravine (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=3016&pics=on)

and in that set have a look at the 30 66 7500 - Jungle Scarecrow (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30-66-7500)

  ;)

It may not be the same, but perhaps its what you are all trying to remember?

This smile is occasionally on one of the new top agents. He has a head with two faces. His hairpiece can be placed in two directions. Hence his name is twoface. He is infected by some evil spread by the opposing forces. I did not find a better picture of him on the web.

Those "surprise bags" look really cool!  One possible way to get all twelve figures would be to inquire at a retailer whether it is possible to purchase an entire box.  This assumes that a wholesale order will include equal numbers of each figure - I am assuming that Playmobil will include one of each figure in a box of twelve or multiples thereof, for example 4 of each figure in a box of 48.  A small local toy store might be more receptive to this sort of arrangement than, say, ToysRUs.  Also, did everybody notice that the package says "Series 1" in the top right corner?  So they must be planning to do more of these over time, maybe a new series each year?

Here's information to the twelve figures. I translated with google.  :o . . .

So always create new characters to collect and play. . .

Don't you think that this just means that the accessories are not already assembled on the figure?  More "special fun" for the "adult collector" and lower labor costs for Playmobil!   ;)

Adding a later thought:  I guess it would actually be necessary to order 2 boxes of 12 (one box of 5203 and one box of 5204) unless they combine all 24 into one box.

Are the accessories assembled in the special boxes? In the german text, it's definitiv, that the clicky is not "together".  ;) And the text is straight from Geobra!

I keep wishing that I spoke German!  In the normal Specials boxes the figures do need (usually) to be fitted out with their cuffs, swords, hats, etc. as opposed to the blister packs where the figures come completely assembled with all their accessories in place.

Actually, I think I am wrong and you are right!  I have just looked at another translation (Babelfish) and it definitely supports the idea of the figure itself being unassembled in the package:

Starting from summer 2011 there is a collecting series of PLAYMOBIL, which places the figure in special way into the center. In view-close attractive surprise bags in each case twelve figures for girls and boys are offered for a UVP of € 1.99. From the princess to the elegant Amazone, from the mummy to the kite rider the range of the collecting characters is enough. Each series has one „star “: in the girl series this is a princess with Strasssteinen and material, with the boys is it a knight in bluish-shining armament. Special Gag: The figures in the collecting bags are not installed, but are contained in individual parts for assembling and mixing. That will make in particular adult happy PLAYMOBIL collecting tanks, which need often special figures for their decorative topic landscapes. By technical changes at the form and the production process it is now very easy to build the figure up from the individual parts. It makes special fun to mix and combine the accessories and parts of the different collecting figures with one another. Thus always new characters develop, for collecting and for playing.

What an interesting development, if true!  It sounds like the internal Klicky structure may be entirely new and different.  Maybe someone fluent in German can confirm this for us?

These are really interesting developments. I too hope the klickies are firmly held together. One of my greatest frustrations with legos is that when you play with them they keep falling apart.

Thanks Andi for the safe picture. I knew there was one in the bank I just wanted to know if it was the old one or a new model. It is very welcome part to our western town. I will be needing many of these .

I too hope the bags come in sets of 12 with one each. I would like to be able to order all of them at once either from Playmobil (some how get around the 9 max) or at a  B&M

Now I want to see this talking Klicky  :hmm:

Each series has a "star" in the girls' series, this is a princess with rhinestones and fabric, is on the guys a knight in shining armor bluish.

I think this indicates that we might see less of these. I hope they keep them at a reasonable ratio...because otherwise the prizes might get silly.

BTW the bed in the westernset is great and was only in 1 set before. Hope they will accept my DS order for those...they are perfect for medieval set ups as well I think!

After looking at the catalog there seems to be a lot of electronics now. The car lights work the other one has a stereo, music that came with the circus, the camera with the agents, the laser game with the future planet, door bells, etc......

One thing that really drew me to Playmobil was the lack of all these buttons that other toy companies seemed to love. I like that the police cars only had lights and the kid had to imitate the sounds. Now you just push buttons and it does the sounds  for you on a lot of new sets . I do not like this aspect of the newer sets.

Title: Re: News 2011

Yeah, I'm kind of with you there. Police cars need lights of course, but too many toys make music, flash, vibrate, move, just do stuff these days. i think it's a little over stimulating for kids. I prefer toys that "don't do anything."

What worries me about the klickies in the surprise bags is that if they have found a new system of putting klickies together, will they start to use this with all new klickies, therefore reducing the possibility of combining parts from old and new klickies?  :uhoh:

Thanks for these latest pics, Andi.  I also noticed some toy fair pictures on klickywelt (posted by Quetzalcoatl)... including some pics of the surprise figures.  Now we have a better idea of what they are... unfortunately the boy figures aren't that interesting for the most part.  I like the grim reaper... the girl's selection has a better variety. I'd be trying to get the cave woman the most from the girl's packs.

It looks like these figures come in cases of possibly 48 - I don't think I'll be buying a case to get them all!

IS it a boy case of 48 and a girl case of 48 or a mix of both for 48 ? I would prefer a mixed case of 2 Klickies each for the $100

The pictures over at klickywelt showed one case for boys and another for girls... there was also a picture of a display stand with a mixture of packs in a bin.  I just saw a pic of the blue knight in pieces.  Presumably that is how they will be sold - as has been discussed here.

I've been really enjoying the pictures of the Stone Age theme (it's so great!) but I have a question... does anybody know what that burning tree in the big cave set (5100) is about?

I assume they are using fire to scare off the wild animals. It looks like the tree is mounted on a rock clip, similar to the falling tree that came with the beaver lodge set, so the can shake the tree to scare off saber tooth tigers.

I just saw these new klickies up close on klickywelt. An assortment of useless parts, don't you think? Mix and match? Unless you've always a ghost cook, or a boxing-gloved uncle Sam, or a top hatted executioner, there's little to get excited about, I'm afraid.

does anybody know what that burning tree in the big cave set (5100) is about?

Besides for scaring off the mammoth in the set, it probably also refers to the discovery of the use of fire by the human race.
It's generally assumed humans learned to use fire by examining something set aflame by nature.

Storm -> Lightningstrike -> burning tree -> general panic -> a clever one got interested -> observation -> examination -> use of fire

So they had fire when nature provided it, and once they weren't afraid anymore and learned about it's benefits (like heat), they tried to keep it burning for as long as possible.
Only later in (Stone Age-) history humans learned how to make fire themselves.

I still think the parts are too boring to be mixed and matched to any satisfactory effect ... and even moreso if this new 'system' is not compatible with the older klickies (but I doubt it).

Thanks for the replies about the burning tree, bonniebeth and hadoque... there is fire in most of the sets but this big tree with flames on it looks a bit odd.  And the tilting feature? Yes, probably to scare off sabre-tooth cats and mammoths!  I just thought that tilting fire tree was a bit odd.

From the novelties catalogue:
Die beliebtesten Steinzeittiere, wie die gigantischen Mammuts und gefährlichen Säbelzahntiger, halten die Höhlenmenschen und Knochenjäger bei ihrem lebenswichtigen Kampf ums Feuer in Atem.

The most popular stone age animals like the huge mammoths and the dangerous sabre tooth tigers keep the cave dwellers and the bone hunters occupied while they are struggling for vitally important fire.

I.e. this theme is meant about human ancestors and the importance of fire. As usual no opposing forces and actual conflicts.  ;)

Do they actually call the people on the rock "Cave Dwellers" and the people on the ground "bone hunters" ?

For those who aren't registered at Klickywelt and can't see all the pics there, I'm trying to get permission from several members overthere - who went to the Nurenberg Toyfair and took pictures - to repost some of their pictures here.

Since it's a lot of work (sending pm's to several people to get permission, adapting the pics' formats, etc) I'm gonna stick to the Pirates' ship. Maybe someone else can do the other themes.

I've one pic to post here to start with.

From all pics available, this picture shows the best the real colours of the new pirateship 5135.
The deck's colour is probably a very similar brown to the deck of the old 3550/3750-ships. The window's from the captain's quarters at the stern seem to be yellow, not goldisch as on the 3940 (US 3286).
The ornament at the bow is red instead of goldish as on the 3940, the achor-wheel and the ship's wheel are also red.
The hull is probably very darkgrey, or darkbrown.

2nd picture:

This one shows the bow of the 5135-ship.

It is clear that the opening in the front-deck, to access the front guns on the 3940/3286, has been covered on the 5135.
If the cover is removable, or if it is fixed and part of the deckmould, is not known.

A Playmobil-employee at the Toyfair has confirmed the guns below deck are "fakes".

The more recent guns, those that fire sticks, indeed can't be fired from below deck, cause you have to press on top of the gunbarrel to fire them and ther ain't enough room for that.
The older ones with canonballs can be fired from below deck, as you have to pull on the back-end of the barrel. (though off course not when your ship is fully equipped with sailors and accessories).

In the US, you had to flick the end of the cannon,
and hold it in your other hand so it didn't fly with the cannon ball.
Even more cumbersome.
I couldn't do it in an empty ship, much less a full ship! :o

I still do not see how you can tell which ones they are from those pictures ? Did anybody confirm what style they are

Wow!  I was actually hoping two things (which I already modded on my Black Pearl:

cover the forward deck hole....check!
make fake cannon ports so that you save on extra weight so the ship is more stable.....check!

Hopefully the faux cannon ports are also more sealed, so water doesnt get in there!

I may have to swap out the bottom hull of my black pearl for the new hull if this is the case!  I like real cannons, but it's not practical for real sailing, from my experience :)

Enlarged shot from the pics in the "Neuheiten 2011 PDF-Katalog"...

Seems something surrounds the "gun-mouths" and covers off the open space in the gunports, so no water should enter the hull when used in the tub or the pool... Maybe these "as-if cannons" can be (un)plugged into the gunports.

Very good observation actually. I dont see the point of all this , the previous war galleon with the 8 cannons was the best shp by far playmobil has ever made !!!!

Very good observation actually. I dont see the point of all this , the previous war galleon with the 8 cannons was the best shp by far playmobil has ever made !!!!

I've actually modded my 3286 to have these plugs around the cannon tips on purpose.... the 3286 is HIGHLY prone to sinking with just the slightest wave as the cannon ports are way too close to the waterline and can take on water easily.

With the plugs in place, the ship can take more than a slight broadside wave and still keep afloat.  Not to mention,. the reduction in ship weight (without having to have 8 full cannons) adds to better stability.

I'm impressed with these changes because they're EXACTLY what I was trying to do with the original 3286, which leads me to believe Playmobil didn't simply redesign this ship for aesthetics....I think they redesigned it for improved seaworthyness.  Which means they put a lot of practical thought into it.  Had I a voice on Playmobil's redesign team, I couldn't have done a better job myself...they covered all the bases, including the open hatch at the ships bow!  (I had to custom make my cover).  I will definitely be buying this new mould.

Also, the new colours to me are similar to Black Beard colours....I wonder if this is in conjunction with the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, featuring BlackBeard's Queen Anne's Revenge ship.  I know Playmobil already released a BlackBeard ship, but this seems to be a much better stand in if you ask me.

Dear BlacPearl ,

I am sure you know much more about playmobil pirate ships but i will have to disagree on a couple of points, Captain  :)

I really havent noticed than much instability between the 3286 ( cannon galleon ) and the old 3550 ship. I bought my first 3550 in the late 70s or 1980 cant be sure and i remember the amount of klickies and where they stood in teh ship made all the difference in keeping it a bit steady . I have 3 x 2286 and i have opened one and actually some years ago gave it a go in a swimming pool . It was a nightmare but again i found the klickies would make quite a difference . Without them i cant see any huge difference between these two ships , is there in terms of balance and sea worthiness ?? Perhaps you know something more here of course .

I ddint notice water going through the water cannon holes on the 3286 apart from afew drops, perhaps the swimming pool was too quite at the time !!!  I wonder though and thats an intersting point if these new fake cannon 'seals' the black squares with the hole in teh middle can be retrofitted to the 3286, giving also much wanted ( in my opinion ) stability to the cannons themselves expecially when shooting !!! What do  you think captain  ??? ??? ??? ???

 8-)

These fake cannons save up a lot of money, as there aren't enough guns supplied with the ship and you have to order them seperately - which I did with the previous ship. But I don't mind not having to buy more guns; and I have enough guns on other ships to put them in if I need it for taking pics etc. Obviously I do hope they can easily be disassembled from the ship and aren't a fixed mold, but I think I'll survive that too.
Title: Re: News 2011

guys just an innocent question...
why would we, adult collectors, want 12 real cannons when our big fat hands can hardly fit the lower deck to put them into place just like it is today???? not to mention having space to move our hands and actually make them shoot!!!
Beside that would mean the re-design of the whole ship to have real access there.... isn't this asking for too much?

IMO those fake cannons look great, and gives the ship the right look. I have enough problems with the 2 real ones that the 3940 has!

  tonquello, no senior

I am afraid i have to completely disagree

These fake guns I hope are not the sign of things to come . Of course this is a personal opinion but i think its very wrong to start having fake things on sets . very very very wrong and going down the route of making far more simple and cheap toys. Just look at the new mediaval castles how  fewer sets they have and less customisation possibitions and the god sent steck.

I hope these ships do bad in the market nad they bring back the older cannons this time on a much bigger ship !!!! on double decks also  i.e 8 cannons per side and 3 masts please !!!!!

Title: Re: News 2011
Post by: bonniebeth on February 09, 2011, 14:10:31
I agree with Gaston. I think the fake cannons are a great solution! It gives the ship a nice realistic look, like there's a whole row of cannons down there, without the extra money it takes to put real cannons when they are totally pointless because no one can possibly fire them!

As a side note, when we were kids, my brother and I were into legoland pirates, and on their big ships, they had several cannons, but not all of them fired! They saved money by having some of them be fakes, which I didn't really like. However, this IMO is different, because we're talking about cannons below deck (something lego didn't have at all) that you can't reach anyway.

the old 3050 style ships are very stable.

THe 3286 is not.  Believe me.  I have thoroughly tested this ship in bathtub, swimming pools, AND a real lake.  I think even Playmobil is aware of its inherent unstability, as even the original mold has to have an ugly counterweight ballast attached when u put it in the water, JUST so it won't topple over.  The old 3050 style ship doesn't need additional ballast counterweight besides the one already installed on board.

The only time the 3286 is "stable" is if you remove all the cannons (all 8) and all the clikies.  Then it can tread water alright.  BUt what is the point of sailing an un-armed, un-manned ship?

When fully armed and crewed, the 3286 simply does not stay upright very well, especially if a wave crashes against its side and enters the gunports.  Once you add the counterweight ballast, the overall weight of the ship itself is increased and brings the waterline even closer to the cannon ports.

Believe me, I have thoroughly tested this ship back and forth, experimenting with different ballast weights, different ballast depths, different cargo loads, different crew configurations, different placement of crew members (makes a difference whether u have a clicky on deck versus up high on the tops (crows nest)....and diffrent armaments configurations (number of cannons).

My end conclusion is this ship is NOT stable the way it is.  I'll get some video to show u my findings...

Next you'll be telling me the hull it bigger! (AKA Taller! ;D )

If the data is correct, rather smaller:

Dimensions of the 3940 (US 3286), from my catalogues:
L 70cm x W 24cm x H 56cm

Dimensions of the 5135, from the official website and the 2011-catalogue:
L 68cm x W 22.5cm x H 56 cm

How can it be 2cm smaller?  Makes no sense to me.  Unless it really is.  I wonder if that's a redesign as well.

Doesn't that mean the ship will sail better?

After all that means the depth of the hull (comparatively)
is deeper then the hull of the 3940, because the length and width are both smaller.
Will this give it more stability, or even float a little higher in the water? ???

IMO it would be less stable, because it is shorter in length AND width, but still the same height.  So inother words, it's "taller" proportionately, which means it will be more prone to tipping over than the old one.

@blackpearl

It looks to me like the deck of the 5135 has to be a new mold both to close the hole in the fore deck and to add firing positions for the on deck cannon.  If this is the case then I wouldn't be surprised if PM made it slightly smaller to conserve plastic (due to the high price of oil).  Just speculation on my part but like i said I would not be surprised.

Just checked one of my 3940's (masts, bowsprite, etc not installed) and it measures about 22 - 23 cm in width across the widest part of the deck (gun-hatches not deployed sideways).
So maybe the original measurements in the older catalogues weren't correct, and they've updated them...
Or maybe the sails are less wide on the 5135.

Now I'm gonna quit with "5135-investigations"... at least for a while.  ;D

Pre-release suppositions are fun!  I'm a transformers fan too...you should see how much speculation comes with a pre-released picture of a transformer...peeps go crazy trying to figure out how it transforms even before they have it in their hands.  It's good exercise for our imaginations, and it's exciting!  Look how much speculation we've generated for what is essentially a re-release of an old mould with only a few minor tweeks in design and colour?

We're EXCITED!!!  :D :D

on the old 3286 the spars are the same colour as the gundeck (tan).

Which means they might be on the same sprue on the factory.

Just a guess.

The 5135 spars are black.  If it follows the same pattern, that means the gundeck will also be black.  THe surrounds around the faux cannon tips appear to be black.

So it is possible the faux cannon surrounds are NOT unpluggable, because they may actually be integrally moulded as PART OF THE GUNDECK.

On the 3286 gundeck, there are pegs for the cannons to snap into place when they are sticking out of the port holes.  I can't imagine how those pegs would be sufficient enough (unchanged) to accommodate faux cannon plugs that are removeable.  I'm going to guess the faux cannon plugs are a new mold design incorporated into the gundeck in place of the pegs (why would it need pegs for cannons, when there are faux cannons to take a real cannon's place?)

That's my guess.

IF this is the case, what I would do is buy a spare 3286, and when ur playing on land just use the 3286 gundeck so you can use real cannons.  Then when you play in the water, switch it out with the 5135 gundeck so you dont have to worry about stability or taking on extra water. That's what I'm gonna do.  I'm also gonna repaint the ugly yellow window frames and the bowcrest.  I'm not a fan of the black spars either, though I could have used these on my Black Pearl Custom (I actually had to paint the tan spars black).

Anyway, yeah, I'm guessing the cannon plugs are not removeable.

To me, the 5135's hull, bowsprite, masts, spars and cargo-hatch seem darkbrown; same colour as the masts/spars/sprite of the 4290.
A darkbrown hull would also give some contrast with the black gunport-hatches.
The "faux gunmouths' surroundings" seem indeed black.

I've been reflecting about those pegs that held the canons in place on the 3940/3286, and possible "faux gun"-plugs or not...
Instead of using the pegs near the floor of the gundeck, they could add 2 such or similar pegs to the inside of the hull; one peg on each side of a gunport. That could hold "plug-in faux gunmouths" well I think.
If the "faux guns" are unpluggable and would be part of the gundeck's mould now, then they would have to use more plastic in comparison to adding a few plugs to the inside of the hull. They would need to raise the height of the sides from the inner gundeck to the same height of the upperlevel of the gunports, almost over the whole ship's length. If they just would raise the hight of the gundeck-mould near the gunport positions to include the "faux guns", these "faux guns" would be quite "wobbly" I think, and then that wouldn't guarantee the sealing of the ports to keep water out (one major advantage of "faux guns").

Just my thought... ;)

I'm hoping for "plug-ins"; that would leave all options open and make everyone happy.
If you like them, you leave them on the ship. If you don't, you replace them with the proper guns.

The third - in the photo with the white one - is hard plastic like an old style horse, not soft rubbery the way the newer ones are. To tell at a glance look at the dorsal (top) fin, it has more of a curl on the hard plastic version.

Ah you can't have the cake AND eat it. People want a safe world, and a safe world is what they're getting.

That's not going to make the world safe.  It's only going to make people more dangerous because they won't know what to do and will be less careful (and hence less safe).

It's like "safe" cars with anti-lock brakes, crumple zones, airbags, etc - it hasn't made people safer drivers, just the opposite - they rely on their "gizmos" and don't pay as much attention or focus their driving skills.

The same has been proven with bicycle helmets.
